Seeing these familiar, nostalgic low-poly landscapes set to ambience definitely evokes some comforting childhood memories. To us 90's kids, getting to explore 3D worlds was an entirely new and mind-blowing experience. The N64 was my first 3D console, and I'd often just wander around and chill out in various spots in the worlds of my favorite games, taking in the scenery. Exploring Timber's island by land, air and sea felt almost like being on a solo vacation far away.

It was truly magical. Me and my friend would do the same; we'd just fly over the island and appreciate the scenery and music. Still remember getting this game for christmas. I could open one present in the morning and I knew which one to pick. The box art alone was awesome to look at.

You nailed it; for me it was the same except I'd endlessly explore the open world stages in Sonic Adventure, wander around FPS games or play with the various stage editor tools that came with some RTS games. I've thought about this a good bit - how we love looking back on the comfort of our first consoles and game experiences. No doubting it was a simpler time, and that some of the older games were masterpieces. I love looking back on the Christmas where I got Starfox and Diddy Kong Racing and played them for many hours straight (not caring that I had no memory card and would just start over from scratch each time). I do think, though, that a big part of these feelings is that we were young and everything was so new and fresh. As we get older, things become jaded, including ourselves. There are still good games out there, games that can bring comfort and new experiences. Times do change, but we also change. Nothing wrong with nostalgia; it is one of my favorite emotions. But we can still make great memories with friends, games, life, etc. and there are still many good, fresh, new things in this world, digital and otherwise.

this makes me nostalgic for low poly worlds like this, where there was always something that required a skill jump or some other method of movement to get to. You HAD to master movement in the game to the point of the engines near limit to achieve. the first sight of it at the beginning of the game trying for hours to get to, and couldn't, only to find out you had to learn to slide jump or power boost off of something to get to it, and having to go back to do it, or even better, having to go back after unlocking an ability to be able to jump or power to the reward. whether that be a portal to a world or a skill reward or something. Spyro always comes to mind with needing near perfect pixel jumps to get to some hidden rewards to 100%. Home worlds need to make a comeback

As an adult, thinking about game worlds has become more fun than actually playing them. The exception that proves the rule is teamwork-based multiplayer games and the incredibly rare singleplayer game that grips me. Even so, no singleplayer game has ever gripped me from beginning to end - there are always gaps of days or weeks or months between play sessions. The real world and its transcendent origins are much more interesting to me now than the virtual world. This is no doubt because I finally have freedom of movement, and of course because reality matters more than the virtual.

wow there was something really beautiful about this comment. Please post more reflections on this train of thought. I would love to incorporate it into future episodes of Firewalker
@KnoxEmDown3 ай бұрын
@@firewalker3289 Apologies for taking so long to comment, but I'll write more on the topic as you wish! The virtual world has this tremendous sense of otherness, yet not a foreign otherness, but an inviting, comfortable one. It is a world within our world, a sub-creation, and therefore even with all its strangeness it retains that inherent spark of transcendent reality - even though it, as a matter of fact, is a facsimile. This is most apparent in virtual worlds made with a genuine appreciation for our reality, facsimiles that possess what some would call "soul". This "soulfulness" is the true measure of a virtual world, as a reflection of the real world's Holy Spirit, who is everywhere present and fills all things. The very best virtual worlds are flattering imitations of God's Creation, our reality, imbued with the personalities of the artists and programmers who made it, filled with their ideas of fun and what they find fascinating. It is not just a world, but THEIR world, inseparable from themselves and the real world no matter how outlandish it appears on the surface. We can only imagine so much and so far before inevitably returning to what we can comprehend in our finite reason. All this is to say that virtual worlds are not superior to the Creation they imitate, but rather complementary, sub-conscious commentaries on the Creation according to the developers - and more consciously, they're made to have fun and make money, of course! This is why I say that reality matters more than the virtual, for reality itself contains the entirety of the virtual. Why allow yourself to be wholly consumed by a facsimile, when there's an entire expanse of existence to explore, one which is transcendently connected to one even higher than itself? There are those who claim that Creation is a prison and nothing more, a place merely to be escaped. They are wrong; It is a playground, a gym, a battlefield - in short, it's all things needed to attain salvation and learn to co-participate with your Creator in the most godly act of all - creating things out of love. Agapic love, especially. When people make virtual worlds, do they do so to imprison those who enter them? Unfortunately, yes, some do. Yet those false worlds always lack something, the spark that separates "soulful" games from the "soulless". They lack love, and no matter what addictive ploys they put to try and snare poor souls into their virtual worlds, this lovelessness is always apparent. This is not so with virtual worlds made in love, nor with our reality, which is so filled with love even in its brokenness that it cannot be ignored. Heaven is not just the hereafter; It is here and now, it condescends to us and connects to us in this reality. In the same way we condescend to a virtual world because we love participating in it, so too do the Divine Energies of God condescend to reality as we know it. There is more subtlety, God does not waltz around making Gmod rocket bathtubs, yet nevertheless, He is present and actively intervenes in human history out of love for us, His Creation. So whenever I see a lovingly crafted virtual world, I can't help but wonder at the influences the creators had - what led them to make their design choices and their aesthetic. All created things are a reflection of their creator. As transcendent reality is the biggest, most beautiful Creation I can participate in right now - containing the numerous virtual worlds that reflect their author's experience and love - I know reality matters more, and participate in it.
