The Su-35 engages air, ground threats & counteracts enemy naval surface forces. Russia’s preferred air superiority tool until the fifth-generation Su-57 is developed. A pair of Su-35s recently dropped unguided bombs, reportedly near Kreminna (Luhansk). GSH-30-1 30MM autocannon (150 rounds); 17,630 pounds of payload on 12 external points. i think they are called Tilt-ups, and they are useful as they allow for flying low below RADARS and pod weapons like this are cheap and Russian probably has an endless supply of them from the cold war. Useful for mass bombardment. Requires precise flying and release.

@@FerNando-ys5hc well yeah. tilt ups are to avoid larger air defenses with RADAR systems. I have seen videos of American volunteers talking about MANPADS. They have suggested that Russian helicopters have pods attached on both sides that can disrupt the missile as it cruises towards the target. To Get around this they fire 2-3 MANPADS simultaneously to overwhelm the tracking and disruption. The way it was described is the missile gets confused - veers of target and exploded midair. This is very interesting to me. I suppose future designs will build in 3 or 4 EW devices to help track and disrupt more MANPAD missiles. More EW pods will make it prohibitively difficult to use MANPADS - though they can certainly still be used in larger volume. The US is now designing Stealth Rotary aircraft. But, I have to wonder if that is the most cost effective option. Stealth has certainly not proven to be cheap and distributed RADAR arrays have become increasingly good at defeating it. China is working on miniaturizing RADAR tech - the trick seems to be having an effective algorithm to strip out the noise.

Fantastic aircraft. For it's day it was outstanding and state-of-the-art. It is still a formidable aircraft with huge offensive power. Maybe not quite as good as a F-35 but pretty close and certainly an aircraft to be feared. One question though is why do they use it to bomb civilian houses, schools and hospitals when Ukraine uses 1,000 Euro drones to take out IFVs ?

Not all their bombers are equipped for it but the EW was built in to these fighters. Yeah it's risky but what is more valuable, the pilot or the aircraft?
