Ok, so I'm doing a Cam only swap on my 2005 Hummer H2. The Hummer only has 58k miles on it. I know, very low for the year. Anyway, the heads are 317 and it came, from factory, with regular head gasket part number 12589227. However, my heads appear to have that notch. My Heads also came with ALL long bolts. Very weird, because I would have thought it came with the gasket that has that notch and also the two shorter bolts at the ends. Anyway, as practice, replace parts that came off the original truck, so that is what I am going to do. Even though it has that notch in the head.

I just purchase the Mahle 54441 cylinder head gaskets. Does it matter which is R or L?

I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, but the head gasket is universal for both banks.

After seeing what the idiots did with the head gaskets and no water pump gasket. I'd be worried about the bottom end and main bearings.
