The remarkable artistic development of David Hockney, culminating in the work on view in David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition, has been haunted by mortality, beginning with the AIDS crisis. Hockney's creative exuberance and untiring productivity, however, can be viewed as one sustained embrace of life in all its marvel in the face of all that desolation.

Lawrence Weschler is a veteran writer for The New Yorker, author of 15 books, notably Mr Wilson's Cabinet of Wonder, Vermeer in Bosnia, and Everything that Rises: A Book of Convergences, and his latest book Uncanny Valley: Adventures in the Narrative.

this program was on ABC in Sydney, Australia, on 3 01 2016, and it was very informative, sad, vibrant, beautiful, and what a life he's had.He is such a talented artist and how his work came about was also so very fascinating, and It was sad to relive the coming of AIDS in the program, and his losses of his friends, and as a HIV positive man since 1986 myself, I could relate to it..Now I also appreciate his artwork so much more, so "Thank you David" for sharing that with me and whom-ever else watched...I cannot wait to see it for real now...

Never understood this artist until attending the all day de Young seminar November 23 hosted by Hockney scholar Lawrence Weschler and a cast of world renowned illustrators, video, film & technical artists. From these many perspectives it became clear to me that our culture has been receiving is visual input by 'looking through a straw'-- since 1430! This cycloptic view has a reached a point of societal 'stuckness' that Hockney, other artists and technologists are pointing the way through. Thank you de Young for an explosive day of content.

A rather painfully extravagant interpretation of this marvelous work.

For an artist to have such a huge body of work through a period of time and have them all still taken from his studio for this exhibit (that's what i presume), i wonder, does he never sell any of his works?

I've always been a Hockney fan, but I don't buy his assessment of photography, after all you don't normally do a portrait painting in the photo joiner style- you can, but there's no neccessary merit in the technique, in fact in my view these things don't always work. Yes, I think absolutely anything goes but lets be honest all these different ways of interpretation are just as valid as each other and photography is as important as any other depictive method. Dare I say it, but lets be honest, one often needs to come up with some new gimmick or fad just to keep things interesting or 'moving on'.
