When I heard this song on Top of the Pops at the beginning of 1970 its simplistic lyrics and backing arrangement made it so special. Barry Mason who co-wrote the song ranks amongst the country's greatest songwriters, along with Les Read, Geoff Stephens and John Carter, who have left a wonderful musical legacy, and are hardly known to the public. The 1960s and 70s musical output will probably still be popular for the next 50 years given most of it will never seem outdated.

Tony Burrows, singing lead initially tried to get the single released under his own name but was turned down by the song's writer and producer Tony Macaulay. When "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" became a hit using session musicians so a group needed to be assembled rapidly to perform the song on this showing of Top of the Pops. The pair found a group called Greenfield Hammer, who a week later appeared on Top of the Pops as 'Edison Lighthouse' to mime to the fastest-climbing number-one hit record in history at that point.
