Broadcast live from Las Vegas, the original broadcast version of me (Louis CK) on Comic relief before it was edited for repeats. Most people missed this because their tivo cut off immediately before I came on. this is twice as long as the cut version that is showing on hbo now.

The reason why the audience seems so quiet is because I'm pretty sure the camera crew didn't use ambient microphones or if they did they were turned way too low because you can hear the audience cracking up if you listen closely and he pauses for too long for people not to be laughing. I think the only microphone that is picking them up is the one he's holding.

1) These types of shows are normally not produced well for TV, so the stage/ambient audience balance can give you the impression of a dead room. You know that bit of an Emmys show where they give an award to the guy who directed the Oscars or the Emmys? Those guys don't usually direct benefits. And 2) benefit audiences are not great. None of the stand up performers or musicians have time to get into a nice rhythm, it's like a showcase sampler.

You can't 1) tell how good or bad an audience is in these types of gala-style shows because 2) the audio isn't mixed the same way it is for a stand up's comedy special and 3) you can't expect a fervent response from an audience that's seeing something new every seven minutes.
