Clarence is one of those shows that genuinely make me feel like a kid again. I'll say this, if Clarence was released before 2010 it would have been considered one of the best cartoons of CN, but when it initially aired people wanted family cartoons to have unnecessary big plots, you can see this with the firsts pair of seasons of Adventure time, it started as a silly cartoon until they began to put major lore into it

I love Clarence so much. It’s the only cartoon that I’ve seen that really represents growing up in lower middle class. Clarence is a fun kid, who still actually acts like a child compared to other cartoon children in other shows.
@okjeffy65813 жыл бұрын
But I remember in a 1991-1998 series that aired on Fox Kids, (and I know that there not actually be one, but I remember it very well. Hell, or it maybe was just a fever dream that took place in my early childhood) Clarence was portrayed as a nice and smart, sometimes dull and mean character. His voice was much more different, his appearance was much more shorter, his shirt was fully green, and he kind of had a look that resembled garfield the cat. I don't know if it was real, or maybe it was just a weird fever dream if mines.

Its such a sweet show. Anyone else would depict Sumo as a idiot and his father abusive, but they didn't make them that way, they are smart and resourceful. Jeff definitely has OCD, and they show the truggle of it. He hangs out with kids who probably have ADHD which must be a nightmare. They showed kids with can't keep up with the others without makingthem seem lesser, they showed people who aren't perfect parents without making them awful. Clarence is a character without a dad, and they don't make him sad. He says "I don't have a dad but I have a Chad" It's so sweet. This show is so good, it depicts odd situations in a positive light.

I've actually adored Clarence right from its pilot. Seeing a kid character who is so unapologetically in love with life was just charming, and his demeanor, while yes obnoxious, was quirky and charming. The dynamic between the main trio is great and well-developed, and as you mention the show's continuity, while not being a plot driven show, was fantastic. Also...the people who made this show clearly love their horror movies. There were horror homages, episodes with a surprisingly dark tone, and...everything to do with Gilben. As an adult and a horror fan it made me appreciate the show on another level.

I remember really liking this show. It’s very grounded, and realistic. The characters are all clearly stereotypes, but still very fleshed out and characteristically put together in realistic and less dramatic ways than you’d expect in a kids cartoon. For example, Sumo is very clearly poor, and somewhat neglected by his rough and disengaged family. And due to that, he is the rough, tough, lesser-hygienic and sometimes batshit crazy child in the friend group. But the show never has to directly explain that to anyone. If you know, you know. And that’s all the show gives you. It’s very subtle and I remember when watching the show as a tween, it felt pretty personal and each little adventure the kids would go on would remind me of real life events of my own childhood that I used to enjoy. It was a really great show in my eyes.

I think it's silly that some people criticize children's cartoons like they're Evangelion or something. But at the same time, I kind of sympathize with their point. SpongeBob and so many other animated shows manage to be appealing to adults while being a kids' show. And that's pretty much always a good thing, I guess. I see your point. Never really cared about TTG but people always say they hate that show as if it's some sort of unpopular opinion.
@embracethememe48884 жыл бұрын
@Illumurian define quality? What a child thinks is quality is much different to an adult
@night-seeker6664 жыл бұрын
@@mat2468xk Well, people treat it like an unpopular opinion because of people who use the excuse that it's a kids show and we should be soft on it. Shows like early Spongebob and Transformers Prime are excellent examples of having moments that kids will enjoy and adults will understand. Then there are shows like TTG and the early-new Spongebob episodes (the newer ones are getting better) send messages to kids like we should keep our rooms trashed and that it's okay to abandon a city to burn a Wicker Man of the person you left behind and dance on the ashes. We're not gonna leave these cartoons alone. Why? Because we don't like them. If you are against a cartoon I don't like, then that's fine.

Not gonna lie, I was one of those people who thought Clarence was gonna be another CN failure but the more I got into it the more I understood how deep, meaningful and heartwarming it was. From Clarence trying to be a beacon of hope and make everyone feel happier from kids to even adults and reminding them that nobody is perfect and that we should embrace our flaws because it makes us unique, Jeff wanting to fit in and finally be accepted as a normal kid but also learning to let loose and have some fun, to Sumo just wanting to live the best of his childhood while also trying to prove that he’s something to his family. Also how the show tried to be relatable to everyday kids instead of making the show about a rich kid going on mysterious adventures or some kid with superpowers and a talking pet or some bs like that lol. Clarence was a under appreciated gem.

I absolutely love this show, and I think it's actually extremely realistic while still being silly. And I love how all the settings are kind of run down and dingy, and full of detail. So much that you sometimes have to pause or rewind just to catch everything. You don't get that with a lot of cartoons. Also Clarence's mom kinda thicc.

Clarence is a lot darker than it is it showes problems with/ having fun with friendship, relationship, trauma, hygiene, family, creative, independence, anxiety, and so many more this show was very heartwarming and really relatable and a reason why its so good. Clarence sees everything something you can build a beautiful thing very spontaneous. and Jeffs control freak and why hes like that sumo with his family relationships and how it reflects on relationship honestly every character has that and its very good written even the background characters very entertaining.

When it was airing, I didn't necessarily think it was a bad show! Although, I was about 6 years old and in second grade. But when I watched the clips in this video, they weren't that bad!, and I was surprised about how much I remembered! Also, Clarence is supposed to be from the perspective of a kid! So of course it's going to get a bit annoying at times! Even then, it adds charm to the series, and adds realism! And many young kids can relate to it! Overall, you did a great job at doing this series the justice it deserves! Can't wait to see what you have planned next!

"I'd rather that than him just be a perfect character who can do no wrong." I caught this show from time to time and always thought it was really funny and Clarence was a big part of that.
@nuibaba2804 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, I remember Steven in earlier seasons being perfect. Totally, messing up missions and basing his entire self worth on how useful he is and other things. I get that SU is very VERY flawed but are we going to seriously act like Steven is perfect?
@thatgirlinamask86994 жыл бұрын
@ヌイババNuibaba the fact of the matter is even if he does make mistakes, those mistakes never have a lasting impact or ended up with him punished, everyone just treats him like he can do no wrong, and when he does they forgive him.

@ヌイババNuibaba I thought we were talking about the early show, I understand that later on the writers became competent with character use and development, they learned that actions have consequences, and that is a good thing
@nuibaba2804 жыл бұрын
The early show has Steven mess up showing he isn't perfect and actions led to consequences in the future from Steven's messed up emotional state from trying so hard to appeal to the formerly neglectful gems to all sorts of trouble. What is the issue? Steven's a naive kid at the time and it's not like he never gets consequences.
@xanderg.10704 жыл бұрын
I feel like this and Uncle Grandpa were too overlooked and hated because they aired around the same time with all the story-centric shows like Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe, and Over the Garden Wall on Cartoon Network, and Gravity Falls, Star VS the Forces Of Evil on Disney Channel
@blindtreeman8052 Жыл бұрын
the answer why it was hated was simple. some happy kids grew up to be sad older kids/ young adults, and some of them don't like seeing kids younger than them be happy. that's pretty much it. when you're going through some shit, the last thing some people want to see is a naïve kid going through life with pure untainted joy and succeeding. sometimes you want to see characters struggle and eventually get things right, not see them blindly charge into adversity ass first and stumble into success.
@2Elmo2 Жыл бұрын
“When you’re going through some shit” then you described literally any non episodic show. It was literally hated more when it was airing then now. They didn’t even grow up everyone was hating on it in the moment. Clarence was hated because the show was stupid and the 90% of the jokes weren’t funny or were dry. Literally no one I knew liked Clarence. It’s only after it ended that people are trying to justify it not being that bad by using the funny highlights of the show. That doesn’t change the show was still mostly ass.

Clarence is literally cartoon: the show. It was so generic and hits every beat a good cartoon should, and it's its biggest strength as well as its biggest weakness. People love the show because it's what they expected, but other people hated it because there's nothing too special about it like other great cartoons (the mystery of Gravity Falls or the expansive world of Adventure Time). I'm on the side which love the show btw.
@limepie38014 жыл бұрын

I used to watch Clarence mainly around the time I was in middle school. I'd say most of the episodes I'd seen back then were outright iconic and I still remember them fondly. For example: The episode were Clarence, Sumo and Jeff stay up all night to see a meteor shower and start tripping balls out of sleep deprivation The one with Belson challenging all his friends to stay at his house all night while pretending they're attacked by a chainsaw wielding psycho, and Sumo oddly enough being the only one smart enough not to fall for it The one where Clarence and friends are playing this amazing pirate themed board game I wish was real while this other kid is trying to fit in The one where Chad (one of my favorite characters in the entire show) trusts Clarence with keeping their house safe, he and friends start placing Home Alone styled traps and then they have to keep CHAD safe from the traps when he comes back The one where they go to the arcade with just one quarter each, with Clarence immediately wasting his and having fun his own way, Jeff painstakingly calculating WHEN to use it to win at that quarter winning game and Sumo becoming addicted to a game and disappearing for most of the episode The one about the "turtle hats" The one with Clarence using a horn as a comedic device and everyone starting to get sick of it, until they just accept it and make this amazingly weird musical number with horns The one about the nuggets sauce brainwashing all Clarence's school into a cult And finally, the one with Clarence and Chad going camping with Clarence throwing out almost everything they brought along just to bond with him closer and live a "real" adventure without any modern day comfort
@OliQuii4 жыл бұрын
In all honesty, I feel like the main reason why clarence was disliked was because it was just too "childish" for what at the time other cartoons such as regular show and steven universe had, but here's the thing PEOPLE and ik this is gonna sound very controversial of me but CARTOONS WERE MADE FOR KIDSSS!! Now that doesn't mean adults or teens cant watch it but it's like their main target for children to watch it but regualr show and steven universe just grew a more larger fanbase. I personally loved all three of these shows but clarence to me just gave that more childish cartoon, unlike regualr show and S.U, clarence gave a actual childish cartoon type of show, but I do feel like why it wasnt as successful was because of who it targeted and stayed targeted to. Children and because the creators didnt really make a huge story plot to it I feel like it just wasnt picked up from other viewers and just considered it childish.

On top of this just being a really good show, it's also INSANELY impressive that this show, which came out a decade ago, had one of the main characters have two moms, and it's treated as completely normal(there was also a scene where their teacher went on a blind date, saw a cute guy walk up, look around, see her, and then see the guy that he was actually dating, before air-kissing, and walking off(I'm pretty sure holding hands), while a song sings "love is love", but those two guys weren't really related to any main characters, in any way), nobody calls attention to it, the show doesn't pat itself on the back, or use that as any marketing(as far as I could tell), and you could have mistaken his butch mom for his dad, or the writers could have just made her his dad, and nothing about the show would have changed, in the slightest, aside from him having a dad. That is amazing to me.
