I walked by Keely Smith's star on the walk of fame earlier tonight. Until about 2021 or so, I had never heard of Prima or Smith. I stumbled across this video and Smith's face struck me as quite attractive. Her voice was great.

I love Keely Smith and her expression is priceless. She and Louis Prima worked beautifully together ❤️. I watched an interview with Keely Smith and she said that Louis kept interrupting her train of thought hence the expressions. Keely had an amazing voice and was natural, miss her. Rest in Eternal Peace Keely Smith and Louis Prima.

Lou Sino ( trombone player) was terrific and even later in his career he had a band on Bourbon street, and they were so good! High energy!

Keelly Smith always looks in her performance with Louis Prima to be thinking: "I could be doing laundry now; in fact, I'd rather be doing laundry!"

Love the shots of Keely, waiting for her turn to shine, checking out the theater exits to see who's comin' and goin'...

Her bored look is only an act. She was just as talented and enjoyed performing as he did. Straight man/funny man comedy act.

she said in an interview that some shows they would have to stand for 30 minutes so she wasn't board she was looking at the exits and entrances seeing who was going in and out .
Cher said that part of her act with “Sonny and Cher” was taken from Keely.

Louis was the voice of King Louie in the jungle book cartoon. "I wanna be like you,"

Go take your best gal, real pal Go down to the levy, I said levy, And join that shuffling throng Hear that music and song! It's simply great, mate, waiting on the levy Waiting for the Robert E. Lee! Watch them shuffling along, See them shuffling along Go take your best gal, real pal Go down to the levy, I said levy, And join that shuffling throng Hear that music and song! I don't think I'm out of line saying that Sonny and Cher's TV writers modeled Cher's persona on wonderul Keely Smith.
@liamfan3 жыл бұрын
I just read they had the same manager (Sonny and Cher...Louis & Keely), Joe DeCarlo.
@akrenwinkle3 жыл бұрын
@@liamfan I wonder if Sonny and Cher caught Louis and Keely's act and realized they were seeing what they would become.
@liamfan3 жыл бұрын
@@akrenwinkle I wonder!! I just watched an interview with Keely yesterday and she said her bored act happened quite by accident when, during a performance where she literally had nothing to do for the first 30 minutes, she WAS bored, watching people come and go in the club where they were performing, and at one point, Louis tried to get her attention and startled her, and it got such a reaction from the crowd, they thought it was planned. From then on, it was part of the act.

@akrenwinkle Thanks! I always wondered where the inspiration came from.
@akrenwinkle Жыл бұрын
@@SDW90808 I could add this, and you- and others may or may not agree- it's a gender-reversed version of George Burns and Gracie Allen. Gracie would ramble and George would just puff on his cigar, a bystander. But it worked great in vaudeville, radio, television.

I love Louis Prima, Keely Smith and Sam Butera and the Witnesses with a passion. But the Heidelberg Quintet absolutely OWNS this song with their definitive 1912 rendition. Accept no substitutes. Not even this pretty darn good and well meaning one.

Naaa, Jolson did it best
@TeachinTV2 жыл бұрын
Lou Sino, the trombone player/singer/dancer was the second one to play that role in The Witnesses. He had more bravado, more blues and swagger to his playing than his predecessor. Sam Butera''s voice was as underrated as his saxophone brilliance. Amado Rodrigues' bass technique is faultless--how can you resist that joyful expression, the laughter on his face?

Keely Smith's expression is my sincere feeling listening to these lyrics. "Daddy and Mammy", "See them shufflin' along"? Not amused.

Wouldn't you shuffle along in the same situation? Besides, its a rousing song which can be enjoyed without the obligatory virtue signaling.
