Thank you. Very interesting. I went low carb in Oct 2021 after being diagnosed with diabetes but didn't use a glucose monitor. After less than 3 months it was remitted. The nurse at my GP's clinic recently gave me a glucose test and I was very thankful that I didn't need to monitor my glucose; of course if I needed to. I can imagine that CGMs make life a bit easier for people who need to monitor.

A great talk! I hope you're right - with widespread use of CGM's and the next generation of smart watches, the evidence for the many positive benefits of a low carb diet will be incontrovertible. It bothers me that most people still consider orange juice and cereal to be healthy components of breakfast.
@cudgee7144 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately most people after decades of being given the wrong information are reluctant to change, and breakfast is usually the meal they get most wrong. It is human nature to be hard to change peoples long term habits, you only have to look at the food given to patients in hospitals to realize how wrong they have it, if you haven't got pre-diabetes when you enter hospital good chance you'll have it when you leave.

I "was" pre-diabetic. I strong-armed my physician into a prescription for the Freestyle Libre 3 CGM (and I found the performance to exactly match yours as far as accuracy). It has been a tremendous help in understanding my diet choices (mostly carnivore). Have lost 50 pounds and have 10-15 more to lose. A1C calculated by the FL3 software of 5.6. CGM should be a standard issue tool for pre-diabetics. Restricting their use to Type 1 diabetics is abysmally STUPID.

I’m a carnivore too, but I’m also a T1 diabetic. I’m in the US and it’s covered by Medicare. Anyone who has diabetes needs a CGM to monitor their blood glucose.
@adelarsen9776 Жыл бұрын
You know what I do instead ? I just watch videos of people using the CGM and eating foods so I know exactly what to do. I know what doesn't spike A1c and that's meat and saturated fat together. Carnivore is proper human behaviour.

For people who feel the need to validate their low carb results with blood glucose measurements, some might shell out $100 for a patch. You can do the same thing at less expense but also less convenience with finger-prick tests. I agree, it would be great to have cheap CGM's, tho.

If you google Freestyle Libra they currently have a trial offer for 1 $15 for one months supply 😊 if you want more after that you have to buy them at full price.

At the beginning of low carb/ketogenic/carnivore, it is important to have a CGM, even if it is for only a few months. I have been on keto for nearly 5 months, and I am still wearing it because I need to watch the patterns and eat when my blood is lower, not when it is peaking. The CGM helps me to manage so much better by knowing more daily patterns. Unfortunately, I have discovered I have the dawn phenomenon and I cannot eat until 12 noon and then again at 6 pm, which is accidentally intermittent fasting. I didn't plan it, but rather, it was the best way to eat for my body. The exciting part is to watch bs to go down over time. I have been a type 2 for 40+ years and was on 17 u long acting insulin, 4 pills, 3 HBP pills and ozempic. And praise God, it is all gone except for 1 HBP pill. I have lost 10 lbs and still losing. And most importantly, my waist is down 2.5 inches.

Milk is quite a bit higher carb than you said, because of the lactose in it - 12 carb grams per cup. Cheese and other dairy products are much lower.

I committed to using 6 months of Freestyle Libre CGM out of interest (im a retired GP). VERY disappointed. One failed to break off the stylet when it was applied so had to be discarded and two consistently under-estimated my BGL. I was NOT walking around with BGL of 2.0. If you look online, there are a LOT of similar complaints. They clearly have a quality control problem. I cannot recommend this product

I just switched to a Dexcom G7 on 08/01/2023; but I still had 10 days on my Freestyle Libre, so I wore both. The Freestyle Libre ran about 30 points lower than the G7; however, fingersticks with a Contour Next were in the middle. The FreeStyle Libre is a flash globose monitor, not a continuous glucose monitor. The G7 is a CGM and can be calibrated with a finger stick to better the results.

reversing insulin resistance and D2 is completely possible. I went keto 》 ketovore 》 and mainly beef, eggs butter, salts & a few string beans What a transformation. NAFLD totally reversed as proved by 3 consecutive ultrasounds Starting with golfball size 42mm of fat absorbed by body with fasting 😊 dietary guidelines and the "balanced plate" is heavy with grains, with potentially poisonous kidney beans, shown twice in protein portion. I avoid the large fruit wedge and grains. Avoiding carbs, seed oils and processed mystery box food, takeaway etc Respect the blood work

I think part of the problem with doctors prescribing low GI diets is that the medication has advanced, but they haven't updated their advice. My doctor advised the "diabetic plate" and low GI foods, but then prescribed a slow release Metformin which is not able to deal with any kind of glucose spike at all when on this kind of diet. SR metformin does do very nicely on a low carb diet though, which I found out by experimentation and research. My doctor did inform me that T2 diabetes is a progressive disease, so at this point I feel like I'm just managing it myself, despite him.

Went low carb for two years while actively bicycling, and all my metbolic markers improved EXCEPT my a1c. Really irritated me and was a real setback. Still low carb, but not as religious. I suppose a CGM could help me figure out what is going on.

I exercise so much during the week plus I don’t have desk job. People just assume that I can just “burn it off”. This is a lie. After last year’s blood test, my A1C was a bit high and close to pre-diabetes. Doctor thought I was “normal” but I decided to reduce my carbs significantly. I lost weight but I think my liver slimmed down. People say my muscles look more tone. I always feel hungry but I’m not sure whether that’s from not eating enough or not resting enough - not enough recovery time.

It'd be nice if we T2D's could get it subsidised. Type 1's can. So far as I know it's a subscription model - so you go on paying.

My doctor didn’t know what a HOMA-IR was. Am I right by assuming that this test is expensive? My blood sugars seem normal from last year’s tests but I think it’s deception. It doesn’t indicate how hard the pancreas is working (or burning out).
@pokeypickle3 Жыл бұрын
I should have said how much background insulin resistance there is in the body - not how hard the pancreas is working.

It shouldn't be that expensive- about $40 in the US when you look for it online. It might not be available or expensive if you're in a more rural area. Where I live, we have them even cheaper, for about $25.

So expensive to have a cgm without having a prescription (with insurance) and it’s impossible to get a cgm if you don’t have insulin. You’d think it would cost way less to have as a preventative measure

They aren’t cheap, but at least in most countries you don’t need a description from a Doctor to get one…. In the US you need a prescription for some mad reason…. The cost is about $10 a day for me… so the question is what amount of money for you are you prepared to give up get one on your arm. For me that is two coffees… or less than a drink in a bar…. Realistically its not that much cash on a per day basis…. Run your numbers…

No doubt, a CGM is helpful, but a nicety, not a necessity; the same info can be gleaned with a GB test kit, available OTC from Walmart, at less than $40 for a 1 month supply of strips. By testing 3-4 times daily, the same info becomes apparent, but may take a month or so of consistent testing. The CGM is currently a racket, it's a $ maker for docs who must "prescribe" them, and mandatory "coaches" who offer info that is available free, all over the internet, for anyone willing to look. So I will wait till CGMs become available OTC at Walmart, reasonably priced, and no needless docs or coaches in the picture.
