Thanks for the lesson! After watching the video 3-4 times, I was able to mount and set up a 12 speed Shimano SLX/XT system on my bike .I also found out that the 12s chain is very narrow and it doesn't fit a shimano crank for 11s if you don't change the chainring with one for 12s. The installation became perfect!

I own a 2009 Giant Trance X with 3x9 Shimano XT drive train. I haven't ridden In 10 years ( I had 3 kids, now they're older and I have more time for me again and my son wants to RIDE 😊 ), I use to race XXC. I went to ride the other day and the rear derailleur was broke, went to buy one and NOPE they don't make them anymore and I could only find used parts. I switched over to Shimano 12 speed last summer. I have always liked shimano and now the bikes that live at my house are all compatible which makes the spare parts inventory simpler. Great video and thanks.

This was helpful. I just installed a M8100 1x drivetrain on my Tallboy V4. Shifter indexing is always tricky for me, but after some back and forth I got it to work (at least on the stand). A video on troubleshooting indexing issues would be really useful. In my case I re-did all my steps from cable attachment, to the limit and B-gap screws and then re-did the indexing process two times. I eventually got it working correctly. Hopefully once I get the bike out on the trails it shifts as good as in the repair stand. The other thing I think some people are not aware of is that the end caps, aka ferrules, need to be put on correctly and very firmly. There will be some natural housing compression that occurs after use, so indexing might need to be fine tuned after a ride or two. Another tip, for full suspension, cut the chain with 7 extra links to start. Then see if you need to reduce it more. Once you cut, you can't go back and lengthen. In my case, the 7 links was too long and ended up cutting again to get to 5 links which was perfect.

Thanks for the video! when i installed the cassette the first time, it was weird because the lock ring was "over rolling", but the process was correct and the cassette was firm, but i almost didn't even tighten it so i was "mmmm this isn't safe" ahahaha. At the end, i guess repeating the process i was able to put the cogs and the spaces correctly.

For anyone following this tutorial: Check that you have the correct type of derailleur hanger. There are two different standards and only one works. Specifically you need a standard mount hanger, NOT a direct mount hanger. Direct mount hangers are an older Shimano standard and not every bike mechanic knows about it. However in case yours is direct mount, you can usually just buy a correct hanger, even for bikes that are a few years old.

One gotcha which would really help us is to clarify on close ups the alignment of the 12s Shimano cassette as I do feel that there is a slight sprocket raise on the last (smallest) cog if one looks at the cassette from the side (not top) even if one follows the markings. I ignored this and assumed it is by design. @sickbiker attempted the video but did not touch on this point. Did you notice this too?

@@LoveMTB Just wanted to say big thanks! Used the video as a guide as promised and yup I had a few misses with my XT setup: - clutch was too hard resisting the shifting once the clutch is engaged. Problem started once I engaged clutch 2 months after setup (I am so clueless 😐 😅) - slowest chainwheel was not aligned. Adjusted b-gap screw and al was golden - adjusted cable tension again - the cogs where setup correctly though, I was looking in on the last cog from the hyperglide grooves which confused me duh! 🤓🙈 All working and shifting beautifully now on both my XT 8100 and SLX 7100 wheelset setup. Thanks a bunch and keep doing what you do for diy MTB mechanic enthusiasts giving the complex world of bike components setup. 👍🏾💯

I have many Schwinns. I have a Schwinn Black Phantom tandem that I welded and painted on my patio. Schwinn never made one but I did in 1997. I am building two new frames, a 26” bmx Schwinn Scrambler and a 29” wheel hard tail Schwinn Scrambler adventure for bike packing. Right now I have a 2020 Schwinn Boundary and I think I will do the entire Deore 12 speed group set with a Wren suspension fork. Thanks for the video.

Very well explained. I ve also noticed a delay in downshift from larger cogs. Also i have a Xcm X12 chain and is not very friendly with the hyperglide function. It does fine with climbing but it spring over many tooths when downshifting from larger cogs. I believe the X shapes of the chain cause that. I would recomend others to stick with the Shimano chain if they fully wanna benefit from Hyperglide. Other then that, great video, keep doing the good job!

Thanks for the helpful video! I noticed at 11:20 that you're using the ferrule with tongue at the derailleur end of the housing. It wasn't clear to me from the shifter dealer's manual whether to use the ferrule with or without the tongue. Can you tell me your reasoning for your choice? Thanks!

Actually that's not the endcap with a tongue, that is only for bikes that do not use continuous housing. Check out my video on the XTR derailleur for more on that little anti friction tongue, used as a "hack" on XT - kzbin.info/www/bejne/paexdKyBfLCArM0

I have one (hopefully) last question - would it be a mistake to use the endcap with tongue instead of the little anti-friction tongue in that spot? The XT shifter I bought came with a couple of the endcaps with tongue, so I'd prefer to use that instead of separately purchasing the anti-friction tongue.

Hello again! I've found that shifting to the lower gears becomes faster if you use parktool's method for setting the b-gap (i.e. with a 4mm hex key between the tooth and the pulley wheel). The tip on chain rubbing is really helpful!
