YES. Underrated to this day--she somehow can't be perceived separately from the Louis nimbus--but on her own she was as good as everyone in the top rank of singers, and she outlived almost all of them while retaining her voice into her 70s and 80s! Some of her performances in the 1980s are amazing--she sounds UNCHANGED from 1958❤❤❤

Keely was a wonderful performer -- talented, beautiful, and a great deadpan sense of humor. I love Louis, too. He was also funny, a great showman, and seemed to have boundless energy. What a team. Bless you both.

Louie Prima and Keely Smith performed many times in Las Vegas. My mother and father loved their shows. It was when people were human beings and love was in the air.❤

Am, Keely really had the pipes, much more than she let on with the Prima act. This woman really had a VOICE!

Keely Smith had the most fabulous voice, she could sing anything and make it her own. However, though she had great success with Louis Prima, I always thought it was a distraction from her giving full realisation to her talent. In addition, she was beautiful and had a sensuality that she kept in check. I know she was a religious lady, but whatever, I always adored her!

because they were selling shtick...not talent..less you think shtick is talent
@jacksobrooks
@jacksobrooks Жыл бұрын
@@jadezee6316 it takes talent to invent a schtick that doesn't suck. If a person just has pure talent, that doesn't exactly make for good entertainment. Someone can win a big singing contest on tv because they have an incredible voice and delivery, but if they don't have the taste and charisma to make entertainment then well....nice voice I guess? Maybe they can get a ghost writer or a really hands on manager? At that point they are just a tool(lots of musical acts are like this). Pure talent, as you would describe it is far from everything. I would rather see an interesting weirdo with a half decent voice than a boring person with the voice of an angel. I think most would agree.

Keely calls him a “jadrool” - playful Italian slang for a stupid person, a dummy. It shows up in other songs like Rosemary Clooney’s “Mambo Italiano” (“Hey, Jadrool! Ya dona hafta go ta school!”)

The other commenters are correct, in that it means a bit of a clown, or better, someone not completely serious. It is actually a southern Italian dialect term for the strict Italian (Italiano tricolore) word cetriolo, which means literally a cucumber. So she is (literally) calling him her little cucumber. I am no linguist, but I remember my Pop using this term with just about all of his close friends. It is something you might call a very good friend as a form of playful verbal banter. Hope this is useful.

He makes fun of her native american heritage, she makes fun of his italian heritage, they're friends till the end, and nobody tried to cancel them. Where did the world go wrong such that we ended up so hyper sensitive?

I must be missing something. If you are looking for a preview to indygirl style, where the performer mispronounces and slurs lyrics, then you've really got something here. If your looking for a good performance of this song, i'd suggest Frank Sinatra.

I thought it was horrible. Louis is just a clown. Keely was the one with talent. I meant a checker at Target with "Keely" on her name tag. I told her I knew who she was named for. She said I was the only person who has ever made the connection.
