I love all these videos. One quick question, though: at 16:45, when that capacitor blocks the low frequency signals, what happens to them when they are blocked? Are they just attenuated, then pass through to the output? Or are they going down through the resistor to ground? I want to know if I've got this right, because the attenuated signal also becomes a higher frequency signal, no? I just want to know what happens to the low frequency signals once they hit that capacitor. Thanks for all this excellent content.

So regardless of whether we are building a high pass or low pass filter, we have the choice of using either RC or RL circuits. But why/when would we choose RL over RC? For me, RC is easier because I have a wide range of capacitors, but I don't keep inductors on hand. But it would be good to know if inductors offer any advantage.
@alexstone691
@alexstone691 3 жыл бұрын
Im no expert but inductors would probably be a better idea for higher currents also easier to make higher values than capacitors

How do RC and RL filters function? How do capacitors and inductors drop ac voltages in filters? To understand this intuitively it is useful to know what is a fringe field of capacitors and what its effect is at different frequencies. With inductors, it is useful to know the induced field and its effects at different frequencies. These effects influence the net field and current magnitudes in capacitors snd inductors. Knowing this will help in understanding the operation of RL and RC circuits as filters. Attenuation, it should be understood, denotes a decrease of the amplitude, or magnitude of coherentbor incoherent electromagnetic waves or electrical impulses without specifying what quantity should be used to measure the decrease, whether the decrease should be space-dependent, time-dependent or both, the cause of the decrease or, the conditions under which the decrease is tho be measured. A resistor can produce attenuation but it need not be there always to produce attenuation. Lossless lines and T-section and m-derived section filters can attenuate signals as well. Electrostatics and circuits belong to one science not two. To learn the operation of circuits, Current and the conduction process, resistors, capacitors and inductors and how discussing these topics with a unified approach makes it easier to understand phase-shifting in capacitive and inductive circuits, watch these two videos i. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHbWiJeabJukrsU and ii. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnO0fpKurJeFnNE The last frame References in video #1 lists two textbooks 3 and 4 with topics that discuss the operation of capacitors and inductors. Textbook 4 in addition includes discussions on phase-shifting with a unified approach to electrostatics and circuits useful to understand how filters function.

@2:50 you state that capacitive reactance is equal to one over two pie f c... What is the order of operations for that? One divided by two times three point one four times f times c? Or is f and c one thing? Like "fc"? I think it stands for the value at which the frequency is cutoff by three decibels. Or do you multiply the FC by 6.28 and then divide one by THAT? I'm just trying to figure out what I'm cutting out of my amplifiers circuitry so that I can order the components at the correct values for my circuit to sound pleasing to the ear. When I plug in the numbers for a ten k resistor and a 47 nF cap I get 737,900. Now what frequency is that supposed to be? 737,900hZ? I am told these values are used in audio circuits so I'm trying to calculate who's writing wreaks of shit and who has the readers best interests in mind. I appreciate your work, I am still not achieving certainty that my goals are going to be accomplished by plugging in these numbers in this order. Oh, is R² supposed to be resistance? Is that the total resistance or just the one before the capacitor? Thank you for your time, Scott
