I hear that. My dad took my brother an I to a Harlem Globe Trotters basketball game at Southwestern College in Point Loma in 1962. I was 8. Cab Calloway came out to mid court for halftime and accompanied himself on this beat up electric piano to "Minnie the Moocher." I knew that song from my mom's record collection and it was clear that most the crowd was familiar with the song as well. While all the other kids flooded the court after the game to get their favorite Globe Trotter's autographs. I spotted Cab over at the Globe Trotter's bench and went over to tell him how much I enjoyed his song. He flashed that world famous smile of his at me and enthusiastically shook my hand and asked me if I had heard his music before. I shook my head in the affirmative-too star-struck to say anything. I finally mustered the strength to say, "My mom has your record and I listen to it all the time." He put a hand on my shoulder and told me, "thank your mom for sharing my music with you." That was 60 years ago and I feel so blessed and privileged to have had that moment with a Cotton Club legend. Thank you, mom. I sure miss you.

The sessions leading to release of album: “Together Again, The Great Reunion” which was very first collaboration of Armstrong/Ellington - hence the ironic title, is ALL ELLINGTON tunes. Satch fame was such at the time (never really faded) that Louis’ piano man worried of losing chair, to be replaced by Duke TAKING SIDEMAN ROLE BEHIND POPS. His rendition of “Azalea” written by Duke for Louis some decades prior, is achingly beautiful, with lyrics and delivery unmatched. This combo is height of American Songbook. Not for no reason was the Satch recording only musical launched to space for faraway aliens getting hip to Earthly jams. Long live Louis and Duke memory!
