very interesting experiment going on with u o g. however mr.kelly i am seeing an unusual site in the distant background with a colony that is at least 17 boxes tall. uncommon in any of your yards and definitely someone has to stand in the back of your yard truck to stack them. any comment?
@elizabeththefirst59603 жыл бұрын
Paul's comment on the inverse relation between colony aggression and varroa load is addressed in a BMC Genomics "The transcriptomic signature of low aggression in honey bees resembles a response to infection". As a beekeeper, this conclusion concerns me a lot. I've fought with Russian honey bees for a few years. Though great honey producers and low varroa infestations, they made beekeeping so unpleasant I went back to Carniolans and Italians and chemicals. I continue to have hope varroa will be eradicated and pesticides eliminated.. oh yeah and climate change addressed. Godspeed.

Well produced as usually. Is there any consideration being given for small cell or natural sized bees within this study? Shorter gestation periods are always brought up as a great defense mechanism. The bee keeping industry artificially increased the size of honeys bees most likely lengthening that period. Would love to see such a highly experienced and reputable organization such as the educators running this channel explore that. It seems like the low hanging fruit in this mite equation. Thanks again for all the great vids!

Really exciting project! Any concern about the bees w/high varroa mites counts crossing w/nearby wild hives? Also, I’m really eager to see how keepers can apply this
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer. Yes I do have concerns about the presence of undesirable genetics within our mating area. Over time we will not keep the HVG lines going. Breeding in both directions( HVG and LVG) gives us a quicker way to see if our selection process is working.
@johnfleming78792 жыл бұрын
Higher defensive nature may be due to Africanized bees.It is my understanding that they resist varroa well.I also saw a show a few days ago that indicates some of our favorite traits may be recessive
@learonne33793 жыл бұрын
Does breeding for gentle bees reduce their ability to defend their hive against other invasions like wasps? I'm relatively new to this and though I like the idea of working my hives with no protection I also have a large number of yellow jackets that I try to control but the hives still need to protect themselves from them.

Were any of the colonies treated for mites at any time prior to the study? Results suggest these characteristics are carried at least in part by the queens. Any thoughts on contribution by drones? Thanks for sharing these results!

Dones only carry their parent-queen's genes, so their contribution IS a queen's.

whats the reasoning you aren't using the harbo assay to test hygenic bwhavior and your using the kill brood test. these are different traits. It seems harbo figured all this stuff out already. have you looked at his research? Are you looking for different traits or looking for tolerance instead of resistance?

I counted 16 honey supers for that hive in the background. LOL. It's likely that's not a prank. A hive like that hive must have bees using propolis to glue the boxes. Otherwise empty boxes stacking that high will stand little chance with the winds. I think this UoG folks low key showing off their honey yield. It's literally: See, we know our shit.
