An overview of options for prescribing low vision reading glasses. This list is not meant to be comprehensive, but represents the most common categories of low vision reading glasses that I prescribe for low vision patients to read hands-free.

It was brought to my attention that I need to distinguish between "Near Telescopic" and "Galilean/Expanded-Field Telescopic." Great point! I should have added "Spiral" to the latter, and to further distinguish the two categories, I am considering "Near Telescopic" to include low-powered (1.7X - 2.5X), wider-angle Galilean systems such as demonstrated in the video. The Spiral "Galilean/Expanded-Field Telescopic" category includes the higher-powered (3X - 8X) Galilean and Keplerian systems produced most notably by Designs for Vision, Inc. --Dr. Long

I prescribe and recommend what is simplest and meets a patient's goals most effectively. Sometimes it is a simple, inexpensive -- even non-prescription -- style. However, if you have less-than-perfect vision, then you may be correct. Special reading glasses like those featured run from a couple of hundred dollars to more than a couple of thousand. I hope this message finds you well. My name is Abbas Ismail, and I am writing to you from Zaria, Kaduna State. I work as an admin assistant at the Distance Learning Centre, Ahmadu Bello University. I am visually impaired and have very low vision, which significantly impacts my ability to read writings on paper, even with reading glasses. Special glasses, especially those with telescopes built in, are certainly heavier than regular glasses. However, there are ways to counteract and help with the weight issue. Other styles, such as prismatic glasses, are no heavier than regular glasses in most cases. Thank you for the question. --Dr. Long

What about uses with a computer?

Thank you for the question. Many of these options will work for the computer, but a few considerations must be taken into account. First, the working distance. Typically, you won't be comfortable being too close to a monitor -- which rules out a few options, such as microscopic systems. Second, the position of the monitor. Is it a laptop, viewed well below eye level? Or, is it a desktop, at or above eye level? Third, field of vision can make a difference too. With larger, or multiple monitors, a small-field telescopic lens might be difficult slow and frustrating to use. Finally, on the plus side, you have light being emitted from the monitor, so proper lighting is not as much of a concern. Wide-angle telescopic systems are preferred, but larger monitors and special software should be considered as well. --Dr. Long

Thank you for the question. A red reflex in the eyes is a very vague, unreliable method to determine a level of visual impairment. It can be useful as a crude estimate of determining if there are eye alignment or ocular health problems. --Dr. Long

@@anubhav2317 Prognosis for Best disease is mixed. Some carriers will never phenotypically express the disorder. Some individuals will never have progression beyond the earliest stages of the disease and will maintain better than 20/40 vision in both eyes. In general, most people will maintain reading vision in at least 1 eye throughout life. In one study, 88% of patients retained 20/40 or better visual acuity, and only 4% of them had 20/200 or worse visual acuity in the better eye. The deterioration of vision usually is very slow and is not significant in most individuals until after age 40 years.

And sir I have a question... if I have best vitelliform then does it eliminate chance of getting AMD because my macula is anyway getting degenerated... although in my family history there are no AMD patients..
