Christopher Reeve got his acting start on LOVE OF LIFE. He played Ben Harper, who was married to Betsy and Arlene at the same time. What a love triangle.
@alexisdiva92 жыл бұрын
When Christopher had the role of Ben, Ben did the bigamy crime. His replacement (Chandler Hill Harben, the final Ben) did the time for the crime - while in prison the other men tried to rape and sodomize him. His mother Meg offered him 500K to marry Betsy which he accepted without disclosing he was already married to Arlene - the 500K in 1974 was probably like $10 million in 2022.

Should have kept this and the Secret Storm going for decades longer, and never produced the more "modern" serials like Young and Restless, Somerset, Bold and Beautiful, etc.

Somerset was NBC, not CBS.

Plus Somerset was cancelled late 1976, early 1977. However, I agree they should have kept LOL much longer and still kept ATWT on.

My mother used to watch this years ago up until CBS moved it to 4 pm channel 2 dropped it here in Detroit in April 1979
@alexisdiva94 жыл бұрын
That was the straw that broke the camel's back regarding LOL! CBS moved the show to 4PM under the pretext of saving it which IMO was BS. Many areas like yours outright dropped LOL altogether then. Others (e.g. WCAU channel 10 - the then CBS affiliate for the Philly area and flagship WCBS channel 2 in NYC still aired it at noon EST until the very end, even though it might have been on a one day delay). Then after all that, CBS in early January 1980 cancelled LOL with 2/1/1980 being the final broadcast date, giving the cast & crew less than a month's notice to frantically update resumes, contact agents, etc. As long time director Larry Auerbach pointed out, a 4PM time would be more suitable for cartoons, reruns and game shows - fare more likely to attract children coming home from school. Another rumored reason for the sudden cancellation was to enable CBS to accommodate the Winter Olympics.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpPOon-Ir5KIh6s Here's a link to the final episode which was broadcast on 2/1/1980. At the end of the episode Walter Cronkite leads on the CBS Evening News a eulogy of LOL. This episode - and several others of the final episodes - were kindly posted by Chandler Hill Harben - the final Ben Harper on LOL.

There are plenty of "Search For Tomorrow" kinescopes and videotapes, at leats of the open & close sequences. But have you considered doing one of that soap (circa 1974-75), just for fun?
@gymnastix13 жыл бұрын
@RabbitEarsRedux Upon further watching (and listening), it is obvious this is Ken Roberts' actual voice-over, and the original audio, that you have merely re-created the visuals. Great job! I wish you would try to do some of these for a classic open & close of "Search For Tomorrow" (using Dwight Wiest's voice-over, if you may find it), a color one is fine, anywhere from 1967-81; and also one for "The Secret Storm" from the 1968-74 era, also with Ken Roberts' v.o.

@RabbitEarsRedux By the way, "RabbitEarsRedux" (Are yu a John Updike fan, too?), did you know Ken Roberts' very last role was as an extra, a bartender in "Brokeback Mountain?" Roberts had a great voice, very enunciative, and very soothing. And Roberts' son, Tony, acted on a few soaps (I forget which ones now?), is best known for being one of Woody Allen's ensemble.

wlbaz The Love of Life opening credits included the book. I'm not sure if the book holds any significant meaning, but since that's how the original credits from the '70s were produced, this clip retains all the elements of the original titles.

Good job with this--and I like it that you used what sounds like Ken Roberts' actual voice-over, and original theme music, too. Is the photo of the flowers in a window sill an actual restoration of the original open & close title/credits image? Or did you use a very similar photo and add your own titles/credits in the same font? In fact, the only thing that has any re-created appearance to this, to my eyes, is the CBS Eye logo.
