Love, Simon: Top 10 Differences Between the Book & Movie // Subscribe: kzbin.info?sub_c...
This movie adaptation was pretty loyal to the book, but there are some differences! For this list, we’re looking at all the ways in which the film adaptation differs from its source material, “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda”. The book’s author has said that it’s faithful to her original story, but we’ll be itemizing both major and minor differences. Because we’ll be delving deep into the story, there will definitely be spoilers!

I adored this book and movie so much! It was so refreshing to finally see a teen movie entirely focused on an LGBT romance, and not simply as a side story, which is common in this genre!😊💟🌈

ULGROTHA Yes, I agree, those groups definitely need more representation. I read a young adult novel recently called "If I was your Girl" by Meredith Russo, who herself is Male to Female Transgender. It took great care to show how Amanda, the protagonist, was defined more as a person, and not as a girl or boy. I'd like to see a film adaptation of that story.

I think the biggest change I didn't like was how meeting Blue was on the ferris wheel, with a lot of people watching them. In the book, they meet in the Tilt A Whirl, which is much more private, and they don't kiss immediately, which gives it a more genuine feeling. Also, the book gives more insight into Bram, revealing that he already had a crush on Simon and dragged Garrett with him to Simon's play all 3 times just to see his crush perform.

Also, the book lacks the whole “you get to exhale” conversation which I think it’s a nice addition. That is one of the most touching parts of the film

The "you get to exhale" conversation and talk with the Dad in the driveway eye both great additions/changes to the movie. Both had me full on crying in the comments both times I have seen it. The movie definitely had more feels to it.

I loved those conversations but they would feel out of place in the book because the book isn’t as dark as the movie, when he is outed in the book it’s shit but his whole life doesn’t fall apart like in the movie so those conversations were probably a little too strong for the book

I think the biggest difference was the big blow up. Like Abby and Nick did not ditch him after he was outed instead they stuck by him and took him to a gay bar. Although I loved the book and the movie it was the one change I wasn't happy about. Just because they were better friends to Simon in the book then in the movie.

The movie took things further in terms of Simon interfering to try to help Martin get Abby (in order to set up the fallout between Simon and his friends), which I think was a mistake. Simon giving Martin tips on how to dress, talk or act was one thing, but for him to outright lie to Nick that Abby has a college student boyfriend, and then to tell Leah to date Nick in order to keep him away from Abby, was manipulative and mean.

There’s an article that explains why they took out the bar scene while interviewing the writers. Also Leah’s family. In the book her dad left her and her mom. In the movie Abby’s dad left and she doesn’t have a brother. Also cal is way more important in the book and is revealed as bisexual and shows interest in Simon.
@Slingblade87
@Slingblade87 6 жыл бұрын
When I was reading the book, I started to really hope Blue was Cal because I thought Cal sounded so cute and dreamy. He was exactly the kind of guy I would have a crush on, too. I was then a little disappointed when Simon asks Blue (in so many words) if he's Cal and Blue says no. But in the movie, Cal has such a small role that I doubt I would've cared if I saw the movie first and didn't know who Blue was going to be. I guess they didn't have a lot of time to spend on Cal because they added a third potential love interest, Lyle (the waffle house waiter).
@TurnerSims3
@TurnerSims3 5 жыл бұрын
Slingblade87 yeah, which is a bummer, because I was really interested in Cal's character and apparent bisexuality. The movie hinted towards it but meh. Plus Miles Is a well-known actor, seems like a waste of a role for him.

Maya Elliott I agree with your statement about Leah. While Abby was understandably mad that Simon wasn't honest with her about Martin blackmailing him and deliberately keeping her away from Nick, Leah just seemed petty,especially the way she easily abandoned one of her best friends, all because Simon didn't (and couldn't) love her back. She came across as more sympathetic in the book.

@andreahenderson9103 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you guys said. They gave Leah essentially nothing to do besides being the friend secretly in love with the guy. They even took the part with her being in the band out of the movie which I thought was the coolest aspect of her character.

as someone who saw the movie first and then read the book, i definitely prefer the book. don’t get me wrong, i still really liked the movie, but the book was way more focused on simon & bram’s relationship, and it felt like when you read the first email shown in the book they’d already been talking for a while. you could really see them falling in love with each other. i feel like in the movie they sent like three emails and simon was already going crazy over him. in the book you can see the progression more clearly, and the book actually continued after they first meet at the carnival. i can respect them as different pieces, but i can tell i would’ve been so disappointed in the movie if i’d read the book first.
@Slingblade87

helmi That's my main criticism of the movie, which I did like, as well. They spent too much time on the blackmail and Martin (who was really annoying, somehow I found him more tolerable in the book) and too little on the email exchanges between Simon and Blue. It's unfortunate, because the crux of the story is really how they fall in love through the emails.

I really like the difference between the movie and the book. the Book felt more like a Love story where the movie felt like a Coming out/Coming of Age movie. Love the book and the movie, but I wasn't a fan of the change they made for how Simon and Blue finally meet. The movie was a little too much Never Been Kissed (also a great movie), I didn't like how they turned it into this spectacle for all the kids at the school to see, I much preferred the private meeting they got to have, it was their own moment not meant for everyone else. Also their first kiss, I liked that in the book it belonged to them, it wasn't for anyone else.

A big one is that in the book, Simon never guessed that Blue was Bram. For most of the book, he thought it was Cal, until he realized it wasn't, then worried to might be Martin, then found out it wasn't, and didn't find out it was Bram until Bram revealed himself. In the movie, Simon first thought it was Bram, then Lyles, then Cal, then realized it was Bram all along once Bram revealed himself. They also left out Taylor Metternich, right?

The movie had a much bigger falling out between Simon and his friends than the book, which in turn meant they had to cut the gay bar scene. There's just no place to fit it in: in the movie, Simon's friends are pissed at him after he's outed, so they wouldn't be taking him to a gay bar. By the time they reconcile, the movie is almost over.

I missed the gay bar scene on the movie. Ultimately I absolutely adore both the book and the movie but I think I like the movie better just because there really is a low point in which everything seems to be breaking apart and ,besides the drama of it all, I think it’s beautiful and really inspiring to see simon overcome that. In the books he never really has any trouble with Nick and the Abbey situation it’s not really that big. But both stories have really inspired me and I just love it

the gay bar was filmed for the movie but cut in the end as the director felt the scene could feel a tad out of place in relation to how the movie was made. since the movie took a different turn he said he felt the gay bar scene was in some way out of place. but the scene was indeed filmed. just cut from the theatrical release.

lyanne OMG!! I’m so hoping they release every deleted scene they might have because I just can’t get enough of this movie. But I think it’s true this particular scene wouldn’t fit in the movie, because if you think about it, where would they have put it? Simon gets out, then he avoids his friends, and then they are already mad at him and don’t make peace til just about the time to meet Blue. Still, I’ve seen the behind the scenes videos here in youtube and there seems to be a couple of scenes that didn’t make it to the final cut and that I would like to see

Simon also has more teachers in the book as well. He takes French but he admits that he isn't good at it. Also, in the book, Simon is shorter and he has blond hair. Cal is more prominent and he comes out as bisexual. Taylor is the huge primadona for the play and the school play is Oliver! not Cabaret. Martin is a tall lanky kid who really has no friends and the movie give the impression that Martin believes he's part of Simon's world again when, in the book, Simon doesn't forgive Martin before the end.

claireice see I dont think he had a crush on Bram, he had mentioned in the book that he was cute and it came up a dew times but it was never a crush, he never even considered Blue to ve Bram because he never pictured it could be someone black, and then he feels like an idiot for not having thought of it.
@alykgray

I was honestly kind of annoyed with that bc he actually thought that bram liked Leah and NEVER expected him to be blue. I also hated that Cal Price was such a minor role bc Simon literally thought it was him for almost the entire book.

Once you've read the book, it's always hard to be satisfied with the movie because you pictured things a certain way and some parts you especially liked in the book don't make it to the big screen. That said, I think Love, Simon is one of the better book-to-movie adaptations. I can think of some changes I wish they hadn't made, but it's pretty solid overall. And God knows it's important to finally, at long last, have a mainstream big studio rom-com that focuses on a gay teen and a same-sex love story.

A friend of mine accidentally came out to me a few months ago, I remember she even apologized to me which made me actually kinda sad since she didn’t do anything wrong. She’s still not openly gay and actually hides books, posts and anything related to the lgbt community from her parents and people at school; I know she feels quite uncomfortable sometimes and it’s seriously so sad. Today was her birthday and also the premiere of the movie in my country so we went together to see it. She cried and felt really happy to finally see a story like this have such an impact. I think movies and series like this need to have more recognition and support since they’re great conversation starters. This is a reality and people need to start letting it sink in. And to anyone out there dealing with this kind of stuff I just want you to know that you’re not alone, the people who love you will understand and be there for you. You don’t need to apologize for being yourself and love is accepted. Being gay or straight, bisexual or asexual doesn’t make you any more or less of a person, we’re the same and if people can’t get that don’t let it affect you.

one of the biggest changes is Bram and Simons first kiss. in the movie they met & kissed on the ferris wheel but in the book they meet on a tilt-a-whirl and kissed a bit later in a publix parking lot (in the rain ;33). the book really made me cry. also lyle isnt even a character in the book. ANOTHER change is Cal's importance. in the book, Simon always thought that Blue was Cal. those are just a few of my favorite changes

I really didn't like that they left out the part of the Elliott t-shirt in the movie; seemed like a vital part to me in the book in which Blue really shows just how much he likes Simon. Additionally, I also really miss that in the book, Blue realised who Simon was without the proof on the Tumblr, and they actually stay in contact, whereas in the movie he sees it on Tumblr and deletes his email-address. Lastly, I kinda hate that they made the whole Blue and Simon finally meeting into such a public spectacle. Made the meeting and kiss seem super awkward and made me really uncomfortable. The book was so much better with them just meeting, just the two of them, and Blue even getting onto a ride that made him nauseated for Simon. I still like the movie, but I am slightly disappointed, because I just completely fell in love with the book. They could've done it more justice.

The way Simon's dad made disparaging comments about gay guys without realizing his son is one was such a realistic and emotional plot point in the book, I wish we could've seen more of it in the movie (and the part where Simon lashes out in anger about it). 2 years late but I’ll shoot anyway. I love both book and the movie. It had different taste. What I just love about the book is that you can feel the connection of Blue and Simon. The movie just showed more about his self-conflict rather than connection he had with Blue. The Elliott Smith shirt was a HUGE opportunity missed. I think Blue giving that shirt to Simon was such a huge step, it showed how he was finally reaching out to Simon after few rejections. It showed he was ready to reveal who he was. The only interaction they had outside the emails. The meeting could have been more private. If I was Blue I would never have the guys to step out when the entire school is looking at us like we’re some show to entertain everyone. What I also love about the book is the built up anticipation and that Blue’s identity remained a mystery till the very end (unless you paid close attention to the details given, like how he had perfect english and Bram getting a high grade in english when Simon took his paper by mistake) In the movie, they could have emphasize more on the email exchange than Simon desperately looking who Blue was. I was also kind of disappointed how they didn’t even emphasize Garrett. He was like the typical jock who host house parties and had the first impression of a bully but for real, he was such a supportive person and didn’t even had an ounce of doubt when Simon came out. When Bram decided to abandoned Simon was also a turn off since Bram was like Simon’s paradise escape but even he turned him down. Regardless, I know the book is more flexible when it come to plot lines and the movie had to adjust in terms of financial aspects (casting. location sites and etc) also, not all audience are book readers so they had go make room for heavy drama that will entice those who haven’t read the book. The book gave me a lighthearted feel meanwhile the movie had the intensity of the characters and brought them to life. Also, well more screen time from Bram 🤧❤️

the ones that have been bugging me when i watch the movie is how Leah loves Simon, how Simon and Blue meet in front of a lot of people and not im private (and the kiss was way too rushed) , also Bram's personality. since i absolutely loves the "i'm quiet around you" i'm one of the cute guys that gets you tongue tied??" "you're _the_ cute guy" part in the novel and it won't work with movie Bram's personality :( other than these, it's a great movie.
