@@dimitrijekrstic7567 it's definitely at least a bit because of the internet. In the early days of blogging there were loads of teenagers oblivious to the fact that everybody that age is insecure and emotional all the time. It wasn't until we got actual social media like Facebook and MySpace that people began to realise and it took them years. At least now we know it's cliche, or as the kids would say "cringe" and we can make fun of people who say things like this.

Strange how this is what Stephen Fry copes with - that is, depression and suicidal thoughts (even though he's a celebrity, some might think). This sketch is him making light of that. Come to think of it, a lot of ABOFAL sketches are about Stephen airing issues out (such as homophobia in the "acts of lesboid love" sketch).
@fingerboxes3 жыл бұрын
As someone with bipolar: it's how we cope. I've been living with bipolar since I was 4 years old, maybe younger. To survive it you have to learn to laugh in its stupid face. I think sometimes people don't believe me when I talk about my life because my affect doesn't match the words but it's not because I don't feel the emotions I should, it's because I choose to ignore how I feel. I treat myself as a different entity from how I feel. Sometimes I refer to the split as logic brain and emotion brain. Emotions brain controls the ship's rudders but logic brain controls the anchor. That's not to say it's an issue of mind over matter: it absolutely isn't and logic brain can very easily lose its compass, and when that happens it's no help at all--it stops you in the wrong place or doesn't stop when it needs to. Meds help with that. But when you routinely completely flip your priorities, your desires, and sometimes even your beliefs overnight, you've got to learn to not invest attention in that if you want to have anything resembling a stable life. Someone who I deeply care about has bipolar and every time he hits a manic phase, he dumps whoever he was dating, defaults on his rent/living conditions/debts, flies to Israel, and ignores everything except prayer and studying scriptures. Rebuilding from that is a mess every time plus by the time he wants to rebuild he's depressed, making everything that much harder. When I'm manic, I get hyper-religiosity but the religious beliefs I hold are completely influenced by whatever the temporal lobe epilepsy style hallucination I had was. It's extremely disruptive.
