I just received my Ibanez TMB-505 bass today. Got it on Amazon. Packaging was very good. I always see how a bass feels in my hands first, before plugging it in. This bass feels amazing!!! One thing I noticed, was the volume/ separation knob kind of stuck, meaning, if I turn the volume knob, the separation knob or pick up selection knob would turn also. Found a fix for that. The pick guard has a plastic protective film on it, if you peel it off without taking off the knobs, the plastic will kind of bind the knobs together. So, I removed the knobs, and removed all of the plastic, reinstalled the knobs, and problem solved!!!

Thanks. I had two of them from Thomann. Neck dive indeed and some aesthetic flows. Some hum too, and both of them had a very dark fretboard (almost as dark as rosewood), so that I could not see the small black dots. I liked the overall looks and sound but did not keep both, because of the ergonomics, playability, and also a less than perfect QC.

The hum you are hearing is from the single coil pick up in the bridge position. I would swap it out for the hum canceling version from Nordstrand. For now keep the balance set to the p pick up because they are naturally hum canceling

I picked one of these up after seeing your overview. It’s a beautiful instrument, especially the roasted maple neck and like the sort of Fender jaguar style of it. The hardware and electronics on it are hit and miss. The bridge feels really solid but the tuners on mine feel a little unstable and rattle unless I put some foam under the strings at the headstock. The preamp sounds really good though and so does the P pickup. The J pickup is okay but I think I would actually replace it for a Nord big stack or big split so it’s completely cancelling. Love the passive / active switch. Also I found this bass loves flatwound strings over rounds . Anyway thanks for having the best video on this bass on KZbin.
@LowEndLobster4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Michael! Glad you like the bass. As you've pointed out, there are definitely some corners cut but a night set of Wilkinson lightweight tuners and a better bridge pickup would make this thing a heavy hitter. The P is definitely the star of the show and it's buttah. Mine's making the rounds to some other folks, but when it gets back we'll be doing a more in depth vid and I'm going to throw on a set of flats! Great comment and thank you again :)

Those Nordstrand pickups sounded strong; any thoughts on their potential vs. fully-fledged Nordstrands? Also, given the price, were there any cosmetic flaws you saw? I know that even some of the higher-end Ibanez basses can come out of the factory in a not-quite-finished state!
@LowEndLobster4 жыл бұрын
I believe the CND pickups are designed by and approved by Nordstrand and just built by Ibanez. Honestly, they sound really really really good. I am VERY impressed with the sound and would think that the differences between those vs actual Nordstrands would be minimal (materials mainly, my guess at least). Cosmetic flaws on this instrument? None. However, I know what your saying. It's few and far between, but it does happen. I have 8 Ibanez basses, 5 of which are from the Indonesian factory, and only one had some very minor finish flaws (my 1505MS... not really worth mentioning honestly. VERY minor, and I'm not that picky.... well I am, but I've been working on getting over things that aren't that big of a deal). I believe the flaws on that bass are caused by the EHB recall to replace some of the bridge hardware and the tech may have accidentally dinged it (very very minor). I've had very good luck with my Ibanez basses.

I did just get a Ray24CA in, and it's a nice bass but I found that it shares many components with the SUB that's $200 USD less. Personally, I'd snag an SUB and then save for a pickup swap (preamp is solid enough turns out, the stock pickup is VERY hot but swapping it out for a better pickup can yield similar results to a Ray24CA while saving money). I will be checking out a TMB100 in the future though, stay tuned :)

Hey, could you please let me know how this neck compares to the EHB1005MS? Ignoring the multiscale aspect, the nut width and string spacing are the same but the Talman neck is, I believe, 1mm thicker. How does that translate to the feel in the hand? The neck on the 1005 is sublime. In fact, while we're at it, although they're very different basses, I'd be interested to know how you would describe the tonal differences too. Thanks.
@LowEndLobster4 жыл бұрын
The talman neck definitely feels a bit thicker. It's noticeable. The EHB has a bit more of a modern soundgear profile. It's not too thin, and is very comfortable. The Talman on the other hand is on the "chonkier" side of comfortable. No playability or comfort issues, just a little bit of extra girth that is noticeable. Tonally, it's night and day. The Talman goes for a much more classic vibe and tone, where the EHBs are a bit more modern. I think the EHBs can cover a wider array of tones overall, but for a really nice vintage tone... the Talman is really nice. That P pickup sounds SO GOOD.

@@LowEndLobster I had also meant to say....the thought of having to upgrade tuners to deal with neck dive on the TMB505 is not appealing; I already have to do that with the TMB105. Same goes for upgrading the Nordy bridge pickup to a fully humcancelling one on the TMB505...again, I already have to do that to the 105 as well. For the 105, if I do all that, I'm only out about £170 (Hipshots and a DiMarzio Ultra Jazz bridge pickup); if I do it for the 505, it's more like £230 (Hipshots again, but have to buy the special sized Nordy humcancelling CND bridge pickup from BestBassGear or Nordstrand themselves). So the 105 ends up costing me about £370 once all is said and done, but the 505 (£500 new here) is about £730 total when all is said and done, to deal with some of its issues.

IMO I don't think the preamp is needed. The stock electronics on this bass are BEASTLY. The bridge and tuners may improve the balance however, which would be welcomed on this instrument.

A lot of preamps do that, especially when they have a single coil. The SR1105 is definitely much higher end than this, the TMB505 is just a ridiculous bargain value. Hit me up on IG or FB my friend, always down for a bass chat :).

I think the look of the 4 string is better, the neck here feels oversized. With that short up horn it doesnt suffer from neck dive?

Yeah I was torn. I LOVE the green that the 4 string comes in, but I really wanted to try out the 5. I'll be checking this bass out with a strap to see if it still dives while standing in my full review... I'm going to assume yes haha. Thanks for the comment as always my friend!

Definitely considering this for purchase. How's the B string? Thanks!
@LowEndLobster4 жыл бұрын
The B string on this is pretty solid. I don't remember the neck joint used here (this bass is making the rounds to some youtube friends, will be back soon with a friend to review it along side!) but this was a really comfy and more "traditional" feeling bass out of Ibanez, very different from their soundgears in terms of feel. I'll be sure to play the B string a lot more when I do the full review.

@LowEndLobster4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kinnunen! I usually don't mention weights because weight can vary a lot between two examples of the same instrument. This one weighed in the high 9's/low 10's (lbs). Not a lightweight, but not a boat anchor. My Sterling Ray34 I just got weighs 11!

A few years ago, some Ibanez Talman basses had an issue with the battery draining even when unplugged. How's this one holding up? (If you still have it)
@LowEndLobster4 жыл бұрын
Mine doesn't have that issue, but my Affirma reissue did... I fixed it pretty easily. There was a short happening in the cavity that would keep discharging the battery. Located it and put a little piece of tape in the middle, and it's fine now.

@LowEndLobster3 жыл бұрын
Great question Garland! Same style bass, but the 605 has an ash body instead of okoume for the 505. The 605 also has the jatoba fingerboard with block inlays and non roasted neck. Same electronics in both however. Congrats on your new instrument!
@garlandlabat49223 жыл бұрын
@@LowEndLobster I think there is general confusion on the part of retailers. Search for the 605 on Guitar Center, Reverb, Musicians Friend or Sweetwater and the Gray Metalic (505) comes up, displayed as a 605. And the Specs show the information for the 505. I would have preferred the Ash body, but even though I ordered a 605, I expect that what I receive will be a 505. But I will still be happy with that. By the way, Mr Lobster, Ibanez has you to thank for my order. Your demo is the best one (by far) available! I was specifically searching for a 34' scale, and I believe this one has nailed it! I subscribed to your channel. Yours are the best bass demos on the web! Thank You!

The Talman does seem to be quite the bang for the buck, and they do play very well. However, the body shape just doesn’t do it for me. It reminds me of the drawing of an Amoeba I did for 5th grade science class...I wouldn’t get one for fear of contracting dysentery.
