I would Love to see Pine Island! Also do you ever take any of the sea grasses and use them for decorating? And if so do you have to clean it?
@SWFBeachLife2 жыл бұрын
I do not take sea grasses, however I did find a sea whip and I took that to display amongst my other sea treasures. I don't think the grasses would hold their color, but I could always grab a bit (as long as there wasn't anything living in them) and see what happens ☺️
@karenturnbo68702 жыл бұрын
@@SWFBeachLife I can see that. It would be interesting to see if it would work though. 😁
@Gasp70002 жыл бұрын
Karen Turnbo & SWS : I think sea grasses can be preserved in glycerine. These are some shell deodorizing and plant preservation methods I figured out myself and others I’m mulling over: There are plant preservation methods using glycerine. Sometimes a little dye is added to enliven the color as the glycerine preservation can sometimes darken them a little. How to videos are here and there on eHow and youtube, etc. Autumn leaves are often preserved this way and it makes them stay soft, so I thought it might help bivalve shell “hinges” stay soft and flexible. Also, orange oil spritzed from orange peelings works to neutralize the fishy smell of shells. I put orange peelings or oil in my shell bags for travel-on dry shells inside nylon* bags, as nylon bags don’t allow odors through them. When I unpack my bags, my suitcases still smell fine. I used vacuum compression bags sold for clothes and bedding that you buy in the travel section in stores, but Amazon sells some called “Smelly Proof”. I think I’ll experiment with liquid chromium, too, as far as fish smell neutralizing, since chrome or stainless steel also are known to fishermen and chefs for neutralizing their hands after handling fish. People rub their hands on the kitchen tap or a large serving spoon and the smell is gone, or those “stainless steel soap bars” you can buy. They work, but you can’t rub a shell on it, lol. I figured liquid chromium supplement in water might make s spray that’d work. With the orange oil, I have never had to used any other soap or chlorine or boiling or anything at all on my shells, and that’s in all the shelling trips I’ve gone on in the last 7 years. I can tell you this, though, years ago in the Philippines when I was there for 18 months, I didn’t know about the orange oil, which I thought of myself after many year. In the Philippine Islands, I boiled and boiled snd boiled my shells and bleached them to no avail. They still smelled, and yet there was nothing live in them, so it was frustrating. I’m glad I have an answer now! And interestingly, it barely takes any at all, just make sure the shells are dry before putting them in the nylon bag. The first ones I used were huge, about 2’ x 3’, but I just filled the bottom, spritzed in the orange oil and closed them up for a few days. They can sit like that for weeks. But beware, DON’T leave whole fresh orange peels in there for longer than a couple days-they can mold your your whole bag! If you can find pure orange oil, you can mixed it with water, glcerin, mineral oil, ir leave straight, and put it on a cotton ball in there, or spray it from the can straight orange oil sometimes comes in as air freshener, which in that, there are no other ingredients added. I think with the sea grasses, it might also be possible to dilute the glycerine in water and water the roots in a jar for a few days and the glycerine is just fed in internally. I heard about that years ago but haven’t found specific instructions lately. I may put all of these tips on a web page but I’m not set up yet. But you’re welcome to share these ideas. -Marianne Sites, Blazin’

@@karenturnbo6870 : I have to say, too, I was pretty undone when I received a shipment of shells from a business in the Philippines and opebed my package to the smell of gasoline! They used it to “deodorize”!?? Anyway, I used orange oil on those, too, because it just so happens that orange oil neutralized gasoline and diesel fuel smells, which is why I keep oranges or orange oil with me when I go to pump fuel! I do wonder if other citrus peel oils will work, like lime, lemon, kumquat, calamanci or grapefruit. I do know that grapefruit interferes with certain prescription medicines, so a person would have be cautious not to get it in the blood stream through the skin.

Shell at 8:50 is mauve mouthed drill, and you are correct about channeled duck clam at 20:16. IF wentletraps were present the spot to look is the coffee grinds past the dead trees, visible at about 5:53 - 6:10, at that spot shift from Sanibel stoop (walking) to low gear, ( i.e. the Sanibel crawl or the Sanibel sit)......get close to the sand! as Susan Barkley noted a few comments below!

I need to pick up about 100 more drills before I can tell them apart. But I know once I crack the secret I'll never forget. At least I know those ribbed cantharus shells so I can exclude those 😅 I have been lucky with the wentletraps lately - of course just not on the day I went to go find them. Next time. She finds the wentletraps near to the lighthouse. She even goes digging in shell piles to find them. Maybe this is helpful for you? But I really love the shells you found today! Especially that red and yellow Calico Scallop and that white Lace Murex. Seeing that sting ray was amazing! What a beautiful creature. I was surprised to see so many people on the beach so early in the morning. That will never happen here in the Netherlands, not even when it's beautiful, warm weather. Here, people arrive around 10 am. But we don't have beaches filled with amazing shells to search for. I really hope and wish you have a wonderful week, filled with sunshine and amazing finds! Big hug and lots of love, xoxo ❤️, Ilona Ps: I'm not so interested in that boat ride around Sanibel. Love the beach walks a lot more. 😉

My dear Netherlands friend....Sanibel is a very, very popular island - and rightfully so. It's truly a special place and it's so beautiful. That being said, everyone wants to experience it and on a low-tide early morning in March/April, the beach is going to be crowded. I'm looking forward to having my empty beaches again! When I put out a video that isn't a beach walk, I tend to do those during the week as not to disappoint my viewers that want their beach time on Sunday. I was thinking of maybe doing the tour and explaining what you'd see if you did go to Pine Island. There is ZERO beach, but that's probably why the land is still there. All the mangrove trees help keep the sand in place. I hope you have a lovely week! ❤️❤️❤️

I live in a small town east of Toronto on Lake Ontario. The only shell we have is the nasty Zebra Mussel, which I collect to make flowers for my wreaths. We don't get vert much garbage washing up, but a surprising number of shot gun shell casings (I guess from shooting ducks). Thanks as always for your videos - they are, in my opinion, the best.

I found all 8 of my Wentletraps by scooping thru the shallow break line, exactly like what you were in at 22 min. The water was a bit murky, so the scoop helped. I knew there were shells there, but couldn't make them out. Anywhere a bunch of tinies are, you are bound to find those lovely little traps. Especially where the "Coffee Grounds" can be found. I am never able to JUST SEE the traps rolling in the water. I was JUST there on March 26th, at sunset, for only 2 hours, and lucky enough to find my first traps!

Then you don't like Pine Island - biggest island with no beaches!
@SaltyReflections2 жыл бұрын
As soon as you outlined that stingray, I immediately hoped you were doing the stingray shuffle. Then you mentioned it a few seconds later. 😀 Totally agree - looks like an injured/healed or deformed channeled duck clam, matches the interior apex shape perfectly. Of course, I love the beach as much as anybody but I'm the kinda girl that will say yes to most any opportunity that gets me out on the water so that's a big YEHBUDI from me on the thriller tour! Enjoyed the great finds as usual!

I'm always creeping around in the water but that's only the second stingray I've seen. The cowrose rays are just gorgeous when 100's of them "swim" by. I know you share my beach passion!!! I hope you guys have good crabbing and shelling luck in the future!!! 🦀🐚

If it was a shelling Mecca, I would have been there a bunch of times by now. Believe it or not, there is no beach there! Biggest island and no beach or shells. Go figure!

I've been watching your videos for about a month now since I booked a trip to Sanibel the 1st of August. So excited to come to the beach and look for shells. Love your videos!! I'll be staying at the Sanibel Inn and can't wait to get down to the beach.

I hope you have the best time ever! The shells are going to be in the water in August, so plan on feeling around with your feet and perhaps snorkeling for those beauties!

Hello! I love watching your weekly shelling. I do have a question. I just came back from the Sanibel and fort Myers area on Saturday. The tide table I used was not correct. Every time I went shelling when it was suppose to be low tide, it was actually high tide. What tide table do you rely on for your shelling? Oh, and my son wanted you to know that he found an albino lightning welk. He watches your videos and was stoked to find it on Tigertail Beach on Thursday washed up on the beach.
@SWFBeachLife2 жыл бұрын
An albino lightning whelk?? That's awesome! They're so beautiful. Ok, for the tides I use an app. I show you which app and how to use it in a previous video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZzTiXibmrpskLc I use that app to plan which beaches/areas I want to visit and I can also keep an eye on the tide while I'm out there. I hope it helps!!

Thanks for letting me live my life on the beach thru you. I pulled my box of shells down and pretended I had sand underfoot again. Absolutely love Sanibel, always stay at Blue Dolphin or Mitchell's Sand Castle. I went last September and hope I can start getting there more often but, traveling from Ohio and the gas price😔
@SWFBeachLife2 жыл бұрын
Ugh on the gas prices - I know. Well, I can get you to the beach each week. I'm sorry you can't put your feet in the sand but I hope it ties you over until you can come back here for yourself!

Oh wonderful beach and critters that white bird was so pretty up close silky looking feathers such a beautiful day very much enjoyed this one! Would love to see more of the other islands an any boat ride would be so cool a total plus!! I think the sea grass and keply stuff rinsed, dried and added to a compost is good for your garden right?

The sea grass may very well be good for the garden. I hadn't thought of that!

Thank you for leaving a comment and letting me know! The Sanibel Thriller will not be a shell tour - if you want one of those check out tours to Cayo Costa or the 10K islands. Those islands tend to have some decent shells!

Thanks for sharing thanks for the timeline about the tide and my question is every sorry about your watch when it gets wet I hope it works after it dries off how easy to walk on the beach
@SWFBeachLife2 жыл бұрын
My watch is a FitBit and it's waterproof so I don't need to worry about it getting wet. The beach over at Sanibel Lighthouse is easy to walk. Very hard packed sand so you won't sink so much as you're walking along if you stay close to the water.

Hi Sharmon. I'm from SC and came down to Sanibel for 2wks during New Years Holiday. Went to many of the beaches but my favorite was Blind Pass , Allison Hagerup and Kice Island. Who am I kidding, I loved them all! I have watched you shell since the beginning. Can't wait for my Sunday evening fix!! I also remember that traffic well. Took 3 days to realize you have be on the beach before the rooster crows, lol! Love your videos.
@SWFBeachLife2 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, some of us shellers are quite determined. I'm convinced you have to pitch a tent and sleep on the beach to get there first - LOL! It sounds like you hit quite a few awesome beaches down here. I hope you found bunches of great souvenirs. Thank you so much for watching my channel and coming along with me on my beach walks!

⚘ New subscriber here. I live in east, central Illinois. I used to come down to the Sanibel, Manasota Key or Marco island area's a couple times a year. I absolutely love it down there. I always said I will retire down there. May 1, 2022 is my retirement date. I've been looking in several areas, but an area I've not visited yet, but want to, is Crystal River on towards Clearwater. Have you been up that way? I have seen the Thriller boat circle Sanibel and thought about getting on for a ride, but never have. I would love to see your viewpoint on the boat ride. I usually took the boat, out of Sanibel Harbor, the Stars and Stripes. The captain was always so kind and knowledgeable. Love watching your video's. ❤⚘❤⚘❤⚘❤⚘❤
@SWFBeachLife2 жыл бұрын
I have not been up to the Clearwater area but I would love to! Crystal Springs is on my list of must-do things here in Florida. I'll get there eventually. And someone else had mentioned the Stars and Stripes boat ride. I've never taken a boat ride that wasn't headed to an island for shelling so it will be interesting to see what all the trip would provide. I guess I'll find out! Thanks for subscribing - I share a new beach walk video every Sunday ☺️
@vickiequick44692 жыл бұрын
@@SWFBeachLife the Stars and Stripes is a smaller, personalized trip. The captain would get us all included in the hunt for dolphins. I caught a delphine giving birth, so we circled around, but kept our distance, and wztched for a few moments. One other time I thought I saw stepping stones on the ocean floor, but the captain asked me where I saw it and turned around. He explained it was stingrays resting on the ocean floor. Our captain was always so patient and knowledgeable. Thank you for bringing back all these great memories. With this pandemic winding down, I hope to get back down to beautiful Florida. ♡⚘

I can’t wait….I get to spend a week at the beach again on north Captiva. I’ve always been an avid sheller but am getting there so late this year I’m wondering if there will be much. As far as Pine Island I’ve always wanted to stop and explore Matalacha. (Sorry about the spelling)
@SWFBeachLife2 жыл бұрын
I've been to Matlache twice. It's a quirky little place and you can tell it's old. Everything sits right on top of the road so it's tricky getting around on foot. If I do end up passing through again I'll be sure to video some and share!
