Abundant hot springs are another special feature of Nisyros. In many places along the coasts of the island hot water flows, with temperatures ranging from 30 to 61 degrees. It is a mixture of seawater and rainwater with the geothermal fluids of the warm upper horizon. These, being warm and light, are able to reach the surface by following the large cracks and crevices in the area. The most famous of the hot springs are those of Loutra, 1500 meters north of Mantraki, and of Thermiani, next to the church of Panagia tis Thermiani, at the northern end of the village of Palos. Both are classified as "medicinal hydrosulfide alipiges".
On the nearby bank, at the foot of the mountain, there is a cave where those who suffer from pain come to be healed, stay for a while and then leave healthy. The last period in which a therapeutic center operated in the area was from 1895 to the early 1930s, the famous "Termi Pantelidis".
Today the old bathrooms have been restored, but they are not yet ready for operation. The spring temperature is 33 degrees, but is expected to rise 8-10 degrees if the water is pumped. The waters of the thermal spring of the Baths have been used by the Mandraki Municipal Baths since 1872. They are famous for their therapeutic properties against rheumatism, arthropathy, skin diseases and diseases of the circulatory system. The maximum temperature in spring is 46 degrees.
A third well-known hot spring is the one in Avlakiou Bay. Its waters were used for spa treatments before the settlement was abandoned. Warm water flows into the sea today and its maximum temperature is 61 degrees. In addition to the hot springs, there are many places in Nisyros where hot steam comes out. Two of these places were once used as natural saunas. The main one, known since ancient times, is located on the site of Pyria, where the steam bath chamber and adjacent auxiliary bath buildings are still preserved. The other location is at the entrance to the Emporios settlement. The steam temperature is 34-35°C.
