Something (American audiences in particular) overlook or just don't know about is how very upper class acting became in Britain. It's a lark, a profession that's cerebral but quirky and doesn't get your hands dirty. Obviously there are exceptions, but the private school club to acting pipeline runs deep. Feels a lot more nepo than a boom-mic operator's kid catching a break lol.

Really? I don't think that's true at all unless you're only counting certain people as 'real actors'. There's definitely a huge problem with the Oxbridge acting network dominating stages / BBC high drama / famous comedians, but even then not all of them will have come from upper class backgrounds. Also if anything I'd say the majority of UK actors/actresses are middle class. Also, when you say Britain do you mean Britain or England? There's a few Welsh actors and Scottish actors I can think of that I'm pretty sure don't come from upper class backgrounds e.g. Michael Sheen, Luke Evans, James McAvoy, David Tennant etc. Plus are you really telling me all the actors/actresses on EastEnder's are faking the accent? Again, are you not counting soap opera actors as 'real actors'? Also I assume your 'it's a lark' comment is meant to be facetious, because if not that's an incredibly reductive and disrespectful view of the performing arts. Acting, music, art in general is a great way for people who are failed by the education system to make a living if those professions were only respected more at the early stages. Not everyone has to study STEM to be worth something! As a final note, I personally think the Tory Government's drastic funding cuts is a sign that the upper class are very much against arts professions, if anything.

It's true in the US as well but not quite as obvious. From TV to film to music to stage acting, it's so much harder for the non-wealthy and the non-connected to break into the industry. A lot of that is driven by the crisis of affordability and cost of living, and it's absolutely affected the whole landscape of artistic expression.

I agree with this, as a classically trained actor, the people around me were all upper class people just with “working class” accents. Apart from me (middle class, able to pay for my fees and auditions because I didn’t have to pay much in rent to my parents) and I couldn’t afford to move to London or get the train and took a lift at 5am to the edge of London were my dad worked and worked both weekend days to pay the tube fare. none of my classmates could fathom that I couldn’t afford £40 to have a lie in. Not as a one-off, not as a routine. Im not saying they were hard working and dedicated, they really were! But they were also the only ones able to pay for the auditions, fees, previous workshops, coaching etc to get in and stay in. But they all had regional accents giving the illusion of inclusivity.

@@ellencoleman4604 I think you’d be really surprised to know the class background of many actors on East Enders. Regional accents dont define class imo. My reading of the cutting of arts support by the tories is that they don’t see it as a profession, or something that should be supported - ie you can do it if you’re rich enough not to need an income.
@belorama8

@@ellencoleman4604 I Don't think L G is saying that the profession is a 'Lark' or 'cerebral and quirky' because they themselves are disrespecting the field. They're saying how the profession is treated as a frivolous pursuit unless your family already has some financial maneuverability. Conservatives cutting support for the arts directly competes with people who aren't already rich being able to get jobs in the arts. Them cutting support for the arts nearly guarantees the only people who end up with artistic careers being rich people.

With regard to the comment about anybody else would be thanking their parents in awards speeches (in other industries), historically, people just did what their parents did. That's how we got a lot of last names, it's why we have businesses that are ___ & Son, like, it's not weird to do what your parents do. Hollywood is one of those places where they have to pretend like everyone who's at the top got there because of their unique scrappy genius, rather than admitting that for some families, acting (or writing/producing/directing) is the family business.

Drew Barrymore is like a fifth generation Nepo baby. The concept really has been around forever. Gywenth Paltrow, Angelica Houston, Tracey Ellis Ross, Jennifer Aniston and Mira Sorvino, and Angelina Jolie are all nepo babies. 😊 Edit: don’t forget, Micheal Douglas and Jeff Bridges are “nepo babies” and they are in their 70’s

In the last year, I have had the opportunity to get greater insight into how certain organizations operate. And it is shocking to me that a lot of organizational awards (“so-and-so of the year,” etc.) are often used to recognize people who aren’t being promoted or selected for advancement. All these years, I was mystified how the dumbest/worst people got recognized for honors when, in fact, they are consolation prizes (“Oh, John got that award because they screwed him over for getting promoted.”). Likewise, some people get promoted because they do an unenviable job a la the mafia. Example: Someone I know was made a Director at my former company after he spent a year cutting a division and getting rid of a bunch of positions at the direction of the company. Less than a year later, his job was eliminated. No one was sorry to see the henchman go.

I remember years ago, I saw a Colombian novela called por que Diablo and the detection of poverty and how it was trapping young teens in a life of crime was both so real and mystical I don't want to see it twice for fear of ruining the memory. The actors, while very attractive, look like any kid I could have walked by in my environment. I saw parts of the Telemundo remake called Mas sabe el Diablo and it just looked completely produced. And all gosh, you just mentioned Lily Rose Depp. This women is going to be in Nosferatu with my horror king, Bill Skasgard (of the obviously prestigious Skasgard's). Am so pissed, no vampire will want to drain me dry.
