For type 2 diabetics like me, keto has been a godsend. Before keto, I was on up to 120 units of Lantus insulin a day, I was seriously overweight, and my kidney function was declining, putting me on a path to be on dialysis in 18 months. After going on keto, I lost weight so that 3 years later, I'm down 65 lbs, back to a weight I hadn't seen since my 20s (I'm 75). My blood sugar also fell and I started coming off insulin. Now I haven't been on insulin for 2 years and my last a1c was 5.6. My kidney numbers also improved, and I'm no longer in danger of going on dialysis. For me, carbs are like nicotine from smoking - they're extremely addictive, but deadly. I had to quit "cold turkey" and commit to not being tempted to eat them any more. Fortunately, my wife is an excellent cook, and makes delicious keto meals every day, so it isn't difficult to stay on this diet. She specializes in international cuisine, making Italian, Mexican, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, and Middle Eastern dishes, among others, so a keto diet doesn't have to be boring at all.

@@nickjohnson811 You will have to stay keto though. As not ingesting carbs only covers the cause of diabetes type 2. The fat inside the muscle cells that cause insulin resistance itself (intramyocellular lipids) that interfere with opening the glucose transporter. If you do not ingest sugar, then insulin resistance won't matter. However, that is the actual cause. You are only treating symptoms right now.

To lose weight most people do not need to be on 20 grams or less a day. Many will get great responses from less than 100 grams per day. The real key to the weight loss is not the total daily amount but how much you are eating every meal. So if most people can stay below 10% carbohydrates per meal they will get spectacular results.

Now, I'm not massively obese, but chunky. Went on medicine to control my appetite. Didn't eat any junk food. Started a ketogenic diet of high fat, no carbs, moderate protein. 3 weeks into it: Constant lethargy-gone Inability to focus-gone Acne-clearing up (fucking 40 with acne) Energy-restored Inability to sleep at night-gone Inability to wake up in the morning-gone, get up without alarm and exercise Suicidal depression-gone Inability to break my weightless plataue for 6 months, broken Hunger-ok, I still get hungry but not like I use to. LOL. I will never go back to carb eating again. No pasta taste as good as I feel. I'm not saying this is the cure for everybody, I'm saying this worked for me.

@C K I have been on a carb restricted diet for 18 months now and and it is not what the naysayers say it is. It can be if you do it wrong, but the biggest restriction in my diet is processed carbs. Stop eating processed foods and your carb intake will drop dramatically. So no flour products, and wheat and oatmeal no sugar and that includes soft drinks and juice, smoothies, cut out white rice and wash/rinse rice well before cooking, cut out ALL vegetable oils and margarine (olive oil is not a vegetable oil, it comes from a fruit whilst vegetable oils are actually seed oils and your body does not like them. If can't cut them all out long term at least restrict them dramatically. My consumption of fat and protein has only increased marginally and this is because I don't eat as much as I used to, but I eat when I am hungry, Processed Carbs (sugars) are .addictive and the more you eat the more you want. My weight has dropped and it was all fat and some water retention that is gone and the IBS I had a bit of is gone along with a reduction in skin irritation. You can loose weight faster by cutting back on the higher carb veg and replacing them with more and more green leafy veg. Reduce the high carb and high sugar fruits and eat more berries. Once you are at your target weight you can eat more carbs, just not the processed ones. The key to any diet is to get a good range of needed fats, mineral vitamins from real food. Vegan, vego or omnivore it doesn't matter as much as getting the whole range. It is harder as a Veg to get the saturated fats you need, but not impossible.

I found that really difficult and couldn't keep it up, making one meal for myself and something else for the family, no low carb options on daytrips, not wanting to offend hosts by rejecting their cooking, few options in restaurants, feeling sick of salad and fish or salad and steak or just plain salad... Long-term I struggled with it but it definitely did work in terms of rapid weight loss and improved energy levels, fewer hunger pangs. My daughter likes to bake and cook fancy recipes and my husband eats bread daily. On my own it would have been easier.

Richard Bernstein acquired type 1 diabetes (T1D) when he was about age 12 in about 1947. For 20 years, he followed the instructions prescribed by the American Diabetes Association, and he got a lot of serious health problems because of it. So, he used his engineering degree and a blood glucose meter to figure out how to stabilize his blood glucose. He reversed all but 3 health problems. Those 3 problems had gone on so long that they had caused permanent damage. Then, Bernstein became a medical doctor and specializes in treating T1D and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Bernstein is in his 80s and still practicing. For eats and adviizes his patients to eat only 30 grams of carbs per day. So, keto is good for type 1 diabetes, too.

After a year of strict ketosis I’ve reverted back to baking sourdough bread and eating three or four slices a week. I think you’ll find that most people that eat keto for a long period are able to eat various carbs at various times but still mainly keep very low carb for good. And that’s the whole point get healthy and stay healthy. I never have the desire to snack and on the holidays I may indulge in some sweets. But instead of having two or three donuts I’ll have half a doughnut. Or a small piece of cake or half a cup of ice cream doesn’t matter, Life goes on. My family on both sides are diabetic. I was prediabetic I am not anymore. Had high blood pressure ( 150/90 ) not anymore ( 110/65 ). Lost 35 pounds and 5 inches off my waist. I had acid reflux for decades not anymore. Went from 6.1 H1C to 5.2. I’m 68 and I am not on any medications and don’t plan to be. Another added benefit, short term memory loss that started in my 50s has now reversed. Because I’ve been doing this so long my body has become fat adapted, which means it understands that fat and carbs can both be used as fuel. So if I eat a sandwich one day and go out of ketosis I can go right back in by the next day or two By limiting my carbs and increasing my fat. So if anyone thinks I reverted back to the way I was eating before you are most definitely wrong. I will eat this way the rest of my life And have my cake and keto too.

I agree, had a similar journey. Started out with strict keto, then gradually went up slightly in carbohydrates (with veggies, not garbage.) Weight dropped in the beginning, then a plateau for 2 years. So easy to manage. No more acid reflux, no more inflammation, better sleep, better energy level throughout the day. Occasionally eat a bit of hummus or beans, but don't cheat big because I don't feel the need to. Suits me fine and going to LC/HF with 5x wk exercise made me feel great. Don't plan to change it. Don't even look twice at sugary treats- plenty of keto options to satiate the sweet tooth.

I agree... but those of us who are carb addicts really need to be careful. But I totally agree, if you completely never allow yourself a treat, a trauma or an event can happen where you'll just think "i just don't care im gonna eat whatever" and that mindset can go from one cheat snack to a 1 month binge. For me, I have to be really strong. Im trying keto/low carb again this year. 2021 and hope to do better than I did in 2019 when I first started it. Im Hispanic who loves her flour tortillas, rice and beans. The other day I took a quarter piece of tortilla and a spoonful of rice and beans and that calmed my craving. Id like to lose 15 lbs, hope I can make it stick this time around. But yeah, if you fall off the again for one day, just fast the next day and reboot the following day. Falling off doesn't mean you can't ever get back on.

@@texastea5686 I hear you! I love tortillas also, and I try to remind myself and think 'big picture' about my health when I get cravings. I think of my former 225 Triglyceride level, and I'm snapped back to reality (which results in being more steadfast.) I think about the impact of my making poor "small" choices and how those can add up, little by little, over a year. It boils down to making new habits, which honestly took me a long time to change. (Good read: Atomic Habits.) Over time, the new habits took over, and once the grip of tasty carbs and sugar left my body, it got easier. Make no mistake, it's a constant state of awareness, but does get easier over time. Just set your goals and play whatever mental games work for you to eat smarter. Not easy, but doable! Best of luck Texas, Tea!

3 years ago I was 320 lbs. Went Keto and Intermittent fasting. I prefer to workout while 14 to 18 hours into my fast. I was on 5 medications today I don't even take an aspirin at 195 lbs with 12% fat. When building muscle I prefer to do 16/8 intermittent fasting with the odd OMAD. My body prefers 20/4 or 22/2. Dr. Berg, Dr. Berry, Dr. Fung & Thomas Delauer videos saved my life. Sugar is the enemy not good fats, such as saturated, mono and polyunsaturated. Healthy keto with a large salad rocks with my carbohydrates in my last meal. Intermittent fasting makes life so easy, your gut health heals with good fermented vegetables like sauerkraut. Break your fast with easy protein like bone broths with coconut oil. Good luck, the 1st month is tough especially stabilizing your electrolytes and minerals so read up on it, salt isn't bad for you. After 4 to 6 weeks the hunger abates and it's like being reborn! Good luck.

After that week it didn’t take long for my body to adapt to fatty foods like eggs and avocado and eat once a day around 1200-1500… I shed 60lbs in less than 6 months and I don’t look or feel fat anymore. Please go and read academic papers on this issue. Tell me if carbs store as fat why are tonnes of people who eat carbs lean as anything? What do you do on a keto diet when your weight loss stalls? You can't just cut out carbs because you're already not consuming them. Did you know protein has a large insulinomic effect as well? Also by your logic, if carbs make you fat then wouldn't you eventually die on keto if you did it the rest of your life as you'd just continually lose weight? Here's a hint, calories matter and carbs don't make you fat. Unless you're telling me you could eat 10,000 calories a day of fat and not get fat?

I've been on a sustainable low, carb routine since 2019. So far it's been working like a charm 👌 I do around 15 to 20 hours of endurance exercise (Kayaking, jogging, and weight lifting) per week and have achieved healthy yet sustainable BMI, and body fat percentage figures. By the way, my testosterone level has constantly increased since 2019, when I measured it first. Now at 41, my testosterone level is in the 95 percentile of men in their early 20s in the normal range. My recommendation is to: Listen carefully and closely to your body and its signals & Do NOT follow the majority, as they are often wrong about most issues. Update (a month later): for the first time in the past 10 years, the "visceral fat" index went as low as 4% (the healthy range is between 2-12%), while the overall body fat percentage remained in the athletic zone of 12.8%. The average visceral fat among the US population is 10-11%. Good luck fellas 👊👊

Cravings I usually don't have (it happened once when I didn't have lunch and did a lot of sport the whole day). I still have to get rid of 7 kilos, but I am confident.

Thats why High Fructose Corn Syrup which literally sugar poison that spike insulin are available in almost all processed food in US. Not to mention heavy subsidy for farmer to grow corn and wheat not rear cow or lamb or sheep. Not to mention the GMO seeds that only can be used once from Monsanto. A corrupt company. Carbs aren't our enemy. They are primary energy source as they fuel your everyday activities. I can't really imagine my life without carbs haha :D. The thing is, you don't have to be low on carbs to lose fat. It's all about consuming less calories than you spend in certain time period. Balanced diet that I'm still following works best for me (even though I found it online, on a website called Dietarizee). I also have cheat meals included. What more you could ask for :D Good luck!!

What works for you may not work for someone else. Just like explained in the video, carbs are a lot like dairy in the sense that some people process them well, and some don’t. This makes sense if you think that most sources of carbs are processed foods or grains that did not exist in the wild before domestication by early farmers, meaning that some cultures didn’t really have access to these until later in our evolutionary path. That explains why dairy, gluten and carbs are a problem for some people more than others. Then again, not everyone needs to follow the same diet to be healthy, but trying a low carb diet should be encouraged for anyone who suffers from obesity, diabetes, ibm, etc. Speaking for myself, I have struggled with digestive problems my entire life and have been overweight for the past 10 years, but recently lost 25kg through intermitent fasting and low carb diet, my digestive problems disappeared and I feel so much better in general

I started to know about low carb after my dad got diabetes 1 year ago. He is in south China rural area where people ate a lot of white rice and some vegetables. Because meat is expensive, people don't eat that much, but only occasionally. My parents are the same. I think this is how my dad got diabetes, and many other people in the village. Started to do some research to help my dad and found out low card diet. Recommended this to my dad, and now he is controlling his diabetes much better and cutting some medicines. It's hard to convince him since many doctors still insist that you have to eat rice or some kind of carbs. I myself been in low carb for 4 months now, lost some weight easily, feel really good. Also convinced my boyfriend to quit sugar and join me with the low carb. I think we should share our experience and spread this message to more people. I wish I know this earlier , then I would suggest my dad to cut some rice and sugary cookies and he probably won't get diabetes/high blood pressure.

From Nov to April 2020 I cut out as much Hi carb foods as much as possible, rice, lollies, noddles, root veges, high sugar soft drinks, and by April my weight had dropped down to below 85kgs, while still eating as much protein as possible, any meat mainly chicken and pork was still consumed. Zhichao Hong Who said anything about Ketosis? I eat a high PROTEIN, low carb diet, lost 50 pounds in 6 to 9 months and have kept it off without exercise for almost 2 years. Drastically reduce carbs and lose the weight and feel great.

I always laughed when doctors told me I'm going to have a heart attack on low carb because of all the eggs and meat. But it's sugar that caused high cholesterol not fat or protein. You don't eat a drumstick and it goes straight to your heart. That's a myth. It's the sugar that turns to fat that goes to your heart! And it's plaque that makes it worse and some say bacterias.

This makes me angry, I've been lied to my entire life about what food is healthy when literally the opposite is true!

if you eat once a day be sure you are getting the calories of a full day (over 1500 to 2000 calories), that is about three full meals at once. Otherwise don't do it. If you eat a normal meal once a day you will be severely caloric deficient and your body will react by lowering your metabolic rate, and that's not what you want if you are looking for permanent weight loss. Caloric deficit is common mistake that people make when they think about dieting to lose weight (eating less, being hungry) and that's also the primary reason they yo-yo in their weight loss (regaining the weight immediately after finishing the diet)

I lost 70+lbs in a series of months, felt amazing! Blood pressure normalized, energy through the roof, not depressed at all. The biggest mistake was letting the holidays get to me but I never put the weight back on. Getting back to it though for the energy and anti-depression benefits.

It does work. I was never able to diet before, because I was always hungry and craving all kinds of foods and I'd eventually fall of the wagon because of anxiety. A few years back I did keto and lost 60lbs in 6 months, I had never felt so good in my life... emotionally, and physically. And I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything when it came to food. After the first 20 days or so I no longer craved sweets or carbs. This a diet you can maintain, like being vegetarian or vegan, is a style of living more than a diet.
