The deer made me think, it would be fun to see how old deer rifles do on the range. Like how far can you really push a 30-30, a Remington Model 8, or a Savage 99. Alot of deer rifles were used by police back in the day, so they do have some basis in keeping with the vibe of the channel

30-30 loses velocity fast and has a rainbow arc at 250. It can't be loaded with Spitzer and only runs 42000 psi. Fun cartridge but close up only. I was watching a "ron spomer" video yesterday where a guy has a pre '64 Winchester model 70 in 270 printing an inch repeatedly.

NRL/PRS shooter here. PRS rifles usually have heavy barrels and chassis weights. NRL rifles are usually much lighter because they are meant to simulate hunting conditions. NRL's heaviest weight division is 16 lbs, but PRS rifles usually exceed 20 lbs
@flopus72 ай бұрын
Is it easier to get into nrl? I have 0 experience with bolt guns but recently gained access to a long range range
@MINDPLUNK2 ай бұрын
@@flopus7 NRL is expensive to get into because it requires a rifle, a good tripod, binoculars, and a shmedium bag. PRS only requires a rifle and a shmedium. NRL is way more fun, though
@flopus72 ай бұрын
@@MINDPLUNK appreciate it
@davidproctor71022 ай бұрын
@@MINDPLUNK For both you will also need a bipod. I agree that you can get by in your first PRS match with just a rifle (folks will let you borrow a bag/bipod or anything else you need), but you'll want your own tripod and observation optics real soon to find targets, watch others shoot, and (at club matches) call impacts, so the cost difference isn't much if you get into it. One exception to that is that for NRL you also need a rangefinder, Ideally one in your binos which also have a ballistics solver. And given that you need to search for field targets on the clock, bino optical quality matters a ton for NRL. There are PRS pros who are perfectly happy with $500 binos, but the top NRL guys are using $2.5k+ binos. NRL can be a much steeper learning curve because it's 100% possible to zero a stage because you never found the targets. In PRS even when you zero a stage you took a bunch of shots that you are hopefully learning from. So from an "easier to get in to" perspective, PRS is way easier skills wise because you can uses matches as training. NRL Hunter is more like an exam. Plus you get to BS/talk/ask questions of your squadmates a lot more in PRS. In my experience much more fun and beginner-friendly. I suggest that you shoot your first NRL match in Skills division. You won't be eligible for prizes but the RO (or any squadmate who has already shot the stage) can coach you on the clock. Makes for a much easier time.

My dad told me a story about marksmanship day in his Air Force training: After warming up shooting targets, new ones were put up and now it was time for a group of soldiers to qualify. As the range was made hot, a crow lands near one of the targets. The range officer said "The crow is not to be shot", and then began the qualification. First shots rang out, and the crow drops off its perch. As it turns out, everyone had a hole on their paper, except for one shooter's....😅😂...who got disciplined.
@hkguitar19842 ай бұрын
LOL, in 1980 I had the same type of thing happen at our Small Arms Qualification at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. We had just returned from checking our 100 Yard targets. The guy 4 rows down from me was from Texas, he returned his target without a hit on it. The Range Master made the Range Cold as he interrogated him as to why he couldn't hit the target. A couple minutes of conversations took place when the Airman started walking back out to his target. About 60 yards out he stops, bends down, and picks up a dead 4 ft. Rattle Snake! LOL The snakes were everywhere down there. He'd spotted the snake on his previous trip out to put up a new target, being local and used to rattle snakes he'd simply stepped over it with the full intent to blast it once he had the chance. Good times looking back, I miss the 1980s!

Thanks for another great video. Interestingly, the British Army's 7.62 Lee Enfield-based L42A1 sniper rifle used in the 1970s and 1980s also originated from the work of civilian target shooters. in the 1960s the Army had tried to convert .303 No4 rifles to 7.62 but failed because they could not get them to shoot accurately. Independently civilian target shooters at Bisley had begun fitting long heavy free floated 7.62 target barrels to No.4 rifles with great success. So the army ended up copying them to create the L42A1.

We really need MOA and sub MOA targets at 1000, I have a few I can donate and I'll ask Dave if they are ok with me sticking them out there on my next range trip. Fingers crossed we can get the 1000+ extension to the range one day.

I've had days like this. Collect my GOV from parking, find I need to back inside for something, hit the locks and close the door, then realize I only have my POV keys in my pocket. Say very impolite things in several languages. Head to the garage to collect the spare set. Endure obligatory chaffing from the mechanics. Get back to my GOV to find the keys on the hood ( *not* inside the locked truck) where I tossed them to free up my hands to open the truck and stow the stuff I was carrying. Say some more impolite things in several languages. Return the spare keys to the garage, but carefully do *not* tell the mechanics where I found the regular keys. Delayed Monday.

I had a Remington 700 action with a tapered 22-250 barrel on it. When I got some money together I decided to have something built out of it. So I got a McMillan A5 stock with their lightweight fill. Blueprint bolt/action/barrel interface. Proof research carbon wrapped barrel 6.5 CM. 4.5×14 Leopold. It's 30mm tube and either 50 or 56mm objective The turrets are under aluminum caps but it has the side focus knob and mil dot reticle. It's the scope I have from a previous gun. I'll get something better when my skill deserves it. It's almost done. For some reason I didn't get a extractor with my new bolt assembly. Got the big badger knob for it. Also having QD sling cups flush mounted into the stock. Has a trigger tech trigger and AI Magazine feed. I'm thinking with all this is I can't hit shit it will definitely be me that's the problem. Looking forward for it to be done

Why don't they use streight pull lockups in army or competition. At least I don't see them by a margain.
@MandoWookie2 ай бұрын
Because most straight pull guns are just rotating bolt guns with extra steps. The ones that aren't are either inherently weaker or not as accurate as conventional bolt designs, or actually slower and rougher to run. The ones that aren't usually rely on esoteric lockup systems like ball bearings or something and require by default just much higher cost of manufacturing. Biggest reason is that the only time bolt actions are still in use in modern militaries is for this kind of long range precision and straight pulls dont have any real advantages. And since most PRS rifles are descendents of a long line of development starting with military issue rifles from WW1/WW2, most of which are turn bolts, exclusively are in fact from any major power that had or continued to have an actual dedicated sniper program. The Swiss are the only ones that did serious work with doing PRS straight pulls, and that's just because its what they had. The only other major user of straight pull rifles was Austria-Hungary, and those died with the Empire, & again had no advantage over Mausers. The Canadian Ross rifle was also a dead end that was never going anywhere after WW1.
