I started playing this yesterday and have made great progress. It was like a dream to be playing such a piece in the middle of the night, when the world is asleep. Thank you again for such a beautiful arrangement!

Glad it is giving you pleasure to practise playing it. It is one of my favourites, and it always reminds me of the David Lynch film "Blue Velvet" where it featured in some typically weird David Lynch scenes (music start at about 1 min 20 s but have a look from the start): kzbin.info/www/bejne/baeli6mni9Bghbc

I really enjoyed this arrangement. I don't play piano. When I looked at ordering this tune, most versions of it started at your measure 13. Measures 5 through 12 were not in the publications. Listening to Diana Krall perform this tune, she does measures 5 through 12 and has lyrics to go with these measures. Is this some sort of introduction that is left out in standard stock publications, does this section have a formal name (introduction), and where does someone go to get the complete printed song? I enjoyed your performance very much.
@rupertaustin Жыл бұрын
Nice to hear that you enjoyed this. Probably my favourite song of all time and the first thing I ever uploaded to KZbin. The famous Ketty Lester version from 1961 omitted that lovely introduction section (5 through 12 in my version) that you mention, but Nat King Cole's earlier 1957 version did include it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaqXm3eqa8eefZo And Diana Krall wisely included it also, as you noticed. I seem to recall that section was not notated in any lead sheet that I worked from when writing my arrangement so I figured it out by ear from Kraal's recording. I guess that since Ketty Lester omitted it, that section is not so well known and standard publications of the song don't bother to include it. Shame.

I think this is my favorite at the moment (I like it even more than "Over the Rainbow"). Chords [C13(#11)] in bars 26 and 42 are faboulous. My Lord… But, unfortunately, fingering is not indicated in the sheet music. Despite the fact that in general the piece looks simple, there are problems of fingering, which is puzzling, especially if one try to play legato and hold all long notes in polyphonic moments. I think that fingering in this case is even more important for classical musicians who are used to taking literally what is written in sheet music. And in jazz works, the interpretation may be more free. And fingering could show it. By the way, I'm not sure on audio, in the first bar in the right hand do you really play F natural (half note) as it written, or F# (G♭).
@rupertaustin4 жыл бұрын
Really glad you like this one. Love Letters has always been a favourite song of mine since I first heard it in the David Lynch file "Blue Velvet". I have to admit that the way I have written some of the within-hand voices is not always consistent. Sometimes it literally means hold down the keys for notated duration (eg RH in bar 15, RH in bar 21), sometimes, it means hold down the keys if you have a big hand (eg LH in 2nd half of bar 18, and LH in 2nd half of bar 26), and sometimes it is physically impossible to hold down the keys as notated and it is asking the notes to be sustained by the right pedal (eg LH in first half of bars 17 and 25, LH in bar 42, LH in bar 46). On the whole just remember that this is not Beethoven: what I have recorded is a rough guide, liberties can be taken, notes can be added or removed, tempo can be changed according to your taste, just enjoy building your own interpretation and making it sound beautiful. Regarding first bar, I am pretty sure I played the half-note F natural in RH. If not, it is definitely creates a nice rich sound (9th of the Ebm9 chord) so it is best to include it.
@_sa3_4 жыл бұрын
@@rupertaustin Thanks for the detailed answer. I forgot to say that I first heard this song only recently on your channel (these were the last days when one could download sheet music from your link in GDrive). That is, more recently. Then, of course, I listened to the original classic versions performed by Ketty Lester (including your link to the movie “Blue Velvet”, which you gave before to another person in a comment), Elvis Presley, and also a beautiful orchestral version: watch?v=PN8So88EDUc - About voicing and pedaling I understand. The examples that you gave are not the most difficult to understand and implement. I was more puzzled by fragments like bar 6 (third beat, "D" in RH (half note), which should sound to the end of the bar, but even on the audio one can hear that it ends prematurely, because there should also be a change of the pedal). I found a fingering that helps prolong the sound of this "D", but it is quite specific and not very convenient fingering. But with a little practice, it is quite possible to make it natural. Or legato fragments like 1st voice in RH in bar 4 (B C B G F Es D Es | F). I would like to perform this legato, even if the pedal can help with this. So I made this way (respectively, 1st voice): 4 5 4 3 2 [break, what can I do, but pedal helps] 4 3 4 | 5. - I don't think I'd like to change anything in your arrangement. Harmonies very cool and fat, nice improvisational parts. I just hope that over time, some of the inconvenience of fingering, which I previously chose for myself, will become more natural, so as not to interfere with the process of obtaining pleasure, and not to think about it. I clarified about "F" in the first bar, as it is difficult for me to hear what is actually performed on audio, where this "F" is faintly heard. But even if I didn't hear the audio, I think I would still choose the version written in the sheets, that is, the F natural.
@rupertaustin4 жыл бұрын
@@_sa3_ That fingering for RH in bar 4 looks good. With that you should be able to prolong that D better than I did and without overuse of pedal. Nice! Oh, and look up the Nat King Cole version too. I'm not usually interested or moved by the lyrics of songs, but the lyrics to this one are very touching. For those of us who sent some old fashioned love letters before the days electronic communication, those lyrics bring back lovely old fashioned memories.

Hello. I have a Yamaha N1 too and I have a problem with curves to get full dynamics and nuances. In my opinion, my cheap midi controller captures much more nuances with virtual pianos than N1. Have you such problems?
@rupertaustin6 жыл бұрын
I agree, it is hard to get a a good control of dynamics and nuance when using N1 with a virtual piano. I spent a long time adjusting the velocity curve settings within the Ivory II software, and I am still not particularly happy with the result. The N1 (without virtual piano) is fantastic for general practising though when I can't use my Yamaha C3 for fear of waking my son at night.

I love jazz and this song but with all these overly complicated chords you have lost the original melody.
