LRF fishing for Flounders | LRF x Dropshot | Beach Fishing Scotland's East Coast.

Big rods set on a tripod, heavy leads, and indistinguishable bites are all aspects of traditional beach fishing for the various species of flatfish that inhabit our coastal waters. We've often experienced situations where it was almost impossible to determine whether a fish had been hooked or not. Nevertheless, we've always been quite partial to a flattie session. However, there must be another way.
With the recent rise in popularity of LRF and HRF techniques on rock, pier, and similar marks, the thought occurred that, surely, a similar approach must work on a beach. So after some tinkering with rigs, we set out to wade through the waves with a light rod in hand and minimal gear in search of some light sport in the surf and a frolic with some Flounders.

I've caught wee flatty on sandeel looking lure just by dragging it on the sand. As well caught few rags hehe. Will try your method definitely.

I've used this method of fishing both a bit north of where you were and on Lewis and Harris, where the method is very popular. Be aware some beaches fish better at different times of the tide, my local fishes better 2 hours either side of low tide. I have seen or had myself, flukes, Bass and Turbot from East coast beaches using similar methods. I tend to use longer flowing traces and watch leads, keep the bait moving and I tend to use more fish rather than worm baits, whole Sandeels are a favourite on 2/0 circle hooks. Nice camera work and editing, enjoyable fishing with the two of you.

You should go towards the river tyne mouth and you have better chance of a turbot .

Flounders for me we're I have tried and done well is. At salt coats at the caravan park just go over the railway bridge. And at Bowling harbour at old kilpatrick just near you Gordon

Great videos - keep them coming. You need to have a go at fishing mud minnows for flounder in and around Chesapeake bay area. I think a foreign adventure video must be about due.

Love the approach to Flounder fishing here. They are fantastic fish to catch on an LRF type rod with a drop shot or Texas rig etc. Why anyone wants to fish for them with 12 foot beach casters and heavy leads is beyond me. Absolutely no sport in that. A good size flounder on a teeny rod is a cracking battle!

I used to fish it every year until about 4 years ago. Had some nice fish, but there was a hell of a lot of fishing for very little catching. Typical Salmon fishing, I suppose.

@@angling360 I'd call it lightish bait fishing. LRF is a style of fishing where you use rods with a casting weight of 10g maximum but most people use around 5g. LRF fishing doesn't involve bait of any kind either, lures only.
