The main riff is primarily guitar (the great Richie Blackmore, formerly of Deep Purple) with keys basically playing in unison. The guitar riff is played with double stops which gives it that extra crunch, and the bass chugging along adds some low end heft. Possibly my favorite Rainbow song. Definitely top 3 at least.

@@MrAitraining I'm sorry, I can't agree. Joe Lynn Turner made Rainbow seem effeminate ( Even Ritchie says this ) . Graham Bonnet is a far superior singer than JLT ever was. Not only that, but JLT is the most arrogant singer ever. JLT believes that be was the best singer in Rainbow and Deep Purple too. If he was so fantastic, then why did Ritchie not take him back to Rainbow and replace him with not one, but two more singers? Ritchie had actually approached Ronnie James Dio to go back to which Ronnie was agreeable but after so many delays, Ronnie walked away in favour of Heaven and Hell. I got that from the horse's mouth if you wish to dispute it.

The late great Craig Gruber is the man behind this terrific bass line. A jazz bass devotee and certified master of his craft. Like Ronnie James Dio, he also came from the hard rock band Elf that released three albums 1972-75 (though on the first one, Ronnie played bass - for a long time it was his main instrument and he was very good at it). Keyboard player Mickey Lee Soule and drummer Gary Driscoll also came from that band. The latter is dead too - he was murdered in 1987 under deplorable circumstances, while buying drugs. The final member of Rainbow was of course their founder and leader, former Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. "Man on the silver mountain" was the opening track and lead single from Rainbow's first album "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow". Ronnie wrote the lyrics about Deep Purple's manager Bruce Payne, and his obsession with making and keeping money. Ronnie knew Bruce from Elf supporting Deep Purple on several US tours.

Wonderful! For us oldies, this was the 1st riff we heard whilst nervously sampling the new musical direction of Mr "Riffy" Blackmore after leaving Purple! It was so refreshing and exciting, but just the start of an awesome journey! The next LP, "Rising", took everything to a new level and became one of the finest ever - from any band! You'll see this mentioned numerous times here, but Stargazer is an absolute must - undoubtedly Dio's finest vocal performance from the studio! But don't make the mistake many reactors do, by only doing one half of the story as the next track on the album, "Light in the Black" completes the story of this mini rock opera! If you do manage to do one (or both), I would strongly suggest you study the lyrics first - find out and study the story line and it's potential modern-day alternate meanings! Also, by studying them, you'll recognise that story line being perfectly told by Ritchie on his guitar during Stargazer - arguably his finest studio solo! Rainbow, as with Purple, were undoubtedly a Live band which I was lucky to see on numerous occasions and I truly feel sorry for those Rock fans that missed them - especially with very little footage available now. "On Stage" offers some near-on perfect tracks, in particular "Catch the Rainbow" and also there is a concert from 1995 with a different line-up that provide brilliant tracks and all still waiting to be reacted to! Good Luck with your journey!

Ronnie James Dio never fails to give my goosebumps when he sings. One of the best rock vocalists and the Godfather of Metal. 🤘😎🤘Hard to believe that he started out singing in a 50s Doo Wop bands. May he rest in peace. Please check out "Stargazer" next. Everything that's killer about Rainbow and Dio is in that song.

Dio (Ronnie James Dio) was the Lead Vocalist of Rainbow BEFORE he joined Black Sabbath. >> Check out "Run With The Wolf" by Rainbow & "Heaven & Hell" by Black Sabbath. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK !! #RainbowRISING

DIO's first band Elf played at a party about a half mile from my home and I could hear it clear as a bell.

I first heard this in 1979. I absolutely love it. You should try the live version, which is much faster.
