For those who are curious, go on KZbin and watch authentic reenactments of dances and music from the court of Louis XIV. You will see how the dancing and music in above scene is far, far from any kind of historical reality--and vastly inferior to the artistry and brilliance that lived in the baroque. Movies like this are not only non-educational, they are anti-educational, leaving us with less than we had before watching!

I agree with your "acceptable artistic license" position. We need that artistic freedom to develop the greatest creativity in all fields. But we viewers should also express our displeasure at those creative choices when we feel strongly about something. My own response was a pretty emotional when I heard this jarring music in a supposedly baroque-period drama. But thanks so much for your balanced response.

Where the fuck is Lully's music?
@DanielGarrett01237 жыл бұрын
The combination of baroque dance inappropriately paired with Peter Gregson's twee score, (plus a thick-waisted Kate WInslet) makes me want to scream and pull out what little hair I have left.
@kjaime70307 жыл бұрын
Oh, whatever. You've never heard of artistic license? Anyone with heart left in them can find this scene moving without having to nitpick. And there is NO SUCH THING as "inappropriately paired with" when it comes to dance. EVER. If done correctly you could do it with hip hop and create something beautiful.

This movie is one in a long line of movies that attempts to tell tales of the age of Le roi soleil. Most all of them collapse on themselves. I like Alan Rickman in this role. It is one of the better ones. However the movie itself is just badly written. In my opinion the best attempt is L'Allee Du Roi, it runs to 240 minutes, and tells the tale of the rise of Madame Scarron, from a widow to the second wife of Louis XIV. It is well played, sounds good, well acted is just a better story. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGqulKmCbadpe5I

On a more trivial note this made me think of the French Angelique films. Corny old tosh but lots of historical detail. I'd like them to do a mini series so all the characters were included. There was a new film made in France a couple of years ago but that version cut out key characters like the Gutter Poet.

The music would be perfectly suitable in a different context. In the context of baroque dance, it just seems cold and empty and I think whoever directed this movie wasted an opportunity for more interesting and more beautiful music than this.
@glyniswhite97064 жыл бұрын
This looks & sounds dreadful. The music sounded nothing like Baroque music should & the dancers were not in time with the music. The are some beautiful clips of Baroque music & dancing on KZbin. Sadly this is nor one of them.
