The original was by Arlo Guthrie and well worth a listen. His father was Woody Guthrie legend of folk and country, best known for the song This Land is Your Land. Woody was born in 1912 in Okemah,Oklahoma died in 1967. Arlo was born on 1947 in Coney Island NY.Arlo performed at Woodstock. Either one of these men would be great to listen to,Woody was hero to about every other folk country artist that came after.

I have to add myself to the listeners who have already told you that this song "belongs" to Arlo Guthrie (Woody Guthrie's son), who was very big from the 18 1/2 minutes long "Alice's Restaurant". It was also sung beautifully by Judy Collins on her "Judith" album. You might not want to spend so much time for "Alice", but it's so much fun to hear.
@KenRoerden

I have loved This Land Is Your Land as far back as I can remember. Woody Guthrie was an American folk music icon. Arlo followed in his footsteps and I grew up with Alice's Restaurant. It is worth doing here. He also did The Motorcycle Song. He did Coming Into Los Angeles at Woodstock. The City Of New Orleans is his best. The tempo is just a little bit slower than this version and the one by Judy Collins and just right for Jay's cigar, whiskey and hammock.

Speaking to Amber’s insightful comments about travel.. Mark Twain would agree 😊 ““Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

Jay, you nailed it: Willie Nelson is quintessentially American, as are all the Highwaymen. Amber, you spoke truth about travel: as a train passenger veteran I always look forward to meeting people from many walks of life & sharing stories with them. And the unhurried pace of train travel allows you to see into the heart of America rolling outside the window. Fun fact: Steve Goodman wrote the song & was a fan of Arlo Guthrie. One time in 1970 Arlo was playing in a Chicago bar & after the show was over, the bar's owner introduced Steve to him by saying Steve wanted to sing him a song. Arlo was tired of hearing people play their songs to him but Steve persisted & Arlo said, "Tell you what. Buy me a beer. I'll sit here & drink it. As long as it lasts, you can do whatever you want." The song Steve played was "City of New Orleans." Arlo loved it & made a hit song out of it. 🙂

This is more folk than country. Arlo is son of Woodie Guthrie, Woodie wrote among others: 'This Land is Your Land", "So Long (It's Been Good to Know Yuh)". This is an American classic. Don't know if there a gathered "American Songbook", if so, this would be in it. Kris Kristofferson wrote 'Me and Bobbie McGee" for Janis Joplin.

As many have said this song was written by Steve Goodman, from Chicago. He was a big Chicago Cubs fan, he wrote and sung "Go Cubs Go", but the one you need to listen to as baseball season is getting ready to start is "A Dying Cub Fan Last Request". Unfortunately Steve passed away in 1984, from Leukemia, he never did see his Cubs win the WS. As another song Steve wrote, that you may have heard, "You Never Call Me By My Name" sung by David Allen Cole. John Prine co-wrote it with Steve, but did not want to be included in the credits, he did not want anyone that they were making fun of them with the "4th verse".

Excellent song! One of my favorite by this band. Willie is awesome, but the group itself is iconic. But this song has such a story and just makes you feel good, the harmonies are beautiful, the harmonica sets the mood and you see a bunch of brothers enjoying their time together on stage. All of them unique and different in their beliefs but sharing a bond. PERFECT! Backstory: This song was written/composed by Steve Goodman in 1970, released in 1972, which Arlo Guthrie covered and made popular. Goodman wrote this while traveling on the train with his wife and what he saw out the window and what people were doing in the train. Everything in the song actually happened on the train ride. When he returned home he had heard that the train was being decommissioned due to a lack of passengers.

The only one hurrying was Willie. The harmonica was a nice touch. Willie ruined it by rushing ahead instead of letting the lyrics blend with the instruments. I wonder if the others liked that or if it was annoying and they were just too classy and professional to let it bother them.

Arlo is far, far better than these slack-jawed hillbillies. No idea how they even found this horrible video, because the one with Arlo is plastered all over the place when you search it here.

Most people won't experience riding on a train. I only have once. My best friend was a special ed teacher with a degree in psychology and music therapy, and professional musician. He loved trains, having lived in Chicago when he was young. He was murdered, stabbed in the heart by a disturbed student at John Tyler High in Tyler. His friends and I scattered his ashes while riding a train in East Texas.

Willie's guitar is named 'Trigger' & you can see he is wearing a hole thru it where his wrist rubs & today the hole is completely worn thru... and Willie is still using it. Saw him perform live a couple months ago on Colbert I think it was. I would love to have attended one of these concerts. And, I like how they backed each other on one another's 'solo' songs & then songs together. Legends, all.

I found the footage of this concert about a year or so by coincidence and I have been enthralled by most of the performances. I personally most enjoy "There Ain't No Good Chain Gang" and "The Best of All Possible World", but there's so many more good songs worth listening. "Good Hearted Woman", "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way", "Sundy Morning Coming Down", and so many more. Hope to see you listen to more of the Highwaymen!

"City of New Orleans" certainly belongs in The Great American Songbook. But do listen to the original version by Arlo Guthrie (son of folk singer Woody Guthrie who wrote "This Land is Your Land" -- also worth a react). His rendition is truly wonderful. And yes, it ran from Chicago to New Orleans. The songwriter was the late Steve Goodman, and this is one of the most poignant songs in popular American music. Love the reaction, as always. Peace. ❤

I was about 10 yo when the Highwaymen were at their peak and my uncle owned a trucking company. he LOVED all of these guys but particularly Wille. that summer break he came to visit driving his beautiful kenworth with which I was fascinated. little did I know he only passed by on that one particular visit to pick me up and go on a run across country. it was the best time of my life and these gents were on heavy rotation. I cant hear their music wo traveling back in time; sitting in those air cushioned big boy seats and all the glory of the dash of that kenworth. what a lifelong memory! thank you

One of the guitarists who played with the Highway Men is a Brit called Hank Marvin. He was in a band called The Shadows who also worked with the British singer Cliff Richard. 'Apache' was their biggest hit.

Elvis's last concert and last song performed in downtown indianapolis is beautiful and so sad at the same time. He was so messed up that he forgets the lines to the song. But you can still see him giving it his all. Less than two weeks later he was dead. When Pricilla left him, he self-medicated himself into the grave. Tragic ending but what a performer.

Jay and Amber, always love your reactions, your faces, your enjoyment of the different types and styles of music. You two need to run to a band called Leonid and Friends. They are a tribute band that do mostly horn bands, the music of Chicago, Earth Wind and Fire, Steely Dan etc. But don't let the "tribute band" description scare you off, these are all top tier musicians who many believe perform at LEAST as good as the original bands if not better. Check out their "I've been searchin so long" video and be prepared to be blown away!

This song speaks to me so deeply. I am the son of a railroad fireman/engineer. I grew up in a town that was largely built by the railroad. When semi trucks and interstate highways started getting larger the railroads started to disappear. My hometown is a shell of its former self. Every time I go back home it makes me very sad to think of what it used to be.

This song was written by Steve Goodman, who played it for Arlo Guthry, hoping he would record it Guthry did record it and it charted for him. Goodman recorded his own version later. The song has become kind of a folk anthem and has been recorded by numerous artists.

This song is written by the late, great Steve Goodman. He was a friend of John Prine's in the Chicago bar days. One night, Arlo Guthrie was playing at a small club. After his performance, Steve Goodman walked up and asked Arlo, "can I play you a song, I think you will like it." Arlo said, "kid, I am going to sit here, drink a beer, and you can do whatever you like while I drink it." He played this song and wowed Arlo, who covered it. Arlo said, "best beer I ever had!". Arlo's only top ten hit was this song. If you get a chance, check out Tribute to Steve Goodman. He died young of lukema but his songwriting endures to this day.

My parents took myself and my little brother on a train trip from Tampa, Florida to New Orleans (a night trip), back in the late 60's, from what I remember of the daylight part of it, it was wonderful. The rocking of the train will definitely put a young kid to sleep.
