The cross section of these two groups is considerably smaller. These folks tend to be small company owners, business leaders and entrepreneurs. This video is created with a Canon HD camera. Currently I am using a GoPro Hero 2 camera because it is smaller and lighter. The flashing is due to the frame rate of the camera syncing with the refresh rate of the display and the RPM of the propeller. I have ordered a GoPro Hero 3 which should resolve the problem because it is capable of a faster frame rate... We shall see!

Hi RNET550E, Excellent observation and a good question. When the weather is low as it was this day, ATC is nor ally offering the best approach. It may be WAAS was not yet available. I do not recall. Sometimes I will intentionally use an approach that will result in a missed approach so that I can creat a good instructional video. Fly safely - Train often. .. DR

I was just a bit perplexed. The weather here in the south-west of Ireland is often overcast and the switching of a screen would be quite intrusive. Great video.Thanks for taking the time to explain.

I have upgraded to the Hero 3 Black Edition. It has more frame rate and resolution options. I am currently using 1080p and 48 fps. I have learned that most video professionals avoid shooting through the prop where possible and use special post production editing to resolve the "slow prop" issue and pulsing PFDs. I will not be doing that and I find the current setting best practice for this type of use. Sound is captured by using an aviation headset "splitter cable" available at Sporty's

The flashing screen on the PFD/MFD is the result of the refresh rate of the PFD/MFD being similar to, or a multiple of the video camera frame rate. In this case I used an older camera with a frame rate of 30 fps. I have since replaced that camera with an HD camera with a frame rate of 60 fps which obviates this effect.

Really video. Nice bird too! So did you have your headset plugged into video camera? I have a flightcam HD which plugs into pilot headset jack in 'sequence' with the headset. Works well but was wondering how the Canon hooks up.

youngtr2100 Hi youngtr2100, Dick Rochfort here. I am very familiar with the PA46. To say I am never unsure of myself is definitely an overstatement, however I know what to do when I am unsure so that I do not get behind. Using well-vetted checklists, flows, memory items and SOP at the appropriate times is the best way to achieve this, and seeking excellent training is the best way to accomplish this level of proficiency.

An old pilot, 66 years now, when I was flying they only had VOR. Just remember how much fun and how I enjoyed such. Flew in the Navy in the 70's. But very impressed with your knowledge and professionalism. Thanks.

Hello Captain, Do you have a written article I can refer to on this issue of using alternate air? My research into this has turned up that it is an issue with the PA-46 that resulted in an AD. But nothing so far on other aircraft. Thanks. George

pavelavietor1 Hi, I use 30 fps and a neutral density filter on the hero 3. It took a while to catch on to that technique and while not perfect it seems to work well enough.

The Avidyne displays will not pulse when the brightness is full.....so keeping them full should solve the problem.

Hi Brian, Thank you for your comment. The pulsing you observe in the video is a frame rate issue with the Hero video camera. The screen was not pulsing as we viewed it in person. I have since added a neutral density filter to the front of the camera lens which not only clears up the frame rate pulsing but it also removes unusual propeller artifacts.

pavelavietor1 The pulsing of the PFDs has to do with the camera frame rate synching with the refresh rate of the monitor. It is not intentional or desireable. I am working on it. Any ideas for resolving this are appreciated.
