LP Smartside VS James Hardie (Warranty Failed)
James Hardie Siding VS LP Smartside Siding reviews, we just deed a simple water test on both products to see if either one would in fact absorb water. Facts are Facts on a driving rain they both can absorb water and will fail if not installed correctly. Proper siding installation is vital along with proper calking.
Witch product is better James Hardie or LP Smartside? Both are great products, but the fact is James Hardie should not be installed an any state which drops below freezing (-32) James Hardie siding will blow apart & crumble. I have it on my home in Florida… Perfect product there.
LP Smartside siding will in fact Root if it is not properly installed, no one should be ordering it prefinished. Guaranteed to fail!... It is a great product but must be face caulked sealed very well then you can spray paint the LP Smartside Siding and back brush the bottom of each panel. That underside needs 3 good heavy coats.

The amount of anxiety I have over this potential $10K - $14K decision is only growing. I appreciate you putting a spotlight on the pitfalls of these products and how to avoid them. Getting advice and knowledge from someone who has nothing to gain is invaluable.

I appreciate the content here. Another consideration is to use a rain screen behind the siding so there is ventilation and drying and draining happening behind the siding. God bless you

Great video and thank you. I’m going with LP on my home ( at least I get 5 years and hail coverage) and seal my edges with Sherman Williams and caulk well and then maintain it like you have to do with everything in life ( like your body your car or anything else in life). You did a great job and taught we a lot and very appreciated!!

I had my OSB crap siding replaced in 1998 with Hardie shortly after they made available the Hardie trim so I could get the complete system. I specified the primed Hardie 12" lap board and used the only certified paint at the time ICI delux. My painter caulked everything and applied 2 coats of paint with 48 hours between coats. Nearly 26 years later with all the Houston humidity and mildew all 1500 sq ft of siding looks brand new. I pressure wash every 8 years or so and have never noticed any blisters, peeling or swelling. However squirrels love chewing on the corners of the second story. which I've fixed with a tin corner wrap.

This is a really great informative video. I just installed LP siding for the first time on a section of my home. When I paint sprayed the LP siding, I stilll see open pores on the bottom edge of the siding. I don't think paint spraying is sufficient. After watching this video, I am going to make sure to fill those pores up by brushing the paint in to fill those pores

What siding would you recommend in Seattle/Tacoma WA? While we are known for mild climate but we do get fair share of rain, sun, wind, and cold spells. Its hard to determine whats better suited such as steel or hardie or smartside or the advanced smartside prefinisher like Diamond Kote. Any thoughts?

I appreciate your efforts to give advice on siding. You brought up points regarding proper maintenance and install that makes a difference. I am not familiar with Hardy Board so I will avoid commenting on them. LP Smart is not OSB. It is classified as an engineered wood. I wish you would have mentioned the scientific testing done from both companies. Soaking in water doesn't seem a way to go. A better choice of paint would have been Sherwin Williams Resilience . Customer can order none-paint products. You gave very little info on the final choice.
@letsdiymyhome
@letsdiymyhome Жыл бұрын
Richard thank you my friend, me sticking the product in water only proves the inevitable the fact is siding will absorb water and it will root in time the point of the bucket just speeding up the process you are right smartside is engineered wood but then again OSB was engineered as well they're very similar outside of the treatment process that LP does. Ask for Sherwin-Williams paint? (Note: I love Sherwin Williams Paint) I frankly don't care what paint one uses the moisture soaks in from the lower lap side when it wicks so rather factory painted or not that too fails if you paint it after the install and caulk everything before paint you will have a much better product in the end and YES LP Agrees with me on that point.... Have A great Day!

What I find that saves any kind of siding is a lot of paint. I like Hardie for fire safety but I hate the dust and LP is a lot easier to cut but it doesn't stand up to fire. But either one if you don't paint you are going to loose the material.

I installed LP in Texas for over 12 years. Not that long as I am back on the East coast but have installed LP for almost 20 years (I was not a siding only installer but a general contractor) I will say this, I have never had a call back ever on LP. I hate to admit it, but my installers and painters were good, but they were not master craftsmen. FWIW, if it were my house, I would use LP.

After watching your video, it makes me think good old-fashioned wood cedar siding might be the best product. Also, it seems back priming the Hardie and LP products might improve their durability. Of course, with any of them proper installation is critical!

James my Friend you are 100% correct on all of it. My new home will be done with cedar on the front and LP on the rest of it. Real Cedar cant be beaten. You put 3 good coats of oil stain that will last many many yrs. I think the main reason for LP/Hardie is for the maintenance free but in reality nether of them products are maintenance free at all.... "HOG WASH"

I no you don't need the R-Value but the back makes vinyl 300 stronger. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKuzoayBnLuUoqs Bob Hope this was somewhat helpful Have A Great Day! SteveOOO

Yes this is a problem that can happen with steel siding, the good news pending the brand you can file a claim and perhaps get it repaired for free. That would be my first stem then I my self would have it corn blasted then spray 3 coats of a good primer / paint.... unless the siding is shot ... vinyl NO!! that is a less quality product. hardy and LP will need to be painted as well. I hope that helps!!!!

FerrariDan, your entitled to your 2 cents... and the same can be said about hardi board. Like I stated If I lived in a state that did not freeze then use hardi if you live in a state that freezes DO NOT USE HARDI! Hard Fails in Minnesota and even a lot of our suppliers are now dropping it. As long as the LP is hand panted and all pours are sealed you will not have a issue. Got termites then go Hardi both products are good and bad just don't plane on a filling a claim after 5 yrs you lose. Again nothing is maintenance free!!!

Do you actually install Everlast? That was my first choice, but the limited amount of resources that they provide about their system have led me to reconsider. The J channel with 1/4-1/2 inch gap required makes room for driving rain to intrude behind the siding. They also state that It is not a fully waterproof barrier for that reason, but that the edges should NOT be caulked like you would with LP or Hardie, which is a major red flag for me.
@Notch8
@Notch8 3 ай бұрын
Don't confuse cladding with a WRB (Weather resistant barrier). Everlast, Hardie, or Smartside are all claddings. You still need a WRB behind all products like Tyvek, Zip system, or a peel and stock WRB.
@brightlightabove
@brightlightabove 3 ай бұрын
@@Notch8 Understood, but you’re still nailing thousands of nails through your wrb to install your cladding. At least Hardie and LP are systems that are sealed with caulk and flashing. Vinyl and other j channel systems are designed in such a way that water has both other choice but to get behind them around windows, especially during driving rains.

Factory paint on LP isn't the only problem, at my HD about 50% of the LP siding is already damaged . Apparently their primer doesn't bond well because it's always chipped/peeled off while it's on the shelf, lots have damage to the bare OSB side too. A lot of contractors are probably buying and using those damaged pieces thinking it will be just fine.
