The entière thing xD my head canon is that she started to actually fall for him at that precise moment, realizing how much of a dedicated and living husband he must have been for caring as much as crying her name in his sleep. Before that, he was just a rude mute nobody she was forced to look after.

The idea that Calypso knows that a god doesn't die because she tried to delete system 32 herself is very strong. Considering that she has been alone since the Titanomachy is not that crazy. Also the ending... Odysseus has already gone so far that not even a goddess can calm his pain is so strong.

@@creepymaster2746 I'm so Glad you caught up on her feeling lonely After the Titanomachy. I do think that Gods can die and she is a special case of 'punished to live for ever', Hence 'The Immortal'. Considering Ody, I really took to heart that he was offered Everything he had in Ithica, a throne, a wife, childrens, forever, immortality and all, and he still could not forget his home and his wife. Mots importantly, all the things he did to get back to her. To me he feared taking up Calypso's offer and having killed his crew and friends for nothing. Penelope is only a Ghost, a memory. He could settle. Take another shot at life. But the guilt prevents him from it. To me, the gods took them both everything they had, and they can't even heal together.

I LOVE THIS! The mixture of hopeless and depression that Odysseyus displays is just perfectly heartbreaking! You can see how he has basically lost the will to live and has become Calypso's toy, unable to resist and loosing the will to even try too since he knows it's hopeless. This is also the first animatic I saw of him actually trying to jump off the cliff which I think is a great detail! Nothing of himself belongs to him anymore, not even his death

@@tingchoi1113 Thank you! I glad it all came across. My motivation for drawing this was to huminize Calypso a notch, and make her realistically lonely and concerned for him, truely believing they could bond over share trauma, and it backfires horribly. The fact that Ody couldn't submit to her if he tried, and gosh he tried, made him way more unhinged than I initially planned. Had to had wine in the equation, and make some callbacks to modern paintings depicting him like an emo depressed boy, but not making light of his depression. I think I put a lot of my own hardships in those two. And the fact that his suffering is permeating might be a sign I could let it out a bit. Imagine if he had the kids in this version. How even more crushing it would have been. But he can't in Epic because of the next song. Too complicated for the plot of EPIC, I suppose. But I really wanted to show that even if he had kids with Calypso, even becoming king of the Isles, hé would have felt even more lonely and estranged.

Good touch that Ody has a crutch near the beginning (because he’s still healing) and it disappears during the montage (to show that a significant amount of time has passed).

Absolutely Love your interpretation of Calypso and why she falls in love with Odysseus. It's not love at first sight at the first person she’s seen in centuries, it’s slowly falling for someone who’s been hurt like you and hoping you can bond over that trauma. I really like what you did for 1:25 - 1:29. Instead of a comedic moment, it's a humanizing moment for Calypso. I get why some people characterize Calypso being a monster, but I don’t think that characterization works for EPIC. The entire point of “Not Sorry For Loving You” is trying to get the listener to sympathize with Calypso and at the end of the song Odysseus even says he loves her, even if it isn’t romantically, I don’t think that could work if Calypso is a monster.

I really wanted this question to be, after sometime being mute and depressed, to bé thé first moment Ody lit up and reacted to her probing him. Before that, he was a burden to her. Her task. After that, she Saw he was capable of love. To the point he had nightmares about reaching out to Penelope. That's the moment they started to connect for me, in a weird way.

@@idk-9913 Thank you! I'm glad their compliticy is conveyed. And I needed the Nymphs to show how Calypso is Queen of her island and past the illusions and the 'nymphs!=humans', her Island is a lot like Ithica. It's never like having another human being or god around, but it's a real life none the less. A perfect one. The point of Ody's depression to me wasn't being stranded on a nowhere Island, but rather being offered a version of the life he wanted but with none of what was important to him. Hence, the Nymphs.

Ok, the simplistic art style is such a unique way of portraying this song. Especially when Ody is on the cliff and he hears Polites, Eurylochus, and his mom and he becomes just a few sketchy lines showing how hearing them just broke him. Also, I love how Ody and Calypso are much tamer in your version. Calypso isn't aggressively simping for Ody in the first part and while Ody isn't happy, he's still cordial with Calypso as they spend more time together. This was awesome!!

Thank you! I thought other versions were plenty dramatic enough about the echos, and I really tried to focus on the aching of being with Calypso even if she was 'nice' to him. I recommand seing other versions where the three echos are haunting and brought me to tears; like the one where you can deduce the way they died on their ghost form for exemple. On my part, I just anted to explore the fact that Ody "can't see" Calypso, or connect with her more than this because she reminds him too much of what he lost and might loose again if he allows himself to care for anyone again beside... the 'ghost' of his own wife. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

i actually really like this, sure calypso can be viewed as a bit manipulative but it comes of more as someone broken who desperately wants to help, then falls in love and wants to keep that person close. rather than some one who wishes to essentially kidnap someone

@@dancingimmortal448 I do think it still qualifies as kidnapping, and I wanted to make it very obvious that she knows exactly what she is doing by making her confess she is the one keeping her from leaving, and him trying to have a Real conversation about it. Of course him having night terrors doesn't help his point. The fact that he is lonely and exhausted too. But they both know she is robbing him of his autonomy. It just took them years to just accept that it's not love or Care, just both of them coping in the worse way possible.

that's such a great catch on this song!! the idea of showing more of his stay and state there, not only the first day and then right to his mental breakdown adds to the story. when I was listening to this part "last time I checked, godesses can't die" I also came to interpretation that wait... maybe the one who was trying to kїll her was herself? Because: 1. No one can come or go 2. "Last time **I** checked" (it could be overinterpretation, as "last time someone checked, godesses can't die" wouldn't fit in rythm? and it also just doesnt sound correct, but not sure, english is not my first language. "last time someone tried, godesses can't die" sounds more correct but still doesn't fit in rythm, ig) 3. In some versions of the myth she unalїved herself after Odysseus left. Theoriticaly she didn't need to be suїcїdal before to do that, but it feels more likley. The third point is also what happens there to Odysseus. We see him having suїcїdal actions before, such as trying to drown himself. And Calypso not letting him?? Wow. That's so much more tragic for the stories of them both. Feels like it's really the one thing that kept him alive. Because honestly, this mans will of live was always based on idea of getting home. So maybe for first, first two or max three years he was hoping him being on the island is just a stage. But he was on the sea for "only" two years, and honestly it feels like when you have your life is in danger it's easier to keep going, like you're not questioning anything as you don't have time for that. He had his ship and he had a purpose and a hope of getting home. Even after his crew opened the bag and they ended up far from Ithaca, he still didn't lose hope that if he keep going he'll be home one day. But there? There he can't keep going. He stays in one place. He doesn't have to fight anything. He isn't in control, as he was as capitan. He can't set the course and swim. So much time to question everything and lose hope. In fact, he isn't in control of anything. Even of if he wants to take his life. Truly show how fully "out of his control" he was. Screaming for Athena also come out so much more tragic in that version. It feels like truly screaming, crying not just calling out for her. It's not just "I can't take this anymore, Athena take me" and "Athena help" but if feels like "ATHENA, DO ANYTHING" while literally in hysteria, being out of mind, as he is right after an attempt which again failed. Truly appreciate the content.

@@aphpoznan Thank you for your comment, I'm glad you appreciate the same things that made me sad imagining their relationship. I did wanted to imply she tried to end her life before. A Friend even reminded me that the direction of the cut was wrong to show her immortality. If she really knew what she was doing, it would have been vertical. But it's less easy to convey with this style of render. If I ever do a clean of this, her scars will probably be in an X shape. I was really bothered that even if Time is shown to pass in other animatics, it didn't convey Calypso is Queen of her Isles, even if it's not gods or humans who live here, and how close what she offered was to his original life in Ithica, maybe even better. And how much it is exactly why he can't accept her love. I wanted to be Real in some extant, but not for him. Out of contexte, Calypso is the dream. She is not young and naive. She does feel lonely, but she has her own shit beside him. But she fell for him anyway. Tried to push him to settle here anyway. I Saw some brillant other ones depicting her straight up assaulting him, or numbing his mind, and I love those but it was way too simple for my taste. You're the first one claiming to outright notice his 'trying to maybe drown himself while swiming', congrats? Other have pointed out Calypso using her power on him as foreshadowing for the end. In my head he wasn't being so councious that was what he was doing. A passing thought of staying there to stay quiet a Little longer before she comes to babysit him, and both of them trying to tone down it happened and cover it with fights and laughters. But that was one of those moment where if they had a Little l'ESS layerd, they would have stopped and talk, about Calypso being controlling, and him being in a weak mental state.

@JW-no8yb I actually made a post for posing and expression sheets before starting working on this. Maybe I could do a Quick turnaround of her. I tried to respect the fact she supposedly have Legendary curly hair and make her silhouette différent from what I imagined for Penelope in Little Wolf or Circée. I didn't try to find her skin color, but I still wanted to make it possible to get her a northafrica skintone. Their face is less consistant than a Corto Maltez page in here, But I'm very glad you enjoy this version of the Gal! Thank you!

She still keeps him on the Island by choice. She even confess to him after all his attempt at leaving, expecting him to express rage and frustration, and he didn't snap at her. He doesn't agree, but he is too tired to fight back when she actually is so 'nice' with him.
