I always remember him bumping into me at Angel's costume shop in Shaftesbury Avenue, he said "sorry sir" I replied "that's fine, carry on Sergeant Major" . He burst into laughter. What a gent.

I met him a few times on the London Underground. First time, I was sitting opposite him. I looked over, recognised him immediately, smiled and nodded at him. He smiled back, and just said EVENING. I could see that he'd had a couple. Next time, I think we just recognised each other, and I said EVENING to him, and we just exchanged pleasantries. I could sense there was no ego to him. The thing that stood out was he smiled at everybody, and everybody reacted to him. I bet he was a brilliant bloke, and would be fun to have a pint with.

Thanks Stu, great tribute to a great comedy actor. He used to live near me in Carshalton in the 80s. I often shout 'lovely boy' in a Windsor Davies accent to my teenage son's, who in turn think I'm mad. I'd like to watch some of the old 'ain't arf hot mum's episodes.

This has just brought a fully grown man to tears. "I didn't expect that to happen" I feel very fortunate to have grown up in the era before political correctness destroyed everything wholesome. While I accept changes possibly did need be made, things have just gone to the other extreme these days. Yes we mocked other nationalities and religions, but we mocked ourselves just as much, and that makes me very proud to be British. we are able to see our own flaws, and make fun of them. As a nation though we have forgotten how to laugh at ourselves,as we have been beaten down for decades now by this PC crap. I feel ashamed of my generation,at 52 I feel that I have not done enough to stop this hideous regime infiltrating the younger generations. Watching this inspirational man, that brought me so much laughter during my formative years, has made me realise that i don't really look up to anyone these days. I think we all need a hero in our lives. I am going to consciously make more of an effort, and hopefully reverse this horrible situation that has become accepted as progress.

The fact is mate, Generations change. I'm sure the Generation before Windsor hated the idea of their comedy dying out. As a 22 year old I can safely say comedy IS still alive, you just need to look for it. Doug Stanhope, Patrice O'Niel still have very active viewers, alibet Patrice is dead. You won't reverse anything, and the fact you are viewing generational changes as "Good" or "Bad" is wrong. There's no good or bad, there's just "Different time periods". Baring in mind, back in those days, being racist was completely fine and was apart of society. Women were done as they were told and their main prospects in life were hopefully being married to a wealthy man that could take care of them. Homosexuality was buried so deep, it seemed non existent (It wasn't). Comedy reflects the society of which we live in. We no longer live in a racist, sexist, homophobic society. Isn't that a good thing? To me, shows like Ain't half hot, Dad's Army, Only Fools, Porridge are relics of the past, and should be enjoyed as such. It must be scary, and honestly quite frightening to see everything you knew as a child dying out from society. But rest assured, I, My children, and my childrens children will be in the same position as you, asking the same questions. And one day, most likely, Even I, as Left wing as I am, will be viewed as "Right Wing". As a great man once said, "Oh dear, How sad, Never Mind".

A funny man. A clever man. A memorable man. A memorable voice. From a time when comedy on television was actually funny because it was allowed to be funny. He was a 'lovely boy' (or maybe that really should be 'lovely boyo') himself. I also really enjoyed the series of Never The Twain but of course Windsor will be best remembered for his brilliance in It Ain't Half Hot Mum. Whilst the two Carry On films in which he appeared may not be the best of them, they were all the better for his being in them, for sure.
