Met Anthony and Rob at my middle school in South Pasadena when I was 13, so it waaaas 1998. They rolled up in the Alien workshop van. Rob was trying to hit this rail for what had to be hours. Anthony didn't skate, he said he was resting from hitting some bump in the street all day. So, I got to sit and talk to my favorite skater in the world at the time. I don't think I ever told him that I loved his style more than anyone else. There was something so raw and loud to it... vs the super clean look it seemed everyone else was going for. I got both of their signatures on the shirt I was wearing. Had it on the wall for the next years. I moved to Colorado and one day I found out Jason Dill was at my local shop. I brought the shirt and he recognized both of the signatures and got super hyped up. This was all too perfect for me at 15, mind blown. Jason broke his hand and it was in a cast, his signature ended up being huge and janky ( laughing about it as I write :) and I thanked him a few times and left. Long story short my mom washed the shirt when I left home a year or so later at 16. And then life happened to me and I lost the shirt. Oh well, Anthony Van Engelen was the value behind it all. the end.

Every episode... skateboarding is such a beast with so many different perspectives and influences. Every kid who picked up a board has connected with something they've seen or been influenced by. I love skateboarding and that love will never die. Keep telling the stories Jeff. You're one of my earliest influences. I rode you board for years in my younger days and your part of my life. ❤

I absolutely love this episode, as AVE is the same age group as I am, so all the videos he mentions and that "bearing cover" wheel talk just hits home hard. :) And I was just literally thinking about the early 90s, how sick the progression was. Awesome time for sure, even though there was the not-so-awesome things as well, but yeah...

jarkokoo Same generation here too (I’m 41). It really was insane to see things go from Ban This to Virtual Reality in 4 years. Fascinating, really. I feel like skateboarding has barely changed in the last 10 years except for how insanely good everyone is and that it’s way more diverse and inclusive.

I had a pair of purple Fuct pants and a set of Gullwing trucks that I believe were 113's. Me and my friend found a bunch of motors mounted to this crazy pipe frame outside a sketchy Chinese restaurant. We went back in the middle of the night and took a bunch of the motors and one of them fit wheels on it perfectly. We stole a plug from the local Ace, wired it up (the motor was 220 so we blew the fuse in his garage all the time) and started grinding down wheels. The best were old Powell wheels. So much of the urethane at that time was complete shit. I took an old set of red G-Bones and shaved them down, the best wheels ever! We never wore masks and I can still remember the smell of burning urethane. Good times! Thanks for bringing back such great memories! I'm glad I didn't have to buy wheels during this era as there was an unlimited supply of old wheels from everyone we knew that either quit or didn't want their big old one-sided wheels. I wish I could skate those reshaped G-Bones now, seriously so good!

I remember in 94 when the Love Park dudes like Fred Gall, Matt Reason and Ricky Oyola all hit and they rode (what seemed like) huge wheels. Their wheels were probably 45-50mm at the most, but they really stood out. Those dudes were ahead of the curve and helped us get out of the small wheel rut.
