I think one our problems as human beings is that we like to try and shape the universe to fit around us, rather than us learning to fit in the universe. So we tend to change or manipulate history/facts in order to fit our needs or conveniences, or give us power over other humans- when in reality that could be no further from the truth. So I think religion is just a victim this mortal flaw as well, with years of being shaped and molded to fit a particular mans' needs, not everyone as an equal.
