I wore NOTHING BUT LOLITA for middle school and got terribly bullied, so I gave into fear and stopped for high school. I may have looked like everyone else in high school but that didn't make me friends, it didn't stop me from getting picked on all it did was make me depressed because I was wearing fashion that I didn't feel pretty in. I didn't feel like my true self therefore I couldn't BE my true self. When I got married at 19 my husband came across Lolita fashion and bought me a dress. This made me confess to him that I used to wear this fashion ALL the time and that I missed it. SO I BOUIGHT LOLITA AGAIN. I'm 31 years old today as I write this, I have a 10 year old daughter, I'm a teacher and I have been wearing lolita fashion ATLEAST 4 TIMES A WEEK even to the grocery store, walking the dog, parent meet ups ect. I get weird looks, some ppl don't want to be near me but MOST PEOPLE LOVE THAT I LOOK PRETTY. 90% of the time I'm complemented and maybe asked why I'm wearing a wig or a "fancy outfit" I have had a few close friends confess to me that my being "dressed up" makes them feel terrible about themselves and their own appearance. Basically that sums up the whole being scared to wear a fashion that you love because you are aging. I struggled with this a few years back when I wore nothing but Sweet Lolita I am 4 foot 11 and because of health issues I look like Tinkerbell. When I wear Sweet I look like my daughters sister and can get the free meals from the kiddy menu. This bothered me ALOT in 2019. I hit a low point I felt like I was failing my daughter by wearing Sweet everywhere and being mistaking for a child. But I LOVED WEARING PINK. So once again I stopped wearing something to please another and once again I fell into depression. Long story short I had to deal with being a mom and wearing the fashion and I did. It took my daughter asking me to twin Sweet Lolita with her to an art gallery to realize I was being STUPID. I love wearing Sweet, my kid doesn't care if I do, my husband loves me no matter what I wear so why was I so concerned about what people outside of my close knit group felt? Wear what makes you feel happy in. (As long as you wear something!) in the end your mental health is more important than other peoples thoughts of you. Also, I bet you look amazing in your coords.

My "dream dresses" don't really exist. Like I see dresses that are cute and I like, but I don't feel the burning need to own them really. Most things that I *do* feel like that for don't exist, so I'm working on making my own prints so I can make them myself! Though I hope lily of the valley does do the rerelease of the unicorn forest dress she mentioned a while ago!

Same here, I was a teenie-weenie 14yr-old when I started searching for lacy/longer skirts and found lolita.. But the cupcake shape never really tugged on my heartstrings... There are definitely some darker or Victorian-ish lolita pieces I would wear proudly but I'm definitely not lolita myself.. Still, I like Lor and people who talk passionately about their interests, that's why I keep coming back xD

I'm going to school to be a fashion historian and I've always viewed history as a puzzle, so it's super important for me to get all the pieces, and as we all know there's nothing like a primary source. Our clothes show us who we are, and I think even subcultures are going to be so important to understanding our world someday. Plus there's something just...so tangible about clothes. You feel a connection be it the piece is centuries old or just a few hours. There's something special about those divers and the work that goes into putting it all together.

I actually ordered my first Lolita Dress and it was my dream dress. It came in this week and honestly I couldn't be more in love with a dress that I am with mine. It's called Forest Deer Lolita Set Overall Dress by To Alice. I ordered the blouse, shoes and head scarf hood as well because I was obsessed with the whole coord. Just gotta say, that wig is PERFECT with Otome Nostalgia! I love how you paired the pink OP with the red bow. It's such a versatile print~ Dream dresses are so complicated for me rofl. My younger self and my current self aren't so different but I'm less optimistic about fit/making something work than I was back then, and what I like looking at is sometimes different from what I enjoy wearing. I've always wanted Milky Planet, but I would buy BtSSB's Secret Garden set before it because I'd wear it more, even though I have more sweet accessories. Your "guidelines" are super helpful too. It's important to contextualize why you want something, how you'd wear it, and whether your desire for it now is just due to nostalgia or like, fashion adrenaline lol. No shame in admitting that a dream dress isn't what you expected either! Side note but the AIM sounds as transitions are sending me straight back to my teen years, thank you.

Congrats on leaving FB. I did that this year, too. Also I'm glad others do Lolita clown looks. I've been a professional clown since 2006 and I use a lot of Lolita pieces and elements in my costumes. Even my pirate costume that I made is from a Lolita pattern. It works well because a lot of people are afraid of clowns so I figured Lolita was less threatening.

Most of the dresses I've come across that might've been dream dress material for me, aren't made in plus sizes or don't go big enough for me, so there's not much point in wanting them! Because I basically can only get custom sized dresses, I don't really feel like I can participate in the culture of dream dresses which is kind of a bummer. But in some ways it feels nice to not have a dress to pine over, makes the fashion more chill to me! Mine was sugary carnival jsk in sax, loved it dreamt about owning it for so long and then i forgot about it because i haven't worn lolita in over two years, and started getting back into it, as soon as i saw the re-release MTO, it sparked the same love i had for the dress so took the plunge and bought it.

Such a great topic to look at! I have gotten most of my longtime dream dresses in the last 2 years because I now have a full time job and can afford them. (And I'm also out there every day dream dress hunting for myself and others) Some of those dresses I have sold because of the fit, but most of them I still own and love. The dresses I wanted and didn't end up getting are mostly dresses that are too short for me or without adjustable straps, or dresses that I ended up getting something else too similar instead.I don't have any dream dresses at the moment, I still have a wishlist but nothing I'm absolutely obsessed with.
