I believe the prime button is more for charging the auger with pellets. For example, when filling for the first time, press the prime button until the pellets get to the end. Or if you are changing pellet flavors, you could use the prime button to empty the auger.

Purchased this unit 2 weeks ago. We have done ribs, spatchcock chicken, wings, meatloaf, pizza and smoked deviled eggs! So far everything has been amazing with the meatloaf, chicken and eggs being our favorite so far. Cleanup has been fairly easy using a shop vac to clean the ashes and vinegar works surprisingly well to wipe the inside and the glass down.

DAMN GOOD SMOKER... I love mine. I was a dumb ass and cleaned it out with a pressure washer after my third smoke. I did put a couple rags in the burn bowl to shield it from water as I pressure washed it. As I was cleaning around the bowl I took the rags out and vacuumed and wiped everything down. At some point the electrode must have got wet or there was too much dampness. I turned it on thinking that heating it up and drying it out would be a good idea. I blew the quick blow fuse on it and the thing did not work at all. SO... I opened electronics and changed the fuse (Menards has them as I am sure other places do) They are small quick blow fuses, 2 in a pack. I put it back together again the next day since everything was dry and it all turned on and the auger spun and it started to heat and burn up the pellets..... WHAT REMAINED IN THE FRONT OF THE AUGER... after a few minutes it was no longer heating and nothing was coming forward from the auger. Because of dampness, not direct wetness, but ambient dampness and humidity from the pressure wash, the auger housing was plugged solid. This also gave me the LO TEMP or whatever that alarm reading is. SO I disassembled the whole underside of the cooker and the sawdust and pellets had plugged the housing almost solid, I used a punch/chisel to get the stuff out of there and that fixed it. I put the thing back together, (millions of screws) and I have not had any issues ever since. I have smoked about 15 sessions in this since May. Clean this thing with EZ off grill/oven cleaner, Orange safe grill/BBQ cleaner or other such items with a roll and a half of paper towel if you want it to look new. I typically deep clean it after every 5 smokes. General cleaning with the orange safe cleaner or vinegar works great too. Shop vac is a welcomed tool for this as well. This is a damn good smoker.

This is really an informative video. There are several videos by other people that show how to set up the Louisiana Grills/PitBoss vertical smoker, but this one really shows how to use it. Both the instruction manual and existing tutorials do not really show how to use the thermostat in combination with the Smoke setting and the Prime (pellet feed) button. Nice overview of that LG Vertical Smoker. I just picked one up myself. At that price, I had to grab one. They were selling pretty well at most Costco's here in Colorado. I'll be trying it out in the next few days. Looks like there's a burn in, but no need to season it. I have to read the manual on that front yet. My first cook will be either a tri-tip or ribs, followed by a spatchcock chicken, then a meatloaf, and then a ham for Easter. If this unit cooks well and is reliable, it will certainly prove to be a steal for only $449 with the cover included. Nice job on those ribs. I hope to replicate your results in the near future. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏻👍🏻🔥🔥 I'm also thinking on grabbing a LG900 grill at Costco as well, for my smaller cooks. It sells everywhere else for $899-999, but at Costco it's only $599!!! Included in the price is a cover and a stainless folding front work table. It has heavy porcelain-coated cast iron grill grates. You can also sear meats over a direct flame with temperatures up to 600°! Great for reverse searing steaks and other meats. But for now, I can't wait to put this smoker through its paces.
@Tonetrickybone5 жыл бұрын
milehighed5280 I look forward to seeing your results. I agree with you, $449 is a steal especially with the factory warranty. One thing I would change in my Instructions is a little lower heat in the last 1hr as I stated in the video. I said 250°, I would definitely lower that down to 215° or 225°. I Would just turn it to 250° then put on the smoke function and generally the heat will decrease while the smoke will increase. I have future videos already planned with pork butt, country style ribs, spareribs, meatloaf and much more. Follow me on Instagram @Homebrewsandbbq. Looking forward to seeing those smoke rings.

Thanks for that video, I found it very informative. I currently have a Weber propane grill (which I love) but I want to add a smoker to prepare stuff as you showed here. Would you recommend this Louisiana Vertical Pellet Smoker or is there another you like better? Also, I was a little confused about the two rubs you used, did you use both the AP Rub and the other (in the Mason jar, it seemed more like a cajun recipe?) I believe you said it was your go-to rub? Thanks, Chuck.
@Tonetrickybone4 жыл бұрын
Chuck Loya Yes, I absolutely recommend this smoker. Yes, I use the AP rub at the beginning and let it sit until it starts to sweat and then I cover it with my go to Rub. The rub I use can look like it packs some heat but it does not. The amount of sugar use counter acts the heat and it’s a real nice blend. It’s sweet at the beginning with a little heat on the backend. It’s very good. Happy smoking.

@Tonetrickybone5 жыл бұрын
Kayla Looney I apologize for the confusion. I used the salt pepper garlic as the AP Rub and let the ribs sit on the meat for a good half an hour. Then I came back with my pork rub and let sit while my smoker was getting up to temp. So technically i used both but you can taste the salt pepper garlic at the beginning and a pork rub at the end it’s all about layers my friend. While using this pork rub always always always put on the AP Rub first It adds a ton of flavor. Let us know how it turned out.

I am used to smoking using charcoal and wood chunks. I've been learning for a few years on Broil King Vertical Smoker, but need something wider so I don't have to cut a slab of ribs. A few questions: Is the noise from the unit loud enough for neighbors to be disturbed? Keep in mind I mean a metro Los Angles next door neighbor. Not a suburban neighbor who may be a distance away. You eluded to this, but do you find the cost benefits better than a coal and wood chunk smoker? Is the flavor of a pellet smoker as good as a charcoal based smoker? This is where I've noticed the largest difference in flavor from my smoker and others who have propane or electric smokers. My meat tends to come out more full of smoky goodness. How long does that water pan last? It's one thin being able to smoke for 15 hours, but how many water pan changes would you have to do?
@Tonetrickybone4 жыл бұрын
Tangier Clarke When I smoked a pork butt a couple months ago the smoke was 14hrs. I filled the pan twice at 225°. The smoker is very quite, my phone was pretty close to the smoker and sounded louder than it really is. I think a 20lb bag of pellets is cheaper than buying coal and wood chucks. The flavor of the smoke is still noticeable with pellets. I usually turn to the smoke feature the first 1-2 hours at 180° and then crank heat to 225°-250°. This infuses more Smoke flavor. All around great Smoker.

The pellet feed opening is so close to the fire pot, is there any risk of pellets burning up into the auger chute and catching the hopper pellets on fire. I've heard of this happening with some pellet smokers.
@Tonetrickybone4 жыл бұрын
Jim Welby I never had a problem with that happening. If it does there is a kill switch that automatically shuts the smoker off. The smoker pot that the auger fills was extremely cold one day and didn’t catch the pellets on fire quick enough and the pot overflowed. The smoker went to cool down mode and shit off. It was 8° outside though.

I have issue with the set temp being lower than the actual temp from the probes. I tested with the iGrill 2 probes and the probes that came with the smoker. Is there a fix for that?
@Tonetrickybone4 жыл бұрын
I have had problems with the iGrill probes before and could be the iGrill probes rather than the LG probes. I have not had and issues with the LG probes that came with the smoker. My probes in the past after cleaning them collect water in the probe itself and inturn throws off the correct temp, usually by quite a bit. I fixed my iGrill probes by putting them in the oven at 450° for about an hour. DO NOT put the plug in part in the oven only the wire and probe. After an hour the condensation and water pushes itself out of the probe where the wire goes in. This fixed my issues I was having. Make sure when cleaning probes don’t submerge in water, if water gets in the probe they do not work correctly. I hope this helps.

@sneakyblackdog5 жыл бұрын
Eddie the smoke position is a precook smoke to give it an extra dose at the beginning, I've seen it as low as 130 and up to around 180, pellets produce more smoke at low temps at higher temps not as much, remember you want blue smoke not white smoke
@jimbaker79785 жыл бұрын
Sneaky is correct!! Pellet anything smokes more at low temperature because the efficiency goes down. Increase the temperature set point, more pellets in the pot, the flame grows and the heat / efficiency goes up. I like to set mine at 200. I get nice blue smoke and start the cooking process. ALWAYS remember, you want your internal temp to make 140 degrees F, in 4 hours so you do not have bacterial growth, which can make you very sick

Wrapping ribs in tin foil during any part of the barbecue process? Blasphemy. Five hours of barbecuing at 200 degrees with no tin foil is the true way to barbecue...extremely tender, juicy, and delicious...perfection. P.S. - The term "smoking" is a misnomer when used for this type of cooking of meat. "Smoking" uses very low heat and dense smoke for the entire cooking process...between 100 and 175 degrees. Once you hit 200 degrees, you're barbecuing.
