ESPN NFL and College Football analyst Louis Riddick joins the Dan Patrick Show and responds to recent comments made by former quarterback Cam Newton where he labelled Brock Purdy and some other qbs in today's NFL "game managers" as well as explains why he isn't a fan of the negative connotation that comes with the designation

Newton is a poster child for grandiose narcissism, including the resentment for anyone who is better than he is. He had some success as a QB without ever being good at the actual QB stuff because he was a physical freak. (Dan characterizing him as a 'game mismanager' is a thing of beauty.) When he lost a step he was done, because he couldn't actually play the position. Purdy will play until he's 40, barring horrendous injury, while Newton can't get a look as a backup because of his personality disorder--which makes him a corrosive clown anywhere he isn't the sole object of adulation.

Stop….When Cam had a DECENT play caller, Norv Turner, for the first time in his career, he was 70% accurate. Dan is just wrong about Cam not having periods of managing game, as he did show decision making and accuracy, with Mike Shula as his offensive play caller and Kelvin Benjamin as his best WR. Cam’s best WR in his career with old Steve Smith. These discussions suck because people aren’t honest about evaluating if a QB had the same type of play caller and talent around him as another.

Purdy processes the field, goes through his reads and delivers the ball accurately on time better than any QB out there. Indeed his stats suggest better than almost any QB that’s ever played the game. He doesn’t have to run round like a lunatic, throwing it seventy yards off balance through the eye of a needle because he’s already delivered the ball to his open receiver.

Joe Montana won two Super Bowls BEFORE all the stars showed up. He was surrounded by journeymen those two Super Bowls, especially the first one. All people talked about was Dan Marino this & Dan Marino that the 2 weeks before his second Super Bowl. Forget that Montana was already a Super Bowl MVP by then, he's just a system guy. Then he gave Marino & the East Coast Media a QB clinic throwing for 331 yards & 3 TDs and rushed for 59 yards and scored another TD versus the #1 Defense in the AFC. He was a difference maker BEFORE the Jerry Rices, John Taylors, Brent Jones, etc

@BangBang9rGang

@@SouthSideBullyz I'm not trying to discredit what he did. Like he said, I'm just calling a spade a spade. Cam was a freak physical specimen at the QB position. The league had never seen anyone like Cam. So he took the league by storm when he got drafted. I agree he didn't have elite offensive guys around him. He did have an elite defense though. Which was a huge part of him winning games. How many of those TDs you speak of were with his legs? A lot of them. And once his body started to slow down a bit and the league found out he couldn't play from the pocket, his numbers TANKED. Why? Because he wasn't working on his craft. It's obvious. Dak Prescott will have a way longer career than Cam because he can actually play the position. So Cam is not in the league because he'd be a bigger star than the starter? That's my point. He's only 34, if he was really a good QB he'd be STARTING for a team. But he's not. You know why? Because he can't manage a game ironically. Cam got benched for Mac Jones. Nuff said.

Newton has no idea what it means to be a great QB. He was born a great athlete and never learned to prepare in the way the true greats did. Manning, Brady, Montana, Young, and some others were never done preparing. They did just come in at 9 a.m. and go home at 5 p.m. They studied film and studied some more. They grabbed receivers and ran extra routes until they felt perfect. They walked the field and visualized every play. They sat down with coaches and asked questions, explored each play, made adjustments, brainstormed improvements. And then they did some more. They were all superb game managers. Newton has no idea what that level of investment means. Brock Purdy seems to understand. In a decade or so, we will see how it turns out. We have seen Newton's decade of disappointment and underachievement. He remains incapable of even recognizing greatness that transcends physical talent. To him, Aikman won only because of Smith, Irvin, and a solid team. Montana won because of Craig, Rice, and a solid team. Manning won because of James, Harrison, and a solid team. He cannot see how an over-prepared QB performs perfectly and elevates everyone around him. Newton isn't smart enough to know what he doesn't know.

Being a game manager is WAY MORE VALUABLE than being an athlete at QB.. that’s why Peyton Manning, Tom Brady & Joe Montana All go down as the greatest QB’s ever to play this game. If being super athletic is what made great QB’s we would be sitting here saying Michael Vick & Cam Newton are the greatest ever. GAME MANAGING IS QUARTERBACKING. & the QB’s who manage the game best are the ones who find themselves being the most successful. The “game changer” athletes who can use their legs and throw 70 yards down field are only good for an MVP trophy, a big contract and a whole lot of disappointment not living up to expectations.

Funny how all of the amazing skill players around Purdy are on pace for their best season, or some other record....its like he is elevating them...huh.
