Lourdes first apparition

The wonderful and touching film "The song of Bernadette" (1943), with Jennifer Jones, narrates, with great accuracy from the historical point of view and with a splendid acting, the story of Lourdes.
The young girl Bernadette Soubirous had 18 apparitions of the Virgin Mary, from 11th February to 16th July 1858, at Massabielle Grotto.
The Catholic Church, which has strict criteria for establishing the authenticity of apparitions, approved Lourdes apparitions on 18th June 1862. Bernadette was canonized 8th December 1933.

Everything about this segment is so wonderful and special. Fortunately the movie music composer Alfred Newman seems to have written the most perfect music - with the female chorus providing a "heavenly sound" surrounding Bernadette and this circumstance of the apparition - for this section. I've read that Newman knew that TSOB would be an important movie so he spent an extra long time composing the music. He said that of all the many film scores he's written, this one was his favorite.

I was in Lourdes three days ago and although I'm not particularly religious there is something about the place that does give you a feeling of inner peace.

This wonderful film owes much to Alfred Newman's beautiful score. Franz Werfel (the author of the novel) and his wife, Alma (Gustav Mahler's widow) were present for the recording of the music to this scene and were both "profoundly moved." The genesis of the novel is interesting. Werfels (he being Jewish) were fleeing the Nazis and found themselves in Lourdes. The locals told them of the story of Bernadette and he vowed that if they made it safely to the States, he'd write a novel about her.

Divine Mother appears in her myriad of forms, not to the pios and haughty or the biblical "experts", but to the innocent, those receptive to her Word. Look at who Mary has come to, usually young girls. Virtuous, unspoiled by the trappings of the world, she reaches out to those who are pure, and capable of unconditional Love and not to the cynical. Like Giorgio Maggi said below about Mary, "If you knew how much i loved you, you would cry of joy!"

Yes, this video segment is not high quality. TSOB was re-issued on DVD I think in 2006. The quality of the video part and the audio part is excellent. I think the movie was restored to a better condition for the DVD. [The DVD also has some extras. The commentary by 3 people is very informative.] Also, Varese Sarabande has all the music on a 2 CD set. The music is conducted by the composer Alfred Newman. The CDs are only in mono of course since TSOB came out in 1943.

a) God-approved icons are fine. Look at John 3:15. b) God is Soverign, but He does allow other people to assist Him in saving the world. My parents brought me to Christ and His Holy Church. And who helped bring Christ to all of us? Mary. Jesus saves, yes, but the Saints help us on the narrow path to Heaven.

Because we really read the Bilble that's why we know is in there. Yes, That's right Jesus is the flavor in our church. Mary is immaculate because she is the only women conceive without original sin, besides Jesus. God prepared her, because she was going to be the Mother of God's only son. The angel honor her, st. a) In that verse, she says "my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.." That's a title. And yes, she needed one. But instead of falling into the pit of sin and being pulled out of it, one can still be saved BEFORE falling in. The former applies to us, the latter to her. b) She is not a goddess. Agreed. We only worship God alone. HOWEVER Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is God & Man. She gave birth to GOD INCARNATE. We glorify her...because of Luke 1:48....all generations WILL CALL her Blessed.

Question: can I, as a baker, not wash a dish and then bake with that dish? No. I must clean it. If Jesus is the Bread of Life, a clean pan must be used. God applied the saving grace of the Bread to the pan. But a dirty pan cannot make a pure Bread. The pan must be clean. If Mary is a pan, and sin is inherited, how can she bear a sinless child? Answer: she is made clean.

@revaluator I do not think so. According to Wikipedia, she had two sons, born in 1940 and 1941, by her first husband, Robert Walker. This movie was made in 1943. By then, she was having an affair with David O. Selznik, and she and her first husband were separated, and then divorced in 1945. Linda Darnell, the woman who played the Virgin Mary, had a career that, at the time, was considered scandalous.

Actually Mary is sinless. Due to her purity and faith in God, she was chosen as the woman who would bear the savior of the world. Other than that, if you believe in Jesus then you believe in Mary because she is the only person to go to heaven whole body and soul.

Yes you are right, they are the saints from the past and now they are with the Lord Jesus but saints in a statue form that we see on wall is different. There is no question as Mary mother of God to equate her with divine powers like God is wrong again because God is sovereign, He will not allowed other entity to compete him especially in salvation because that is the work of the Son as Savior. There is no hope if we put our salvation to others except Jesus only through Him.

Yes, I agree when you say that everything must be tested. So you said Jesus is fully God, so Mary is Mother of God the Son, We believe that Mary died a little after Pentecost, because that's the last time we hear about Mary in the Bible. It really doesn't matter to me if Mary is mentioned or not after the acts of the Apostles, to believe that she was a sinless being. I am sorry, but Mary is mentioned in the Bible as part of God's salvation plan, keep reading and you will fint it there. God bless

There's no recorded Scripture to tell us what should be in Scripture. You got that from my Catholic ancestors. And he does, and if there are not saints in Heaven, who are the people in Heaven in Revelation 7? And she is the Mother of God. For she is the mother of Jesus. And He is God. She gave birth to God Incarnate. She is the Mother of God. You can't argue that. The Bible said that Jesus is God Incarnate and that he was born of the Blessed Virgin Man.

Yes but this Angel is talking in favor of Jesus, not against Jesus, all the angels that had appeared before Mary's apparitions, they have said to praise the name of Jesus.. If this angels would have been from satan, they wouldn't have bless Jesus name.. Didn't you know that? I cannot say if she was sinless or not. There is talk for both sides. All I can say is that she was born without the sin of Adam and Eve impressed on her soul. Here is some "humanly doctrines" that you accept: Trinity, Sunday being the Holy Day, the Canon of the whole Bible (albeit Luther's erroronous removals), the "Church" as an establishment, amongst other ideas. Tradition plays an important role in faith, and to deny it outright is just plain erronous.

I apologize. I just saw it. And John 3:14. God makes a comparison to an idol. why? God-approved statutes are fine. And if you want a Marian prophecy, Genesis 3:15. The translation reads that the woman will strike the head of the heel. And why? Because God is perfect, and being born into imperfection offends Him. So he cleaned his mother to make sure he would not be offended. Since you and I do not bear God, this process is not needed.

If that is your personal belief of Mary as "born without sin" it is up to you but if you ask the Bible, the Bible will refute you. Humanly doctrines can be acceptable together with Bible based teachings. The Bible or the Word of God will prevail on how salvation and righteousness obtain and it will not change because of Mary's born self righteous ...because God is not a changeable minded (James 1:17) and that by faith alone and accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior no one else...

Luke 1:46-47 Mary said she needs a "Saviour" yes I know many of you here will protest but this verse still in the Bible... Mary is not a god nor possess divine power...she was just simply chosen by God as instrument for Jesus' birth. And Mary never mentioned herself as the Mother of God but a plain handmaiden Luke 1:48 ONLY THE CATHOLICS keep on glorified her equate with God to the point of making idols and carved images of her and worship her...even Jesus simply call her as "woman" not "queen"

John 3:15 is not about icons read back. 1 Peter 2:22 "He committed no sin and no deceit was found in his mouth" referring to Jesus Christ take note NOT MARY. "God-approved statutes are fine" do you think all of this carved idol are God-approved? its a good business nowadays and you know that is the motive of making idols and idols are condemned in the BIble. If you read prophetic verses "woman" usually pertains to nation or country not individual. The only prophetic verse I found about Mary can be found in Isaiah 7:14 not in Genesis 3:15.
