From Leo: I have bought and sold enough guitars since the early 70's to eclipse the stock at most independent guitar shops. I have never felt any hate for the Epiphone headstocks. Simple and functional. The sharper the points on any headstock design, the more likely to see the paint or binding chipped off. Not many Kramers out there that don't have damaged headstocks.

Marketing. Gibson (and other manufacturers) have sued over such things. It would be ironic (hypocritical?) for Gibson to allow a headstock design that they had sued over to be duplicated on Epis. Honestly? I don't know why people get so obsess about the headstock... I see your point, but I really don't care at all, with or without the horns, I could really care less about it. As long as it stays in tunes, is comfortable to play and has a great sound, I'm all good. Fun fact: Maybe, only 5 years ago, I was still a very gear snob. I always thought Epiphones were guitars for people that couldn't afford Gibson, and Squier were for kids that couldn't get a Fender... you know all this kind of gear elitist non-sense. And then, I had the chance to work in studio that was full of very good gear, high-end, rare and vintage stuff, Custom Shop, Private Stock, you name it. And if it's true that some gear were just awesome to play, I discovered that we can find great gear at any price point and that the name on the headstock doesn't mean much. I have a $300 MIJ '94 Strat that has nothing to be shamed in comparison to the $10k Masterbuilt John Cruz '96 Strat I had in the studio. They are different, yes... but not good and bad, just different. I slowly started to like gear for what it is and not for what I think it is because of the marketing, the branding, the perception, etc... And that's why my last guitar I bought 2 weeks ago was an Epiphone 1966 Century James Bay Ltd Ed.... and guess what? It's awesome. And yes, I still have PRS guitar that are worth more than $3k and Two-Rock Amp that also is ver $3k... but it doesn't mean I wouldn't play with a used $300 Amp such a Fender Blues Junior (or something else). Let's just say it's an awesome time to play music with all choices of gear we have out there at any price point, for any style and any person preferences. So, if one doesn't like the Epiphone headstock, it's not a big deal, there's many other brand with great products out there, that hopefully, will satisfy him/her. We can easily get caught into the whole "gear nerding" thing (I play guilty on that), but in the end of the day, it's just tools folks... just tools :) My 2¢

LOVE the Epi headstock! IMHO, the "lips" at the very top are more pronounced, and extend slightly further up, i.e.: the headstock itself is a little longer, creating more of a curved section from the top down to the "shoulders". Just my humble opinion, but I agree totally with another post commenting on how the Epi reminds of 'art deco' and beautiful appointments in early skyscrapers. Also reminds me of the beautiful lines of curved panel and chrome trim on some '30's through '60's automobiles. I like 'em both, though; just can't *$$ afford $$* the Gison Les Paul!

I myself will say this to everyone. From what I've gathered, many people disliked Epiphone guitars over the headstock design and they often believed they are the bastardized models of the Gibson counterparts. What many people DON'T even know that this headstock design was the downsized version of the vintage 1930s Epiphone Emperor guitar headstock. Epiphone Emperor acoustic jazz guitar was first debuted in 1935 to compete with the Gibson Super 400 acoustic guitar. By 1992, or earlier, the Emperor headstock was adopted and redesigned to be compact for regular solid-bodied guitars. This includes the Les Paul Model. Please understand that Gibson and Epiphone were fierce rivals long before Gibson bought Epiphone in May of 1957. In truth, these Gibson-designed Epiphone guitars are their adaptations of the Gibson guitar classics. In case you want to know about the history of Epiphone guitars, please read this book, "Epiphone: The Complete History" by Walter Carter. In case you want to know about Les Paul guitars and how this strange Epiphone headstock design came to being, please read this book, "The Modern Era Of The Les Paul Legacy, 1968-2009" by Robb Lawrence on page 161. Now there's a piece of history for everybody! ;) Take care, everyone. ;)

I also like the fact that the new headstock isn't just a straight copy of the Gibson open book headstock but re-introduces the early 60's American made Epiphone style headstocks, that Kalamazoo used, aka the early style headstock that Paul McCartney's Casino has. Epiphone are keeping some of their own identity and heritage by reintroducing a previous Epiphone style, meaning the guitars in the new Epiphone Gibson inspired range, are not just straight rip offs of Gibson's.

If someone comments about an ugly headstock on a guitar that I am attempting to play, I stop playing [which may be a relief], and bash them over the head with the guitar. If it's a nylon string guitar, I gently weep, as those guitars are very lightly constructed, and will break upon impact with an adult human head. I do not bash children, however rude they are.

Cute dog Darrell! I think the clipped ears make it look kind of unique even if it doesn't look that good like a Gibson headstock. But it doesn't really matter.

Great video! When Epiphone released their first Les Paul in 1989, it had an open book headstock, set neck, and humbuckers. From what I found online, the 1989 model was a very good copy of the Gibson Les Paul. Because of this, they made changes in the following years to make it more affordable.

I have to say, Braun's playing in his videos is usually as tasty as can be. I really like his slow, melodic stuff. Better than a lot of famous people. But I guess with almost 800k subs, he's famous too now :)

Both the Sheraton and the Casino have different headstocks than the Epiphone Les Paul. I have a Casino and it has a great headstock....just as unique as my Gibson Les Paul

I can't think of any other brand that uses a different headstock for their 'budget' brand. I mean, Fender don't change theirs on Squiers. I honestly think Gibson would sell more if they used the 'open-book' shape.

because vanity will drive people to buy gibsons purely for the shape of the headstock

Ronnie Nose: I don't agree. Epiphone was a big brand before Gibson and they should keep their logo/headstock as it is!
@oliverle84386 жыл бұрын
I do agree with everything except Fender does technically change the headstock shape on the squiers. They almost all have CBS style headstocks, hence why there are bigger and fatter than regular, which other than the squiers are only seen on 70’s style models.

I’ve had an Epi LP for about 20 years, and I just bought a “real” Gibson. I was about to sell the old one, but I guess I’ll keep it, it’s a great “bang for the buck” guitar and my dad gave it to me. As for the headstock, I’ve never had a problem, I changed the nut and it improved a lot.

I always thought their HS looked good on their jazz boxes. But on solid bodies I thought they made them look neck heavy or It just seemed too big for smaller bodies. Good vid.

That's funny because my ES-339 semi-hollow body isn't clipped like an Epiphone Les Paul, but it's not exactly like a Gibson either.

I love my Epiphone les Paul Traditional pro 2 it's the best guitar I own now and always will be my favorite no matter how much of a better guitar I get my hands on. Mainly because it was my first serious guitar and my first les Paul (no I was not paid to say that)

The Epiphone head stock always reminds me of like a cello headstock or upright bass. Or maybe a G Clef note. It never bothers me, its kind of musical looking. The Gibson headstock is fine but looks sort of angular and rigid.
@altrock866 жыл бұрын
I agree once you see it it can't be unseen. I had an epiphone l.p. maybe 5 years ago, and my buddy was talking about how he didn't like the clipped ear head stock. I had never even noticed. After looking side by side I do find the gibson headstock to be more appealing.

They should have less space between the last string post and the end of the headstock. Should have made the logo smaller and the headstock a bit shorter, right now it looks a bit disproportionate to me. Also please do more videos with your dog in them :)
@baumfr6 жыл бұрын
Should have designed the headstock so the strings go straight, like the 1 and six strings; same for both Gibson and Epiphones.

When I bought my Epiphone, my opinion about the headstock was the same of yours, but just at the beggining, then, with the time, I learn to love it... Currently I love my Epiphone, is just thing of get to use it

Ya I feel the same way about the epiphone headstocks. It’s always been a big turn off for me. It’s pretty sad that those crappy maestros get the nice Gibson headstock and the epis don’t. Great vid!

Once you look past the headstock…. a world of classic instruments that you can own that are A+ quality for the price of a poorly made faded finish Gibson cheap $900-$2000 stripped down you could own a couple / few nice Epi's for the same money. The LP same woods but a thin veneer for the top. So what why hide all that beautiful wood under the surface ? They use a maple cap on mahogany w/a AAAA Top be it Veneer that's ok by me. You could get an SG & maybe even a 335 dot if you find a sale on or a blow out dude I saw the 2013 Gibson line SG LP w/P90 & HB pups get Blowed out for $350 !!!! . All three far better in quality & has the looks & there pups are really good now btw, than the Cheap "Gibson". Which is the better value? After all it was Epiphone that made Les's guitar come to life & made the pickups..because Gibson didn't have it set up yet the 1st Les Paul were partly made & designed at Epiphone they had made pickups for Gibson. I like my Epi's they all stay in tune can't say they for Gibson's I've played.

You'll probably never see this comment, but I have something you may love. A 1986 Epiphone Les Paul. Didn't think it was real, but Gibson confirmed it for me. It is the most insane LP I've ever seen, a single bridge pickup with only a volume knob. Also, more curvature like a Strat. The headstock doesn't have the ears clipped either. Would you like me to make a video and show you?

It's all brand turf protection IMO. And no, you didn't ruin my day. Love my Epi LP. Bought it last year about same time, can't put it down since. I would rather Epiphone offer more choices of finish for lefties than a Gibson headstock. I would jump in a heartbeat on a desert burst.
@promerops6 жыл бұрын
In my oh so humble opinion, I don't see the lack of "ears" as something left off, but rather as something added - a refinement, in fact. Perhaps it's because I dabble in health and safety system auditing, and/or I'm prone to aichmophobia, that I prefer not to see anything sharp (oh, well, there go the SGs, and all florentine cutaways). From the practical, if not aesthetic viewpoint, the PRS headstock, as you have pointed out in the past, Darrell, beats them both. Thanks for the video.
@tsiakkiros6 жыл бұрын
I see everyone in the comment section crowning the Epiphone headstock as the winner for several aesthetic, cosmetic, historical, and playability reasons. I agree. Epiphone for the win. PS: the original Les Paul is an Epiphone. It was designed at Epiphone’s HQ in New York, using Epiphone’s materials, equipment, machinery and general support. The prototypes would take months to make when Les switched from Epiphone to Gibson, so they scraped the Epiphone logo on the headstock and stenciled Gibson. Gibson’s historical claim to the Les Paul guitar is just unacceptable.
@RC32Smiths016 жыл бұрын
I really do love the Epiphone as well, but compared to an LP side by side, that headstock actually does look really lazy, odd one out and missed out design. Still, pretty solid in functionality and playability nevertheless!

I think it has to do with personal experience. When I was a child, one of my brother's friends had a cherry burst epiphone les paul and I envied it (before I even played guitar). I still to this day find the headstock appealing... For those who ALWAYS saw epiphone as a discount brand, the association is different...
@jumbosilverette6 жыл бұрын
You're right -- for lack a better term the epiphone headstock is more feminine; it's also more Italianate and art deco, even. That's why I prefer it to the Gibson. Btw, love the napping dog
@godofthedesecrated74496 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that Darrell. I've never really noticed the headstock differences, ever. Until you "pointed" out the difference I thought it had to do with the bump in the middle being different, Lol. Once I see it's a single cut I don't look too much farther up the neck than to see the brand, which tells me if I can afford to touch it or not, Lol.

didn't epiphone have that design stem from its own jazz semi line etc? By the way epiphone had also other headstocks through the years including the ones on the first batch of epiphone les pauls (with a rounded circular top), similar ones on the elite line, the ones that remind you of casinos etc on les paul anniversary of late and the normal open gibson book in asia. Yeah, in china mic epiphones are sold with the gibson headstock and the epiphone logo is now placed on the orville line in the fujigen factory made in japan guitars domestically speaking.
