The comeback group was supposed to purchase the land together. Because they were struggling with their friendships/marriages etc...the Holts went forth with purchasing the land on their own. And the others felt like it was under handed. This was discussed season 1. When they say the want the Holts to sell out..they are talking about selling the land to the group. But they only want to pay their portion as they would have if it was bought by all of them. The Holts wouldn't profit off the land if they did that. The comeback group properties are being built on the land by the collective. So basically nobody cant do sht without the Holts because they own the land from whence it stands!
