I am a massive fan of “NIN” and I noticed that they had an artist playlist called “recommended listening,” I listened to all of the songs, most were really good and had excellent aspects. When I heard this, I was blown away. It’s not about a fantastical groove or a wicked guitar solo, it’s goose bumps and how touching the song is. Thank you Trent.

This song, which was played during the last scene in "The Night Comes for Us." so hit. Actually, the meaning of the lyrics is ironic. The lyrics is explaining that we commit murder in the name of God. A kind of justification for how evil we are. The point is fit to this film, killing each other without feeling guilty, even to kill criminals brutally.

Strange that so many miss the meaning of this song: it's a religious fanatic who is about to commit some horrible atrocity "in the name of God" -- we all know several who have claimed to do so, from more than one religion -- lone wolves or whole governments. (one can be religious, as Alan and Mimi are, and still be highly critical of religion's use or misuse, etc.)
@Diplipito8 жыл бұрын
You are right. The song starts with "One more thing before I go", this is the key.

For what its worth, in a live recording from 2012 I have, Alan says "This song is about countries that cheer when they've assassinated people."
@tmt66912 жыл бұрын
Alan Sparkhaw mentioned once in a concert in Mexico (Nrmal 2016) that the song was about "something" that happened in Mexico. I dare say it was about the "Cristeros" war, one of the bloodiest episodes in Mexican history. The government prohibited the Catholic religion because it took a lot of money from the people and had a powerful opinion in the country's policymaking. Then closed churches and enforced hard punishments for those against the new rule. Cristeros refers to Christ, and it was an army made of common people, priests and all those who tried to protect their religious practices (and benefits). An yes, there were mad people who believed they were doing the job of God. In fact, there are some Mexican saints that achieved such status because they fought that war. But again, that's only what I think the song is about.
