Excellent video, I’ve just bought a small Gunter dinghy, It’s a Tideway, and this has shown me all I need to know on how to rig and reef. Perfect, thanks for taking the time to do this...and I’m guessing all done one handed ! Cheers, Richard

Nele Abels not too much work. I don't think it takes much longer to make a pretty boat than an ugly one. The major time difference in the build is the time taken looking at the beautiful lines the designer has made for you to build

Richard - I have been searching the web for ages on how to rig a Penobscot 14 and had given up. Now I've bumped into your brilliant how-to and have made a mini-manual for myself to start making modifications to my rigging. Your rigging makes so much sense and has a number of clever innovations not in the original building materials. Thanks again for spending time making and posting this video! I noticed you have an eye strap / saddle on the mast head - what is that used for?

trinity2too2 I had originally rigged some lazy jacks that went from that saddle under the boom and back to the top through the port side block but went back to a simple topping lift

Richard, Many thanks for this very thorough tutorial. On my P14 I only have 2 lines to the yard. One about 3 ft from the throat and one line just inches from the throat. Also, I don't have the sliding wire on the arm that you use. Can you talk about the advantages of your rig? Brian

Hi Brian, the wire on the gaff is there to allow the sail to be reefed without needing the sail to be taken down and your gaff halyard tied to a new spot. The wire runs between the two locations that you would tie the gaff halyard in the reefed and full sail so at these points the yard is still held in tight to the mast

This configuration is called a sliding gunter so if Google that you will find further information

Why do you rig a backstay and remove it again after rigging the mainsail? is it because the shrouds don't reach back a bit and you want to secure the mast from falling towards the bow?

Nele Abels I think you might be referring to the topping lift. This just holds the boom up while you are rigging and also when you want to put a reef in the sail. When you are reeding on the water it is far safer for the boom to swing free rather than it being in the bottom of the boat
