Hi, we're Laura and Louis! We built a bed that converts into a sofa for our Sprinter camper van conversion. Using heavy duty drawer slides, we designed a simple solution couch that pulls out into a platform bed at night. The multi-functional use is perfect for our small camper and it allows us to use one mattress piece versus smushing together multiple cushions.
Check out our blog for additional details: imeemade.com/b...

Thank you because I and my daughter are going to try to use your video and after the fact wisdom while making it. Beautiful. My brain is slowly dying and my body is falling apart... literally. I built my tiny house but remember nothing of it due to my CTE. Pictures tho help me to see what I built, but it looking at them I see what someone else built. On disability wished we could get a supplier to help supply build. If not able to find a company that would be willing to help it's ok. I seem to have paid for my entire tiny house build. Don't remember that either. Thank you both for your video.

I made a very similar couch,/ bed for my van that is removable by using threaded hooks and wing nuts to hold it in place into the recessed lugs for the bench seats I removed. The bed is 3 pieces of plywood like yours but it has legs o n the outer edge to carry the weight, so no expensive drawer slides needed

The love the bed set up And with alot of thinking The otherside could ether match the bed. Making it wider Or The way i see mine with your design The same fold over to a matching height box And a pull out stove/sink under the folding arms And some sort of neat pull out fold down Table in couch mode......... The hard work shows Thanks !

I only clicked on because of your doggo 🥰, but ended up enjoying your bed build. You asked for suggestions, drawers make better use of low space than doors. Its easier to access whats in the back when you can pull it all out ☺️

I agree... with ALL of the below the waist cupboards in a van. This is why I don't like the front opening fridges positioned low. Not only is bending over a pain (when one can't access from the top), bending over in a small space is difficult.

Madison Heights suggested drawers, but finding nice inexpensive well made baskets, stiff fabric bins or plastic bins and then building bed to fit may save a lot of money plus baskets with flat leather handles on either end would make them great to lift and set beside you on couch. Would be perfect for shoes, crafts etc. Still l❤ve your bed but yes... plywood is heavy and expensive.

@@IMEEMADE Hi there Laura and Lewis (or Louis), checking to see if you have rebuilt your bed yet? I bought a Ram Promaster 1500 high top, 136" WB and am building it out myself. I considered making the bed stationary and have nixed that idea because I will only use it for weekend travel and during the week, as an office for my real estate business. It's important to not have a "bed" appearance so the sofa - to - bed conversion is perfect! Very interested in your new design as I want to reduce any plywood use as well. There is a building product out now called "Tink Tube" that can be used with conduit, but I am not sure how it would be used to manufacture a furniture type frame. The YT channel "Green Shortz" is creating an actual camper with the skeleton of the camper being made of the conduit and "Tink Tube" connectors, so maybe you can figure that out, haha. I can envision things but don't have that engineering math or skill to create what I consider a "good idea" haha! Anyway looking forward to hearing back from you! Thanks for sharing your interesting builds with us!

Thank you! In my opinion, I think it's a wash between wood and 8020. Both will be plenty strong. Depending how you design the frame, weight would be about the same. And in the current situation, cost might be pretty even too. The thing that 8020 has over wood is that it looks cool and it can be modular. Just my 2 cents though!

Okay, this is really quite remarkable, to use drawer sliders for the pull out bed. It's so much more elegant than the slated pull out systems with legs etc (they always look so awkward) I have a question: when the bed it pulled out, does it lock in place or is the weight of the mattress enough to keep it from moving back in? Also, thanks for sharing your mistakes as well, it is really helpful to know what kind of pitfalls to avoid.

I am not sure if this was suggested, but what about a few small holes on the platform so the mattress can get air between the mattress and wood.

I have only seen one other bed that uses sliders... and I can't find the link anymore, lol. So I really appreciate the time you took to put together this video showing all the details! It is really great! Couple of questions please, what are the overall dimensions of the bed? And of the individual section? I want to build a bed like this but just for me... so I don't need the section closest to the wall. And since my van is only 48 inches wide in the back, I'm planning (I think... lol, still in design phase) an 18 inch wide section that will be the sitting portion... and a 12 inch wide section for the back up against the wall. With a 30 inch wide foam mattress that I will cut into two linear pieces, 18 and 12 inches wide. (I do like to sink down into the foam... haha ) So I guess I will need 18 inch full extension drawer slides? Would you agree? Thank you so much. I will be watching the video several times more I'm sure! :)
@IMEEMADE
@IMEEMADE 3 жыл бұрын
The overall dimensions of the bed is 75x50 inches. If I remember correctly the width of each portion starting from the wall is 3in - 16in - 12in - 19in. For your design - I could be wrong - but I believe you would use 12in full extension drawer slides. Best of luck on your build! Feel free to reach out to us if you have any more questions, we'd love to know how yours comes out!

@@IMEEMADE Thank you! Your build has such beautiful design details! Mine won't be quite as nice, but hopefully will be functional. :) I am still finalizing the design... I did buy 18" sliders, which will work, but 16" might be better... still mulling that part over. Watching your vid now after I've put so much thought into how to design the bed really helps a lot! I'll let you know how it goes... gracias!

Great idea. What drawer slides did you use? Do they extend to the full 55" of the bed?
@IMEEMADE
@IMEEMADE 3 жыл бұрын
Drawer slides are linked in the description for exact dimensions and price! It fit our space of 55" when extended to bed mode and there may be wiggle room up or down.

IMO there is nothing better than a rock n roll bed. It is cheap to buy and easy to install, strong and on a smaller van, so versatile. If you have a twin passenger seat swivel base you can seat 4, if you fit seatbelts you can drive with 5. 1 second down, 5 seconds up and store the bedding bedding the seat, even roll it back ready for use. You put a lot of work into that, with special tools, I installed mine and had it finished in an afternoon, that was 8 years and 300+ nights ago. I think the whole thing was £300.

I'm taking a chance that you might still be reading your comments on this video. Can you tell me approximately what the overall cost was of the final build
@IMEEMADE
@IMEEMADE 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! We'd guesstimate we spent about $600 on the bed build altogether, although lumber prices have gone up drastically since we made this. The main expenses were 3 sheets of plywood (~$55 each at the time), a shikibuton for the cushion ($240 on Amazon), and drawer slides ($100 for two - we needed 3 total). The drawer hinges and other supplies are linked in the description!

You could use a hole saw to cut hole patterns to reduce the amount of plywood, and provide more air circulation for the mattress. Then you wouldn’t have to do a complete rebuild.
