Why they did that "concert" in the studio was because it was to commemorate the third anniversary of their debut album. So they played the entire album in its entirety. They were already in the studio recording their EP, "Glory Glory to the World". They just wanted to release a "live" show because they missed playing live. Eagle Fly Free was a bonus song exclusive to the DVD.

About the live/not live thing: It depends a bit on what you mean by "live" I guess. Yes it is played live. Yes, what you hear is what you see them playing (you can hear the slight imprecisions sometimes which match what you see their fingers do). No, the sound you hear is probably not the exact sound that was in the room when they played. That is because of course everything was micced and probably got some post-processing. Then again: even if a band uploads a clip from a live show out on stage with crowd and all, that will also get some post processing beforehand. sometimes even additional tracks recorded in the studio afterwards or whatever. except for that though, what you hear is still what was played live. because if you say that isn't live, then nothing you can see on video is, except maybe if it's recorded by someone with a cellphone in the audience and uploaded without touching the files in any way.

Hey David. I'm sure you will get similar responses towards this video. During the pandemic, their 1st album "Awakening from Abyss" turned 3 years old since its release. Because they couldn't play live, the band decided to do this "live" in the studio (which was a live streaming). The band played the entire 1st album live in the studio. Hence, when they release it on DVD, they called "Awake Again: Live at Abyss". They added a bonus song on the video which is the Helloween cover you reacted too. Check out the original song, then listen to Lovebites version again and see which one you like. Cheers!

I downloaded the livestream, which is lucky for me because I missed out on buying the dvd version, which included this extra bonus track that they didn't play during the stream itself. I don't know that you're wrong about it not being live, but it does sound pretty much like the actual live stream sounded (which was live), so I kind of think you're wrong. This is the studio, the mics are fixtures, they might not have all been live, they may have just left them there because that's where they belong, know what I mean? As for the song, it's pretty close to the original. Helloween's a band favourite. Miho has stated that they're the one band all the members are a fan of, and Haruna's cited them as her personal favourite. Helloween are probably Lovebites' biggest influence along with Iron Maiden, and pretty much the originators of the type of Power Metal Lovebites play. I wasn't really a big fan of them either, to be honest. I think they were a lot bigger in Europe than they were here (I'm Canadian) and in the U.S, except in real hardcore metal circles. I don't like Power Metal as a rule, so it's kind of weird that I like Lovebites as much as I do, but life is kind of weird.

As far as I know, almost all music concerts that are released for commercial purposes go through post-production in order to offer a better listening experience. This live studio concert was released as a DVD with a limited edition. I remember two cases when a minor mistake was done and they were not fixed in post-production: one was by Midori, at the end of the last solo of “Epilogue” she unintentionally struck other string (Daughters of the dawn), and in the other case Miyako’s guitar had a string out of tune in the song “Break the wall” (Battle from the east) Once more, thanks for reacting to amazing Lovebites.

Michael Kiske is one of the most iconic metal singers of all time. No one can sing like him. So, any cover of a song sang by him it's gonna sound bad for me. I thought you were a metalhead. How can you not know about Helloween. Maybe you just don't know their work from "back in the day". David, seriously, you would love the 2 classic Helloween albuns from the 80's: "The Keeper of the Seven Keys - Part 1" and "The Keeper of the Seven Keys - Part 2" (this one includes this song). Such amazing solos and melodies! And the fantastic voice of Michael Kiske

Im always the original guy, but this is an excellent cover. When listening to the original recording, you always have to keep 2 things in mind: 1) The record is 33 years old 2) The guys were still pretty young and growing/finding process. Lovebites is a pretty new band, but as far as I know, the members all are experienced and mature musicians. No matter which version you think it`s petter, in any case it`s refreshing to hear it with modern recording quality performed by musicians who dont have to cut edges! Im not a huge Helloween fan, especially not of the famous "Kiske Helloween". For me, the vocals are...difficult. I learned to live with them! But as a bass player, you should really look for more Helloween. I think they are one of the first and one of the best bands in utilizing the bass in its full potential. It plays a prominent role in every song and is far beyong the usual "support role".

After listening this song, I also check out the original song from helloween. That's the pretty great song! But for me.. I'm back again to Lovebites to listening this song. Because for me, Lovebites cover is more sound great from original. Once again, this is just for me. Not say the original is bad, but it just about feel and taste. And by the way, I also like helloween. About this is recorded or live sound? I don't know sure.. But they playing this for live studio version. However 8,6 is still great. I'm personal not problem with that's score. So thank you very much! You has been make a lot reaction from video Lovebites concert .. Now the time you check out they Music Video.. I'm just going to add a clarification as to what is going on with the keyboards in this song (and all of Lovebites live peformances). The reason you hear keyboards when noone is playing the keyboard that is standing there is because they always use a backing track for the "symphonic" keyboard sounds in their live peformances. This is because Miyako isn't the only keyboard player in the band. She plays piano (or piano on a keyboard). The "symphonic" keyboard sounds you hear in their songs are played by a guy called Mao (from the band Light Bringer). He is a studio only member of the band, and doesn't play with them live, so they use backing tracks for his parts.

Great review - never really thought about it before but your comments on the live vs pre-recorded made sense. Thought it was a very fair score, also you acknowledged something I've occasionally wondered - if increased familiarity with the ladies of Lovebites (and of J rock in general) makes the mind blowing scores more difficult to achieve (although the other day Rush scored a 9 so it's not impossible). It only makes sense, the more you expect greatness going in the less shocking it is when achieved. I got a laugh the first time you started gushing about Miho thinking just wait until he gets to the solo - no comment on her outfit though, wearing a business suit over a Metallica T-shirt :) Others have commented on the back story of the performance celebrating the anniversary of their debut album with a live stream, but I think this was also the official debut of Miyako's red flying V (although she had uploaded videos with it on her own channel already) - it's her own custom model from Dean and you can actually order one but I think only in Japan. * Also, Nemophila has a cover of "I Want Out" up on their channel that they posted last Halloween. * sorry if you have a half dozen copies of this comment sitting in a review folder, took me a while to figure out the link to Miyako's guitar on the Dean Japan site was why it kept disappearing

Great song and one that Miho and Haruna actually get some SHINE TIME, how about that, the back bone of the band gets a little spotlight. Song is close to the original EXCEPT it is better!!! I would love to have the ladies take a sample of the great hits from Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer, Metallica, Purple even Sabbath and do an album of covers, that would be stunning. Helloween was a band I liked at the time but there is no comparison with this group of musicians. Honestly, everything they do is flawless BUT I still dig this band LIVE, they are stunning for 90+ minutes just blasting. I bet they leave you with no voice for hours, ringing ears for days and likely a memory that will last a lifetime. I so want to see them LIVE as much as I wanted to see Hendrix when I got back from Nam and was lucky enough to see him again. I only hope we can all return to NORMAL sooner so we can really start to appreciate what LIVE concert are and just how great they are for the band and the crowds. Not sure who misses LIVE show more the musicians or their fans!!!!

I disagree with your assessment regarding the authenticity of this as a live performance. I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt because the monitoring of their microphones can easily be turned off so no bleed over occurs. Asami is using a Shure vocal mic so it will have to be held close as it is not prone to picking up much bleed over from the amplifier cabs. Also, not a single instance of delay in their performance of solos. Just my opine, but I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt.

I agree with The Saturday Morning Cowboys. This is probably genuine live performance. The reason is that the other tracks performed in the relevant live streaming sounded as clear as this eagle fly free track sounds. I think that such other tracks were genuine live performance (David should watch for example Burden of Time performed in the same streaming) and heard by many people at the very moment it was performed and broadcast .

They're pretty much on point! Even the solos are copied from the original. Recommend checking out the Pumpkins United concert from Wacken 2018(i believe?) where the old line-up has joined the new. Though all of the guys are +55 they sound awesome! Michael Kiske was among the best vocalists... and he hadn't turned 20!! ...and was considered as a replacement for Bruce Dickinson when he took a break from Iron Maiden. When he did this and I want out, who are both from "Keeper of the seven keys II"which by many are considered the breakthrough for Powermetal as genre. From the concert i mentioned i recommend the title song from the "KOTSK II" album. It's like this rollercoaster ride and their "EPIC" so to speak.

Halloween have 3 guitars so the piano being played is for the third guitar actually. Halloween is actually Haruna's favorite band so that's why they performed a Halloween song during this concert. This would be from the DVD/BD so it would at least be remixed from the master if not like you said re-recorded instead of the raw of the stream.

Just my two cents, I think this is live. This song sounds like the rest of the session, so whatever they did on this they did on the whole concert. I thought the overall sound from this session was OK, not great. The overall sound of the instruments and vocal sounds a bit thin and stale. The background sounds a bit boomy and slightly dirty, which has been covered up by plenty of reverb. If I had to venture a guess, I would say their using some major sound cancelation software on these live casts. A lot of those microphones placed around the periphery of the room may not be there to add room sound. They might be there to subtract room sound and crosstalk. I think Nemophila has done the same sort of setup for their frequent live casts. In their case it appears they have set up their practice studio for the live casts. Unlucky Morpheus on the other hand has been shooting their web videos with dubbed audio. (and they make no claim they are playing live) I would be curious to know what bands are using now for live cast work. It seems they can get a lot cleaner live in studio sound these days.

I was a big Helloween fan back in the day and Haruna is a huge fan. You can hear lots of their influences on various songs and I hear just as much Helloween influence as Iron Maiden/Judas Priest in their stuff. I'll try to find it but somebody did a mash up of this with an old Helloween video. They are very true to the song as all have said. Their own stuff is better, I'm with you, but this is a great nod to their heros. All that bass stuff is straight from the Helloween version. Someone linked the Pumpkins United video. How many times has a old band had all 3 of the lead singers put their egos aside and do a shared performance for the fans. Found that mash up... kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqekk4SKn8ScaNk

I think that you should put your eye (or ears?) to helloween band. Their bassist Martin Grosskompf was and still is a very original musician and you can clearly hear each of his bass lines in their songs. I heard Helloween in 80-s and after 30 years of listening to all types of heavy music I still cannot find any other band in power metal or speed metal who do the bass as Helloween did (and does). The only comparison is Steve Harris from Iron Maiden. But they play their own IronMaiden style. While Helloween is the godfather of what we know now as speed metal. It's very logical from Love bites to contribute to the band that had such a big impact on the music style they play. Listen to the 1st and 2nd Helloween albums, even though this particular song is taken from "Keeper of the 7 keys" dilogy where the band turned to a more commercially polished sound. And by the way, 'I want out" - the only song you heard on Head banger Ball is a very good song, but it represents the vocal range and ability of Michael Kiske who is also a legend and still sounds as good as in youth being 50+ years old now. But from the instrumentalist point of view first 2 Helloween albums were a breakthrough.

Congratulations for remembering the names of the band members. Question, and I'm genuinely curious, albeit clueless, about this. You said that this couldn't possibly be a live performance, due to how clean the sound was, and that makes perfect sense to me. But is it possible that the speakers weren't connected for this performance, and the ladies were only hearing each other through their in-ear monitors?
@THEDavidHeretic
@THEDavidHeretic 3 жыл бұрын
No what I meant was they were probably playing it live, so they could all play it together...and then later in post production they removed the audio from the live performance and overlayed the studio recording synced to the video. This is a very common thing to do for music videos, and it's actually really easy to do as long as the band is playing to a click and the time stamps line up.

@alekhidell 3 жыл бұрын
@@THEDavidHeretic can you be a bit clearer for us non musicians. Are you saying that the recording of what we see them playing is synced later, or a DIFFERENT audio recording is synced later? Because to my eyes and ears, what I SEE being played (particularly by Haruna, for obvious reasons) is what I HEAR being played.
@THEDavidHeretic

@@alekhidell What you're hearing is a studio recording that was probably recorded earlier, like what appeared on an album. Then they film themselves playing the song live to a click that is at the exact same speed as the studio recording. Later they remove the audio from the live video, and replace it with the studio recording. Since both were at the exact same speed, it synchs up perfectly. The only trick is lining up the audio with the video, but if you have the proper markers and timestamps it's really easy to do. Lot's of bands do it, it gives a live video a very clean and polished sound with no mic hiss or background feed interference.

Hi David and thx for this reaction, awesome as always! But... ^^ Why reacting to a cover without hearing the original first ? You should for your next reaction to a cover ;-) Anyway, ok with everything you said, but at 19:08 you say you did not see Miho doing tapping before, but you did, on the Holy War reaction (one handed, do you remember ? ;-) ) Cheers from France ! :-)

Great and honest reaction as always. It's weird, Helloween are one of my favorite metal bands of all time, especially as my favorite sub-genre in metal is power metal and yet I completely agree this is one of Lovebites weakest songs despite being a great cover. Not saying one band is greater than the other (i'm not into "console wars" anymore, too "old" for that, what is great is great, we can be fans of lots of bands and other things without degrading some to elevate others) but just thought I'd point that out. I think it's on the queue already but I have a feeling you'll love "Break the Wall"(Live from Zepp DiverCity, Tokyo)

This was NOT postproduced. This was taken from a live stream they did a few months back to celebrate the release of their first album, and they played this song live. Just like you see it (and hear it) here. This recording is taken directly from the stream, no post production whatsoever.

I haven't heard them before. But great musicians. But I kind of think it was real live sound. Especially the song sounded a bit muted, like going through a low-pass filter. Probably because of cancelation of room echos etc. Anyway - if you liked the bass tapping, it's time to spend some quality time checking Charles Berthoud's YT channel.

I've tried and tried and tried to like Asami's vocals, but I just can't get into her. As talented as she obviously is, her voice is just very "blah" to my ears. They are a very talented band as a whole though.

She's from R&B and Jazz singer. When Lovebites was formed, Asami asked to Miho about changing her voice to make it more "metal". Then Miho said "no need", it gave a unique voice. Btw she also sounds different when singing in Japanese. Check this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoe2mKyOhcuiZ9k kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH64qmOmrbminpY

Ok, let the rant begin. Such a shame you did not check out the original. I am confused as to why because with your musical ability and talent it would of made a better reaction and review video and not spoilt any impression of Lovebites and their version of the song. Here is the link to the Helloween version, please listen it when you can: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIbPZ5uGeL50rMU Out of preference, I prefer the Helloween version as it is a song written and performed by them and does not have the strings that Lovebites added. As soon as I heard the strings on my first watch of this 'live' performance, I knew what was going on. You have taken the time to explain it and unfortunately as you have expressed, there are too many people who do not understand this, even Lovebites fans.
