It's taken me nearly a year of following you (I'm slow sometimes) to realize that all those chords they try to teach in "beginning banjo" are about worthless. You set the easiest tuning, and pick individual notes. If I'm missing something, tell me; but this is a frying pan upside the head moment, well needed. Glad I'm sponsoring you on Patreon.

Hey Clifton, what material stings do you use? My banjo is so much more metallic sounding than yours, but I really like your softer sounding strings

I recommend La Bella No. 17 nylon strings for those tuning up to standard pitch. If you use lower tunings then I suggest Aquila Nylgut 5B.

Seems like it's more fitting to sing Soldiers Joy in clawhammer and vice versa Love Somebody in 2-finger.

Will Elliot Whitmore inspired me to buy a Hondo HB 76 starter banjo 10 years ago and it has sat in the case most of those years while I focused on guitar. It’s nothing special beyond some kitschy bicentennial decals. Everyone starts somewhere I suppose. Finding you has me fixing it back up vowing to dive back in. Fellow shovel bum btw, who really appreciates what your doing. Quick question. What were the nylon strings you recommended? Something 17s, but I cant recall.

La Bella No. 17 nylons are the closest thing one can just order in a pack here in the U.S. to what was commercially available roughly 1890-1940.

@@CliftonHicksbanjo honestly it has been awhile. Tough to afford living the transient life style as I got older. Best find was native dog burial with offerings up in New Paltz NY. One of the oldest ever found. Keep up what you are doing. We both know how important it is to preserve the knowledge of our history and it definitely inspires others to dig up and share more.

I have never found a dog. Came down on a Late Woodland burial one time but boss man had me seal it back up. I think they went back later with tribal rep and exhumed that person because the site was looted all to Hell.

@@CliftonHicksbanjo ironically I had a very similar situation with a bundle burial on that same site.

What are those beautiful strings you are using??
@CliftonHicksbanjo3 жыл бұрын
Those are Aquila Nylgut 5B. For people who habitually tune up to standard pitch (gDGBD) I recommend La Bella No. 17 Nylon.
