LS Swap - Fuel System

Join me as I figure out and install the fuel supply system for my 1981 Chevrolet Malibu G Body LS swap. Fuel tank, sender, connections and fittings. High pressure fuel injection hose etc. Budget friendly, but still good quality. This information can be used for any LS Swap.

Great video man. Your setup is almost the same way I did my 69 Chevelle. With the exception of the in-tank fuel pump, I drilled big holes in the bottom of my tank and welded on a bottom sump(Kenda triangular shaped) with two 1/2" bungs and an inline pump.

I used to have a sump on this car, and an in line pump for a SBC, but I wanted it quiet this time. I am doing a similar set up to this on my 57 truck very soon.

@@SlowCarFixlater on, after everything is sorted out, I might try to cut open my original tank and try to put some sort of baffles and a sump inside of it. The online pump is fairly loud, and I'm (like you) really wanting to make it a driver car again.

You actually was the first person to explain in detail what's what on the fuel system thank you 🙏 but how did you get the line from the engine to the filter to go in to the filter do it just pop in

it's a "quick connect" fitting that pushes on the fuel rail, just like the other ones I used on the fuel pressure regulator etc.

I am ls swapping a 96 f350 with the 351w (has injectors already . Will I have to switch the pump ? Swapping a 5.3 in the truck

I'm not that familiar with Ford stuff, but you need 60psi to keep an LS happy. It doesn't matter what pump you use, as long as you get the correct fuel pressure and flow rate. Hope that helps.

No relay, I just wired it to the LS harness.

Great video. Did you use all the “stock” wires that came with the GN sending unit? The power and ground wires seem to thin to handle the demands of an aftermarket fuel pump. Also the pass through on top of sending unit. That’s all stock, just like when you bought it?

Yes, I used the wiring that came with the sender and connected it to the pump. No issues, and it's been a few years and lots of miles.

Thanks for the quick reply! I think im going to upgrade them anyway to be on the safe side. I’m using a Holley 340 LPH pump and they say in the instructions to use at least 12 gauge wire to connect to the pump.

Question about the color of the wires on the sending unit. I know the black needs to be grounded to chassis but the purple and grey wire not sure. I have a 85 Chevy Caprice Classic that wasn't fuel injection that has the 1 wire at the tank. I bought the Fg10 f spectra sending with a PSI harness. Just need to know where to run those other two wires

Grey wire is pump power, purple is the sender.

Thank you, so that I understand you correctly grey wire goes to relay power and purple is connected to sender, there's a single red wire that I unplugged from my tank do I have to tie into that wire and run it to the relay provided on the harness. Sorry for all the questions I just don't want to mess things up because it's my first swap and KZbin is helpful but no one really go into detail about exactly where each wire goes. Thx again...

@@Berryhill42 I'm not sure about the red. I'd have to see it. Yes, the grey should go to the relay that feeds your fuel pump and purple to the factory sender wire.

@@SlowCarFix the red wire on my original setup which had a mechanical fuel pump was the wire to let you know how much gas was in the tank. The original sending had just 2 wires black ground and red fuel level wire. The sending unit and tank I have is set-up for 1986-90 Chevy Caprice Classic FG10F which has 3 wires, a black ground, grey to the sender and my question does the purple wire go to the relay that was provided with the LS swap harness

@@Berryhill42 On the one I used, purple was the sender. So that would go to your red wire (if that's your factory sender) The grey was power to the electric fuel pump.

sure it will, but you still need a baffled tank to run an in tank fuel pump properly. I recommend a grand national tank or fuel injected monte Carlo tank.

I believe it did, if you can't see the bottom of the tank through the sender hole, it's likely a baffled tank.

Hey, I’m doing a 5.3 vortec swap into a 1972 Caprice.... do I need to change anything with the fuel system or can I just run it with the factory unit.

yes you need to change everything, it's a good part of the job. You need an electric pump, regulator, high pressure line etc. Pretty much everything I describe in this video. It's not hard but takes time.

I can't remember off the top of my head, but I go through all the part numbers in the video. I have had no issues with this set up so far.

@@SlowCarFix its a 340lph pump. The reason I asked is because a lot of people say don't run anything bigger than a 255lph pump for the 33737 filter/regulator. Just seeing if that is a myth, or justifiable.

@@claytonhaske It's good you checked. So far no issues. What are the common issues with that pump and stock regulator? When I researched I didn't see any issues. I thought it is a common set up.

@@SlowCarFix Note: The C5 Filter/Regulator is capable of flowing a maximum of 255LPH. Beyond that amount, there is the potential for fuel pressure creep as the flow rate can overwhelm the internal regulator. This is in the description from a c5 regulator from ebay, ill see if I can find anything like that for a wix specific regulator

Why did you use a zip tie to secure the pump to the sending unit? Hose clamp would have been better, zip tie will get brittle in fuel over time.
