I am a Pathologist located in the US. I would take that study with a HUGE mountain of salt. 1) Invasive carcinomas develop from precursors that can take up to several decades to grow from a premalignant cell into invasive carcinoma. The effects of 'only' 3 years is pretty negligible when the precursor to the invasive cancer that developed during the study actually started growing 8 years before the study arose. 2) 'invasive cancer' is very nebulous and isn't actually specific enough to mean anything. There are THOUSANDS of different types of cancer, each with their own known and unknown predisposing causative agents. By saying 'invasive cancer' they're potentially lumping together melanomas (UV DNA damage) with conventional pulmonary adenocarcinoma (smoking), breast carcinoma of no special type (estrogen exposure and/or brca). These all are wildly different diseases. They are even less related to each other than carrots and celery are to poison hemlock. I honestly couldn't find a link to the study you are referencing in the description to look more closely at their claims, but I would be absolutely shocked if they were able to propose a suspected physiologic mechanism in how these findings affect such a wide variety of cancers. 3) splitting the study into so many different cohorts just reeks of p-hacking, especially when combined with how nonspecific 'invasive cancer' really is.

@lydwinaofschiedam26852 жыл бұрын
@@JohnGardnerAlhadis The definition of invasive cancer is: “Cancer that has spread beyond the layer of tissue in which it developed and is growing into surrounding, healthy tissues.” If the cancer has not spread “beyond the layer of tissue in which it developed”, it would be considered non-invasive.
@WanderTheNomad2 жыл бұрын
@@lydwinaofschiedam2685 Are those two the same as benign and malignant tumors?
@waterunderthebridge79502 жыл бұрын
@@WanderTheNomad They are not the same but my be functionally similar to each other. A non-invasive cancer (or sometimes called a cancer-in-situ) hasn’t invaded beyond the basal layer which is a requirement for malignant cancers. Still, if left untreated it is only a matter of time (depending on specific entity) for the cancer to invade beyond and turn malignant. The reason why we take the basal membrane as a dividing line is that cancer cells invading beyond start potentially being able to spread through the blood vessels/lymph vessels/etc to other parts of the body. A benign cancer is defined as never invading beyond its primary location but that doesn’t mean it’s not harmful. It can still grow by compressing adjacent tissue which in case of e.g. the brain might still lead to a loss of functionality and eventual death by disease.

There is no such thing as a cure for "cancer". We who do the research have known for a long time that cancers are all different, even cancers of the same type, like breast cancer, or prostate, or lung. Every one has multiple failures in various pathways that led to the cancers. Some pathways are more likely to fail than others, but that can change with genetic variation amongst people, environmental exposures, and random mutations. This is why some therapies work well for some patients, and fail completely for patients with seemingly the "same" cancer. Prevention in this case is worth a tonne of cure. So even if the verdict isn't in yet, there's nothing harmful here, and benefits beyond preventing malignancies. Go for it.

I cannot help but think about the people who were in the control group whenever I hear about this kind of study.
@HexerPsy2 жыл бұрын
Why? The point of research is to test your hypothesis. Taking vit-D, emega3 fats and excersize - although considered all positives seperately - may be a deadly combo when combined together. The control group risks choking on the pill, thus is risking its life in the control group. Laugh at that joke - but when you test 1 new surgery method against the standard surgery method, it may give worse outcome. Or it may not do better or worse at all. Test one new drug and it may indeed help against back pain for 9 in 10 patients - but as a side effect, 1 in 1000 may develop a serious side effect and suffer serious damage. This is why test subjects sit down with an informer, who offers the information about the intervention, and explains the risks. Not every study is the same, though. Some studies actually get cut short, because the premilinary data in the new intervention is performing (much) worse than the standard care for the control group, leading to a quick end of the study before it even required enough test subjects. Do we see publication of this data? These early cut 'pilot studies' often dont make the media and dont get quote in other research, but they are very useful to know what lines of research lead to dead ends.

I'm middle aged now. PMHx of heart, blood, cancer, and autoimmune diseases. Consistently, from my various battalion of medical practitioners, these are their recommendations to keep the cancer risk as low as possible, in order: Don't smoke, Don't drink, Eat as well as you can, Keep fit. Honestly, as I age, I struggle with a balanced diet and exercise. Not smoking and not drinking are both easy for me, but having cut all added sugars from my diet I have compensated by consuming more comforting foods. Thankfully, spring's here and hiking season is easier to attend to. I think it's safe to say we've all been touched by cancer in our lives. If you have people out there you want to be around for in the future, there are so many little things you can do to help mitigate cancer risks. If you're already healthy, maintenance is so much easier than krank-sacks like me. A huge and often not spoken of component of illnesses like cancer is mental health and a support network. You don't possibly stick to your diet or take your medication if you have raging clinical depression or have no one you can count on for a little help. Scientists love breaking things down into their simplest forms, finding out what they do in isolation, and then building back up from first principles. Thats a great way of finding stuff out in many areas, and has the advantage of simplicity and easy reproducibility. But the trouble is that biology is all about complex systems with multitudes of processes, many of which are dependant on other processes functioning correctly to function correctly themselves. It is a shame its taken so long for idea as simple as this to start being put into practice. But hopefully it will be a growing trend from now on.

Sure. We've also known abuse is bad for mental health. But in terms of research, these are both newer developments. There's a lot of factors in play, and finding statistically significant connections that can't be explained by other factors not only takes several iterations of more comprehensive trials, but time--lots of it. And, importantly, we're not looking for general connections ('eating well') but specific ones ('more vitamin D and omega-3), which again makes the process more difficult. We can take for granted how difficult it is to 'prove' common sense things scientifically. (And how long it takes to identify which things are most important.)

But how bad is it? Heard a Dutch lung doctor interviewed in the Netherlands the other day - she claimed that 2 in 3 smokers dont make it to their pension age (age 67 or so). To those who like me who sprout broccoli seeds with a measure of mustard thrown in, I hope you didn't get your last delivery nicked off your doorstep. If they do that with my apricot kernels next time around, I'll be doubly pissed. They're both a regimen that I'd add to the next study, just putting it out there

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, accounting for an estimated 9.6 million deaths, or one in six deaths, in 2018. Lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach and liver cancer are the most common types of cancer in men, while breast, colorectal, lung, cervical and thyroid cancer are the most common among women.

What about homes in areas that have higher radiation because there are gasses that are radioactive that fizzle up into your home
@katarh2 жыл бұрын
You can order a free radon test to see if your home is impacted by this problem, and then if it is, you can have mitigation to reduce the amount of it within the house. Mitigation is expensive, but the other option is moving someplace else....

Eat lots of fungus and hope that one of them absorbs the radiation. Or get samples from chernoble and try and grow that fungus in your basement…

I have a heart condition that is worsened by exercise, and Vitamin D and Fish oil supplements exacerbate my heart arrhythmia. So I'm screwed...
@stringbean022 жыл бұрын
You don't have to go the full supplement route, just try to improve your diet to include these things without using straight supplements. As for exercise, I don't know how bad your condition is, but just a little walk would do a lot of good.
@trololollolololololl2 жыл бұрын
Just eat as healthy as you can, and do walks

Not necessarily. You may have the sort of genetic and environmental profile which lowers your risk of certain types of cancers, so you may never develop one to begin with. Not everyone does, you know.

First off, I'm Norwegian. I've helped family in maritime business since I was a kid. That being said: what can you do with the leftovers after you filet a fish? It goes to primary 3 uses, bouillon, omega 3 and animal feed. Now, Norway has always been a maritime country, we live by, eat from and cherish our seas. But, what do you think this market wants for the millions of tonnes of fish scraps going to waste? Juice the mf for the carbs and fat. And pump billions into a longterm campaign to promote fish oil as healthy. TLDR: eat fish, it is delicious, but stop drinking the juice. It does nothing, other than loosing you money.

1. that is much too small a sample size to draw any meaningful results. 2. Three years...most cancers take 6-10 years to develop...At best you're looking at a short delay in cancer detection...slowing cancer down a bit perhaps. 3. Your study group was people overr 70...this is a population of people who, since they're still alive at 70 most likely don't have the serious genetic mutations (there are many) that not only predispose someone to aggressive cancer, but also fuel cancer, and is most often deadly. So basically, this is like taking a group of people who having lived to 70 at not at risk of the aggressive cancers that strike younger people. But still, better than nothing!

Wouldn’t real prevention require an honest admission that a lot of the food that makes it into the market is full of carcinogens. We have nutrition facts on food, but we’re going to need a carcinogen breakdown on food if we really want to prevent it. This of course is asking corporations to shoot them selves on the foot, so maybe it’s best to ignore the real root of the problem and instead put all the responsibility on the consumer.
@w982 жыл бұрын
So true. I’ve recently just started to get into clean eating and it’s terrifying to find out that like 90% of what’s in the supermarket is basically carcinogenic. So many highly processed oils, refined sugars, and any number of additives in food makes it impossible to shop lol
