In this episode I give my thoughts on the new Lowepro Powder BP 500 AW camera bag
Powder Backpack 500 AW from Lowepro is designed to serve the combined interests of the adventure photographer and winter sports enthusiast. Along the front and sides of this backpack, multiple heavy-duty compression straps allow skis, a snowboard, or other outdoor mountain equipment such as hiking poles to be conveniently harnessed and carried. Inside, the spacious main compartment has a partition system that forms an optional bottom section to accommodate an included camera equipment pouch. When the partition system is enabled, the space created above the equipment pouch can be dedicated to a variety of items such as batteries, memory cards, or packable clothing that need to be reached quickly and conveniently through the backpack's top opening.

Great review Darren. I recently got this bag, and agree with all of your points. It's a huge change from my previous (also Lowe Pro) camera only bags, the separate space at the top is perfect, although like you I can't get that top clip on section to cover the whole bag. Still, I don't see me going back to my 450AW Trekker any time soon.

I bought this bag after watching many reviews, including yours. Thanks for posting it. I have used it on a number of longer (for me) hikes of 20+kms. It’s comfortable, spacious and functional. I’m 6’2” and 215 lbs; it fits my frame well. Greetings from Canada.

Yeah been torn between this Lowepro, the Shimoda Explore v2 and the TILOPA. for one though there is the price for the last two and as for the f-stop I don't like how massive the camera unites are. Hi! Just a few question when it is full u can get to the airplane like a carry on?dimension? I use for 2 day of hike there are some attachment on the bottom for a light tent and sleeping bag ? thank Andrea

Yes you can .. I’ve travelled to England , Norway and Italy with it as carry on I would recommend putting your tripod in stowaway luggage , just because it may get caught up in items while moving thru the plane etc

Great review, Darren. I've been thinking about buying (another) new bag as, like you said, my current day bag, the F-Stop Guru, doesn't have enough space for additional personal items other then my camera gear. It's a good bag that's done me well for many years, with many of the same features as this, but just lacks the space needed for extra clothes, food etc. Thank you!

Yes the powder is great for exactly that .. since recording this I’ve brought this bag on a number of trips inc airlines without an issue and it’s worked perfectly in the field for the “extra” items .. handy when I was in -13c conditions in the Dolomites :-) thanks for subscribing and your support

Great review! Have you tried accessing you camera gear without taking the pack off (flipside style)? Saw a review on Lowepro Flipside Trek 450 saying its lack of metal frame made accessing the camera gear a bit awkward without putting the pack on the ground. I'm wondering if the internal frame of the Lowepro Powder 500 helps... or maybe the weight of it (being a 50L pack) makes this functionality not realistic?

Great review and great video. I am assuming this but... Surely this bag will do for all season use? Not just winter with Ski's on your back? i would ideally like on bag of this type for summer hiking, day ski tours and spring mountaineering... Will this suffice?

Excellent review Darren, I really really love this bag. I'd agree with you on the internal camera compartment zip being a bit difficult but as you say it really doesn't need to be done up when out in the field. That would be the only slight negative I'd have with it and the pros of the bag far outweigh that.

Just fold it under the unit and up the back when it’s inside the bag, it’s mainly for when you take the unit out.

Hi sir darren! This is on sale right now in the UAE for 50 % off. It's only $170 USD right now until May 26. I'm planning to buy this before the 26th. The only concern that I have are the straps seems too wide to accommodate the peak design capture clip. I don't know how to put the capture clip on that bag. Any ideas?

Thanks for you comment .. at this price I’d buy a second one :-) the straps are comfortable but not too wide so I’d do think the clip will work .. of it doesn’t then there are 2 adjustable mini straps on each strap itself

To solve your problem with the lid for the cameracompartment, fold it down and stuff it down in the bottom. Thats is what i’ve done and it works great
