The latest handling upgrade for my Focus RS from Powerflex!
Specifically, I am installing the lower engine mount small bush!
The Ford Focus RS MK3 has many rubber-lined bushings. Although Ford had a decent setup for the RS there is always room for improvement. In steps Powerflex to make things better from a bushing upgrade/compliance perspective!
This bushing upgrade is going to compliment a previous mod that I did in the form of the Mountune roll restrictor / rear motor mount as it is the bushing in the bracket that the roll restrictor bolts onto. This upgrade can therefore be considered as a stage 2 upgrade for the rear motor mount!
Instead of replacing the entire OE bracket that houses the small bush, this Powerflex insert simply replaces the bushing and metal insert that goes through the middle that the bolt to connect to the roll restrictor goes through. This means that the upgraded performance is achieved at minimal cost compared to competitors who offer a bushing upgrade pre-installed in a completely new bracket - super great value for money!
This will have multiple benefits over stock including: Replacing the perishable rubber bush - the stock rubber bush is getting a bit old now on my MK3 Ford Focus RS so will need replacing soon anyway so it is a perfect opportunity to replace it with a much more long lasting and durable material in polyurethane! Also then the polyurethane bushing from Powerflex is a good bit stiffer than the stock rubber bush so will not allow as much excessive flex as will be present in in the stock setup. This increase in structural rigidity will result in improved grip and better performance by reducing trans movement, in particular under load, to an additional degree to what I have already achieved with the rear motor mount / roll restrictor from Mountune!
There are 2 versions of the Powerflex bush available - the road (purple) version and the 'Black Series' with the latter being even stiffer than the road version. I chose the road series version of this upgrade for my Focus RS because I wanted to get good performance improvement without risking too much annoying additional NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) or any potential breaking issues caused by being too rigid - the black series is more track oriented whereas my main area of driving would be described as 'fast road' with a view to doing some tracking in the future, so the road series Powerflex setup should be ideal for me and indeed compliment the Mountune roll restrictor Powerflex bushing perfectly!
Bushing lubricant is included to aid installation - it can be a pretty tight squeeze inserting new bushes. Other than a good tool set, the only other item(s) to note that you will need are a way to get the car in the air!
All in all I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the install was (other that some awkward squeezing!) in particular if you have already installed a new rear motor mount / roll restrictor then much of the install process will be familiar to you. I did have to employ some creative tool use to remove the old OEM rubber bushing but I give a full explanation as I go along!
After the installation I go for a drive and provide you with my initial thoughts and experience of the new Powerflex mod and the setup in general!
Not to give away too many spoilers but the results are positive, including in one way that I wasn't entirely expecting with regards to a clunking noise that I had been experiencing changing through lower gears at low speeds!

Hey Adam I’ve fitted the lower gearbox mount and also all the powerflex mount inserts that you have done in your previous videos. I’ve found that there’s a little vibration at idle as expected but I fitted the powerflex insert you’ve done in this video and all the vibrations have gone 😁 did you have the same result?

I have exactly what you mentioned at the end of the video. In a morning, or when I’ve just started driving in first and second it’ll sway back and forth when I let off the accelerator. I’m really hoping this is the fix! Great video and thank you 👌🏻

Hi Adam..do u have a link for your ramps?. I could do with a decent set as mine are too big and my bumper catch’s and it’s a pain having to jack it up all the time. Cheers
